HomeGlide Outdoor
stairlift

Front steps, deck stairs, a side or basement entrance. Every exposed part carries a weatherproof coating, the motor sits under its own external cover, and a full-length chair cover comes in the box.

Fits steps from 29 inches wide, folds to 15 inches when parked, and fixes to the steps rather than your wall.

Built for weather, not adapted for it

Four layers of protection, all standard.

Plenty of stairlifts offer an outdoor package as a paid extra. On the HomeGlide Outdoor the weatherproofing is the model.

Weatherproof coating. On all exposed parts, against rain, dust and direct sunlight.
External motor cover. A durable housing over the motor and the on-off switch.
Full-length chair cover. Included automatically, over chair and motor when parked.
Single-molded seat. A smooth all-weather surface that dries quickly and wipes clean.

The full-length cover is included, not an accessory. It goes over the chair and motor when the lift is parked, keeping dust and garden debris off as well as weather.
The honest bit

It is certified from 5°F to 122°F. Ontario occasionally goes lower.

That range is about −15°C to 50°C. It covers most of a Brampton winter and every summer day we get. In a deep cold snap below −15°C, use the indoor stairs for a day or two.

We would rather say that now than have you discover it in February. If year-round certainty in any weather is the requirement, ask about a porch lift instead.

122°F
50°C, upper limit

Every one of these is included

There is no options list to work through on the Outdoor model. Access BDD fits all of it as standard, which is unusual and worth knowing when you compare quotes.

Soft-grip joystick One control, a soft-touch grip, and minimal effort to travel up or down. Nothing else to learn.
Seatbelt with sensor Retractable, with a stainless steel buckle you can work one-handed. A sensor confirms it is fastened before the lift will move.
Armrest sensors The lift will not start until both armrests are down and fully unfolded, even with the seatbelt fastened.
Two indoor remotes Wall-mounted handsets inside the house call the lift or park it at the top or bottom of the steps, so you are not walking outside to fetch it.
Manual swivel, 70° A lever at the top landing turns the chair 70° away from the top step, so you get off facing safe ground.
Slim aluminum rail Fixed to the steps rather than a wall or railing. Quick to install, and neutral enough to disappear into a garden.

Also fitted as standard

Keylock, pre-fitted, to isolate the lift to specific people
Emergency stop button
Automatic stop sensors on the drive unit and footrest
Manual folding footrest
Wipe-clean seat and surfaces throughout
Battery operation, so it runs during a power outage
Side profile of the HomeGlide Outdoor stairlift folded flat against its rail
Narrow steps

From 29 inches wide, folding to 15.

Outdoor steps are usually narrower than an indoor staircase, which is where most outdoor stairlift plans fall apart. The HomeGlide Outdoor fits steps from 29 inches across.

Seat, arms and footrest fold to 15 inches at either landing, so anyone else in the house still walks up and down normally. The rail fixes to the steps, not a wall or railing, which keeps installation quick and the disruption small.

Choose the Outdoor if

  • The steps are outside: front, deck, side or basement entrance
  • You want the weatherproofing built in rather than bolted on
  • The steps are narrow, from 29 inches across

Look elsewhere if

  • The staircase is indoors - see the HomeGlide
  • A wheelchair or scooter must travel with you - ask about a porch lift
  • You need more than 350 lb - see the Handicare 1000

Stairlift, porch lift, or ramp?

Three ways to solve a set of outdoor steps, and they suit different people. We fit all three, so this is a straight answer rather than a sales pitch.

Outdoor stairlift
You sit, it carries you up the steps. Cheapest of the three and the quickest to install, since the rail fixes to the steps themselves.
Best if you can walk a little and transfer
Porch lift
A small platform that raises you, wheelchair or scooter included, to porch level. More work to install and more money.
Best if the wheelchair travels with you
Ramp
No power, nothing to service. Needs roughly a foot of run for every inch of rise, so a tall set of steps demands a long ramp and the space for it.
Best for a low rise with room to run

What it costs, and who helps pay

Outdoor installs price differently from indoor ones. The length of the rail matters, and so does what your steps are made of, since fixing into concrete, wood or stone is not the same job. We quote after seeing them.

Stairlifts are not covered by Ontario's ADP. Any company that tells you otherwise is wrong. Here is what does apply.
