Savaria K2
straight stairlift
Folded, the K2 takes 10¾ inches from your wall - slimmer than either Handicare we carry. On a narrow staircase that is usually the whole argument.
Its 36-month parts warranty also runs a year longer than the Handicare 1000 and 1100 carry. Installed in a few hours across Brampton, Mississauga, Toronto and the GTA.
How much of the staircase you get back.
The objection we hear most is not about the rider. It is from everyone else in the house: will there still be room to walk up the stairs? Here is that answer as a measurement, folded depth from the wall, across the four models we have published figures for.
Manufacturer fold-up depths, with the seat, arms and footrest folded. Savaria measures from the wall; Access BDD's drawing gives 13½ in to the folded chair and 15 in to the outermost point, so the HomeGlide bar shows the larger figure. The HomeGlide Outdoor shares the same chassis. We measure your staircase on site either way.
L seat or V seat
Two seats, and the choice changes three things: how much room you have, where the control sits, and how slim the lift folds. Both are wipe-clean vinyl in beige, on a cream white powder-coated lift.
L seat
StandardThe traditional shape, in beige wipe-clean vinyl. Its toggle sits at the end of the armrest, and it folds the slimmest of the two.
V seat
OptionA more open back, which some people find more comfortable when more room is wanted on the seat. Its toggle is larger and sits on top of the armrest.
Read this before you assume 350 lb
The K2 is rated at 350 lb, but two specific choices bring that down to 300 lb. Neither is unusual, so it is worth knowing before you commit.
Older homes in the GTA often have stairs at this angle. We measure the incline at the assessment, so you will know before ordering.
If a door sits near the bottom of the stairs and you add the flip-up rail, the rating drops to 300 lb.
The K2 Plus or the Handicare 1000 carry higher ratings.
What comes as standard
Seven things, none of them upgrades. Two are worth pointing out: the master shut-off and the diagnostic lights are the kind of detail that shows up years later.
Options, and what each one solves
A power seat swivel and power footrest can be ordered too. If you want the full set of power features, that is the Handicare 1100 rather than the K2.
Manual flip-up rail
For a door close to the bottom of the rail. Removes the tripping hazard. Note it caps capacity at 300 lb.
Rail extension brackets
For a door near the top landing. Reduces how far the rail intrudes past the staircase.
Continuous charge system
Charges along the entire rail rather than only at the top and bottom landings, so the chair can be parked anywhere.
Swivel handle paddle
A paddle added to the seat swivel handle, making it easier to turn with a weak grip.
Emergency stop button
An emergency stop added to the armrest, within reach of the rider.
Safety, as built
Fitted on every K2, not optional.
- Obstacle sensors on the footrest and carriage stop the lift if something is in the way
- The seat swivels and locks, so you step off onto level floor
- Non-skid footrest surface and a retractable seatbelt
- An overspeed brake prevents the chair travelling too fast down the rail
Choose the K2 if
- Budget is the deciding factor
- The staircase is narrow and everyone else still uses it
- A 36-month parts warranty matters, a year longer than either Handicare
- A covered porch needs a lift too

What a Savaria K2 costs, and who helps pay
Savaria positions the K2 as its most affordable stairlift, and it is our value pick of the four Savaria and Handicare models we install. Staircase length is the main variable; the outdoor package is the biggest single add.
Stairlifts are not covered by Ontario's ADP. Any company that tells you otherwise is wrong, and we would rather you heard it from us. Here is what does apply.

How narrow a staircase does the Savaria K2 fit?
Folded, the K2 takes 10¾ inches (27.3 cm) from the wall with the standard L seat, or 11¼ inches (28.6 cm) with the V seat. That is the slimmest fold of the models with a published figure - slimmer than either Handicare, and slimmer than the Access HomeGlide at 13½ to 15 inches - which is why the K2 is our usual answer on a narrow staircase the whole household still uses.
What is the weight capacity of the Savaria K2?
350 lb (159 kg). Three things bring it down to 300 lb: a staircase steeper than 45°, the manual flip-up rail, or rail extension brackets at the top landing. If any of those apply and the rider is near that limit, the K2 Plus or Handicare 1000 are the better choices.
How much does a Savaria K2 stairlift cost in Ontario?
Savaria positions the K2 as its most affordable stairlift, and it is our value pick of the four Savaria and Handicare models we carry. Staircase length is the main variable, and the outdoor package is the biggest single add. You get a written figure at the free in-home assessment with no obligation - call 905 451-7743.
What is the difference between the L seat and the V seat?
The L seat is the traditional shape, armrests 17.24 to 20.39 inches, toggle at the end of the armrest, and it folds a half inch slimmer. The V seat has a more open back that some people find more comfortable, armrests 16.85 to 19.2 inches, with a larger toggle on top of the armrest. We have you sit in both.
What warranty comes with the K2?
Savaria includes a 36-month warranty against defective parts through your dealer, subject to regular maintenance - a year longer than the Handicare 1000 and 1100 carry. We are the dealer who services it, from Brampton. The terms that apply to you are confirmed in writing with your quote.
Can the Savaria K2 be installed outdoors?
Yes, with the outdoor package, which Savaria rates for moderate climates. It includes a stainless steel rack and support legs, zinc-coated hardware, a UV-rated water-repellent seat with closed cell foam, two radio-frequency remotes, a chair cover and an upgraded battery. We assess your exposure and usually recommend it for covered porches and sheltered entrances.
How steep a staircase can it handle?
30° to 55° with up to 32 ft of travel. Remember that above 45° the rating drops from 350 lb to 300 lb.
Can it be installed on either side of the stairs?
Yes. The rail goes on whichever side suits the room, and it fastens to the stair treads rather than your wall. Installation takes only a few hours.
Does the K2 work during a power failure?
Yes. It runs on a 24 VDC battery with charging built in at the top and bottom of the stairs, giving several trips during an outage. The optional continuous charge system charges along the whole rail instead, so the chair can be parked anywhere.
Is the Savaria K2 covered by ADP?
No. Stairlifts are not covered by Ontario's Assistive Devices Program, whatever you may read elsewhere. March of Dimes, Veterans Affairs, WSIB, ODSP, IFHP and the Ontario Seniors' Home Safety Tax Credit are the routes that do apply, and we complete the paperwork with you as an authorized vendor.
