HighStar Universal Sling

The HighStar Universal Sling is a Canadian-made loop sling for general seated transfers. HighStar designed it for trunk and thigh support, with an open bottom and optional head support. Westin Healthcare sells the 2022 Homecare family (1122xx / 1123xx / 1124xx / 1125xx) in Brampton and fits it across the Greater Toronto Area.

Who this sling is for

HighStar's instruction sheet calls the Universal a general transfer sling that provides excellent trunk and thigh support. It is appropriate for most clients who have limited upper body tone. Head support is optional. For toileting, HighStar says to remove the necessary clothing before you apply the sling.

HighStar prints one height and weight guide for the family. It is a guide, not a guarantee. Confirm the size with a clinician or our staff before first use.

Safe working load follows HighStar's April 2025 chart, not the older website table that printed spacer XL/XXL at 800 lb. Mesh, woven, and quilted: Child/Junior/Small 450 lb, Medium/Large 650 lb, XL/XXL 1000 lb. Spacer: Child/Junior/Small 450 lb, Small/Medium 650 lb, Large/XL/XXL 1000 lb. The finished system is limited by the lowest rating among the lift, the bar, and the sling.

Which fabric and head support

The 2022 Homecare list splits Universal into nine article families. Default on this page is Universal Mesh Medium (112204). Spacer is the breathable bathing fabric. Woven is close-knit polyester and is not ideal for bathing. Quilted adds padded leg portions. Head support and adjustable head support are separate SKUs, not a free extra.

Attachment and compatible lifts

This is a loop sling. HighStar writes that it is compatible with any floor or ceiling lift that accepts loop-style slings. Colour-coded loops go onto the carry-bar hooks. It does not use Human Care E-clips or mushroom fasteners.

On our floor it belongs on a Handicare loop carry bar: the Handicare C450, the Handicare C625, the Handicare A450, or the two-point SlingBar on the Handicare Carina 350. Drive and Hoyer manuals restrict those lifts to their own slings, so we do not hang a HighStar sling there. Confirm size and fabric with a clinician or our staff before first use.

Care and laundering

HighStar's instruction sheet: wash inside a laundry bag, temperatures not to exceed 80 C / 176 F, no bleach, air dry or cool tumble with no heat, no dry clean, no iron. Always follow the care label sewn on the sling you receive. Inspect loops, seams, and the label before every use. Remove the sling from service if it is torn, frayed, or the label is no longer legible.

Warranty

When something on the sling needs work, you call the shop that sold it. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department.

HighStar manufacturer warranty

HighStar's current instruction sheets do not print a simple year-count warranty. They do print that a properly cared for sling should last about 2 to 3 years. Ask us for the warranty that ships with your article. We handle the claim with you.

Frequently asked questions

What model is this?

It is the HighStar Universal Sling, made in Mississauga. Article families start 1122 (mesh), 1123 (spacer), 1124 (woven), and 1125 (quilted). Head-support SKUs add 1 in the fourth digit (112214) or an A suffix on spacer (112311A).

Is this a loop sling or an E-clip sling?

Loop. Colour-coded loops on a Handicare or other loop carry bar. It does not use Human Care mushroom E-clips.

What is the safe working load?

HighStar's April 2025 chart: mesh, woven, and quilted run 450 lb (Child to Small), 650 lb (Medium and Large), and 1000 lb (XL and XXL). Spacer runs 450 / 650 / 1000 lb on a slightly different size split. The lift and the bar can be lower.

Which size should I order?

Does it fit a C450 or A450?

Yes. Those Handicare motors use loop carry-bar hooks. It also fits the Carina 350 SlingBar. It does not fit a Human Care E-clip bar. We do not hang it on Drive or Hoyer lifts.

Does head support come on every sling?

No. Head support and adjustable head support are separate HighStar articles. Tell us if the person needs head support.

How do I wash it?

Laundry bag, max 80 C / 176 F, no bleach, air dry or cool tumble, no dry clean, no iron. Follow the sewn label.

Is this the same as the Handicare Universal?

No. Handicare / Savaria uses 517xxx and 8A numbers. HighStar uses 112xxx and is made in Mississauga. See the Handicare Universal Sling if that is the bar you already own.

Does funding cover a sling in Ontario?
