Etobicoke grew as a township of farms, mill villages on the Humber, and lakeshore towns, then a large suburban build-out after the war. Long Branch, Mimico and New Toronto were separate municipalities until 1 January 1967. The Kingsway appears in the City of Toronto Archives as later suburban construction, including a 17 June 1947 Globe photograph. That is not Cabbagetown stock. Do not paste a 12-foot downtown terrace onto this page.
The City publishes 2021 dwelling numbers for the Etobicoke York community council area, not for former Etobicoke alone. That area also includes former York wards such as York South-Weston and Humber River-Black Creek. The figures below are that CCA. They are not an Etobicoke-only percentage. Compared with Toronto and East York, this west-and-northwest area is more ground-related and more 1960s to 1980s.
Bungalows, backsplits and a three-to-five-step entry
The dominant construction period in the Etobicoke York CCA is the suburban boom of 1961 to 1980. Around Rexdale and West Humber-Clairville, next to the showroom, that usually means a bungalow, backsplit or sidesplit. The indoor stair is often straight. The front is often a short split foyer. Measure the split. We do not invent a typical rise in millimetres. A porch lift or a short modular ramp at the entry, and a straight indoor rail if the stair needs one, is the usual pair.

Apartment towers sit on the arterial roads. In the Etobicoke York CCA, 42.4 percent of dwellings are in buildings of five or more storeys. That number mixes in former York, so treat it as the west-and-northwest picture, not a former-Etobicoke census. A hospital bed or a scooter still needs corridor width, the suite door, and usually a booked elevator. That booking is a building rule set by the corporation or landlord.

Etobicoke General Hospital (William Osler Health System), 101 Humber College Boulevard, Etobicoke ON M9V 1R8. Phone 416-747-3400. Full-service hospital opened in 1972 and joined Osler in 1997. Emergency, critical care, surgery, labour and delivery, cancer care, palliative, mental health and dialysis. Closest hospital to Toronto Pearson. Etobicoke Wellness Centre (Osler), 115 Humber College Boulevard, is the outpatient and renal building next to the hospital.
Queensway Health Centre, Sherway
Trillium Health Partners, 150 Sherway Drive, Toronto ON M9C 1A5. Phone 416-259-6671. Off The West Mall, south of The Queensway, across from Sherway Gardens. Urgent Care Centre daily 3pm to 9pm. It is not a full 24-hour emergency department. It began as Queensway General Hospital, with first patients in 1956. Do not confuse it with St. Joseph's Health Centre at 30 The Queensway in Parkdale. St. Joseph's is former City of Toronto and sits on the Toronto page.
Nearby, not inside former Etobicoke
West Park Healthcare Centre (UHN), 170 Emmett Avenue, is in former York / Mount Dennis, just east of the Humber. Specialized rehab and complex care. No emergency department. Runnymede Healthcare Centre, 625 Runnymede Road, is also east of the Humber, in the former City of Toronto. Families leaving those sites still live in Etobicoke. The addresses themselves are not Etobicoke hospitals.
City homes: Kipling Acres, Lakeshore Lodge, Wesburn Manor
Kipling Acres, 2233 Kipling Avenue, is a redeveloped City home on about 10 acres in northern Etobicoke, 337 beds, with the Beaumond Heights Behavioural Support Unit, short-stay respite and an Adult Day Program. Lakeshore Lodge, 3197 Lake Shore Boulevard West, is 150 beds in New Toronto. Wesburn Manor, 400 The West Mall, is 192 beds beside the Civic Centre, with Italian, Polish and Portuguese cultural partnerships on the City table. Placement is Ontario Health atHome, 1-833-515-1234. Confirm which regional office holds the file.
Eatonville Care Centre
420 The East Mall, Etobicoke ON M9B 3Z9. 247 licensed beds. The Ministry page routes placement questions to Ontario Health atHome Mississauga Halton (1-833-515-1234 / 1-905-855-9090), even though the building is in Etobicoke. That is the official path on that page. Contact the home directly about placement.
The Village of Humber Heights
Schlegel Villages, 2245 Lawrence Avenue West, Etobicoke ON M9P 3W3. Phone 416-235-0201. Retirement apartments, full-service retirement, assisted care, memory care and long-term care on one campus, open since 2005. Named because families already know the campus; contact the campus directly for its own services.
A bed after Etobicoke General is a rental more often than a purchase. The Hardship Fund can fund a hospital bed for a low-income City of Toronto resident who is not on OW or ODSP, with an OT assessment. ADP will not. If the person is already on OW or ODSP, the caseworker uses the same TESS medical-items list. People living in long-term care are outside Hardship Fund.

The administering body is Toronto Employment and Social Services, City of Toronto. There is no Etobicoke hardship office at the Civic Centre or anywhere else. Do not send a Brampton or Mississauga resident to 416-338-8888. Do not send an Etobicoke resident to Peel ODSP discretionary benefits.
Hardship Fund on an Etobicoke address
Low-income City of Toronto residents who are not receiving Ontario Works, Emergency Assistance or ODSP can apply for help with medically based items. A Rexdale or Mimico address is a Toronto address for this program. Call 416-338-8888 and choose option 3. There is no public form. Apply before you pay. The City may refuse reimbursement after the fact.
On the TESS medical-items list that Hardship Fund uses: hospital beds and therapeutic mattresses (OT assessment), floor lifts and slings, threshold ramps, toilet and bath aids, and the 25 percent ADP leaves on approved wheelchairs and scooters. TESS does not pay for porch lifts, stairlifts, ceiling track lifts or home modifications. Those go to March of Dimes HVMP.
Already on OW or ODSP in this city
The same TESS medical-items list still applies. The door is the caseworker, not 416-338-8888 option 3. ADP often pays 100 percent of an approved wheelchair or scooter for someone on social assistance, so the City 25 percent top-up is not the path.
ADP itself is provincial. A west-end postal code does not create an Etobicoke ADP. It funds eligible manual and power wheelchairs, approved scooters, wheelchair seating and wheeled walkers at up to 75 percent for people who are not on social assistance. It does not fund bathroom equipment, beds, stairlifts, ramps or lifts. That list does not change at the Humber.

Peel ODSP discretionary benefits are for Peel. Halton Low-Income Financial Assistance is for Burlington, Oakville and Milton. An Etobicoke postal code does not open those doors, even when the shop sits next to Highway 27.
