ODSP medical equipment funding
ODSP does not have a general equipment plan. What it may pay, with pre-approval and when no other funding covers the cost, is your ADP client share for a mobility device, some assessment fees, and batteries and repairs for mobility devices.
Contact your local ODSP office before you buy or repair anything. We prepare the quotes and product documents your office asks for, and we tell you honestly when ADP, WSIB or another program should come first.
What ODSP may cover, and what to confirm first
ODSP support for equipment is discretionary and case by case. Nothing on this list is automatic, and every item needs your worker’s pre-approval before you spend money.
May be considered
When no other funding covers the cost, and with pre-approval from your local ODSP office first.
- Your ADP client contribution, the 25 percent share, for an eligible mobility device
- Some assessment fees related to an authorized device
- Batteries and repairs for mobility devices
- Items listed in the Mandatory Special Necessities benefit for your situation
Confirm before ordering
These are where ODSP requests most often go wrong. Ask before you assume.
- Hospital beds, lifts and other equipment: no blanket coverage exists, and ODSP does not pay for equipment another program should cover
- The Mandatory Special Necessities benefit covers only its listed supplies and devices, and excludes mobility devices
- Ramps, stairlifts and home renovations are excluded; March of Dimes HVMP may be a route when its eligibility and authorization rules fit
- Anything purchased or repaired before pre-approval
- Equipment for a need WSIB or Veterans Affairs already covers

Talk to your local ODSP office
Before you buy or repair anything, contact your local office and ask what pre-approval your situation needs. Their answer governs everything after it.
Check the other programs first
If the device is an ADP category, or a workplace injury or service-related need points to WSIB or Veterans Affairs, that program comes first.
Get the pre-approval in writing
Ask your worker to confirm in writing what ODSP will consider and any limits, before any order is placed. Verbal reassurance is not what protects you.

Does ODSP cover hospital beds or lifts?
Not as a blanket rule. ODSP has no general equipment benefit, and we will never tell you a bed or a lift is covered. Some listed supplies and devices may be considered through the Mandatory Special Necessities benefit, but that benefit excludes mobility devices, and any request needs your worker’s pre-approval. Ask your local office about your specific situation before ordering.
Will ODSP pay my share of an ADP-funded wheelchair?
It may. Where ADP approves a mobility device and you are left the client contribution, ODSP may pay that amount, along with some assessment fees, when no other funding covers it and you obtain pre-approval first. That is the most common and most reliable ODSP equipment request.
Does ODSP pay for batteries and repairs?
It may, for mobility devices, when no other funding covers the cost and pre-approval is obtained first. Bring us the repair estimate or battery quote and we will format it the way your office expects, but the pre-approval conversation with your worker comes before the work is done.
Do I need approval before I buy?
Yes. ODSP guidance is to contact your local office before purchase or repair. Buying first and asking afterwards is the single most common way people end up paying the full amount themselves, and we will not encourage it.
Does ODSP cover ramps or stairlifts?
No. The Mandatory Special Necessities benefit excludes home renovations such as ramps and stairlifts. For home access work, the March of Dimes Home and Vehicle Modification Program may be a route when its eligibility and authorization rules fit, and the federal Home Accessibility Tax Credit can offset part of the cost for eligible renovations.
Can you bill ODSP directly?
We do not promise that. Arrangements depend on your office and the pre-approval it gives, and some requests are handled as reimbursement to you. What we do reliably is prepare the quote and product documents correctly so the request is not delayed by paperwork.
