The default Scarborough house is a 1961-1980 bungalow or split, not a Victorian terrace.
City Planning's 2021 census profile for the Scarborough Community Council Area covers Scarborough wards only. It is not mixed with former York the way the Etobicoke York profile is. Of 218,930 occupied private dwellings, 81,510 (37.2 percent) are single-detached and 76,975 (35.2 percent) sit in buildings of five or more storeys. Toronto and East York are 11.2 percent detached and 53.4 percent high-rise. City-wide the detached share is 23.3 percent. Scarborough is the most ground-related of the three Toronto slugs on this site.
The largest construction slice is 1961 to 1980: 80,740 dwellings, 36.9 percent. Only 22.1 percent were built in 1960 or before, and that older stock is more farmhouse, wartime house and early suburb than a downtown bay-and-gable. Tenure is 64.0 percent owned. Owned non-condo is still 45.9 percent of all dwellings. The City Archives describe an agricultural township, then the 1950s Golden Mile of industry on Eglinton Avenue East and new suburban communities.
Bungalow, backsplit, sidesplit, three-to-six front steps
The 1961-1980 boom is the default house in Bendale, Woburn and much of Agincourt. The indoor stair is often straight. The front is often a short porch or a split foyer. A porch lift or a short modular ramp at the entry, and a straight indoor rail if the stair needs one, is the usual pair. If the split turns, we measure. We do not invent a rise in millimetres, and we do not paste a Cabbagetown winding stair onto this stock.

37.2 percent detached plus 9.6 percent row houses means more jobs where a modular ramp can sit on a driveway. That is still not a rural well-and-lane property except at the Rouge edge. 35.2 percent of dwellings are in buildings of five or more storeys. A hospital bed or a scooter still needs corridor width, the suite door, and usually a booked elevator. That booking is a building rule set by the corporation or landlord. Lobby parking for a scooter is the corporation's rule, not an ADP question.

An extra stair to a basement or an upper flat is the same access problem as a second suite anywhere in the city, and it is already on the ground here. A compact chair that lives in the flat is often the honest product when the shared stair is not the resident's to convert.

Birchmount Hospital sits at 3030 Birchmount Road in L'Amoreaux. Towers and post-war houses share the arterial roads toward Agincourt, Malvern and the Line 2 / former SRT corridor. This end of the former city sits closer to the downtown core than Rouge is.

Centenary, Guildwood, West Hill, Rouge
Centenary Hospital sits at 2867 Ellesmere Road in Morningside / Guildwood. West Hill and Rouge sit farther still, against Pickering. Rouge is still the City of Toronto. It is not Durham. Tell us which end of Scarborough the home is on. We do not collapse Bendale and Rouge into one arrival claim.

The catalogue is the same one we carry across the GTA. The mix that actually gets used on this slug is not. A discharge from 3050 Lawrence Avenue East asks for a bed. A Woburn split asks for a straight rail. A driveway that will take a short ramp is more common here than on a 12-foot downtown lot. An Agincourt or Malvern suite asks for a folding chair or a scooter that will store indoors.

A scooter in an Agincourt, Malvern or Kennedy building has to clear the unit door and sit in the suite or in whatever locker the corporation allows. Approved scooters can go through ADP. Storage cannot. The same door-width problem applies to a folding power chair.

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program is provincial. A Scarborough postal code does not create a Scarborough ADP. It still covers only eligible manual and power wheelchairs, approved scooters, wheelchair seating and wheeled walkers, at up to 75 percent of the approved amount. It does not cover bathroom equipment, beds, stairlifts, ramps or lifts.

SHN Centenary Hospital, Guildwood
2867 Ellesmere Road, Scarborough ON M1E 4B9. Phone 416-284-8131. Morningside / Guildwood, on the far-east side of the former city. A discharge from Centenary to West Hill or Rouge is a longer cross-city run than a discharge from General to Bendale.
Providence Healthcare, Clairlea-Birchmount
Unity Health Toronto, 3276 St. Clair Avenue East, Scarborough ON M1L 1W1. Phone 416-285-3666. Rehab and complex continuing care, not an SHN hospital. The Ministry also licenses 288 long-term care beds on the same campus. Placement for those beds is Ontario Health atHome Toronto Central, not a single Scarborough office.
City homes: Bendale Acres and Seven Oaks
Bendale Acres, 2920 Lawrence Avenue East, 302 beds, with Pavillon Omer Deslauriers (37 French-language beds), an Adult Day Program and the Highland Creek Retreat Behavioural Support Unit. Seven Oaks, 9 Neilson Road, 249 beds, with a Tamil cultural partnership listed on the City table. People living in long-term care are outside Hardship Fund.
Yee Hong McNicoll and Yee Hong Finch
Yee Hong Centre - Scarborough McNicoll, 2311 McNicoll Avenue, 155 licensed beds, 416-321-6333. Yee Hong Centre - Scarborough Finch, 60 Scottfield Drive, 250 licensed beds, 416-321-3000. Both are not-for-profit. SHN also runs hemodialysis on the ground floor at 60 Scottfield Drive. That satellite is not a hospital. Ministry pages route Yee Hong placement to Ontario Health atHome Central East (1-833-515-1234 / 1-800-263-3877).
A bed after SHN General, Birchmount, Centenary or Providence is a rental more often than a purchase. The Hardship Fund can fund a hospital bed for a low-income City of Toronto resident who is not on OW or ODSP, with an OT assessment. ADP will not. If the person is already on OW or ODSP, the caseworker uses the same TESS medical-items list. People living in long-term care are outside Hardship Fund.

Amalgamation put Scarborough on the Toronto fund. It did not open a Scarborough hardship office.
The administering body is Toronto Employment and Social Services, City of Toronto. Scarborough Community Council still meets at 150 Borough Drive. That civic centre is not a hardship counter. Do not send a Pickering or Ajax resident to 416-338-8888. Do not send a Scarborough resident to Durham Ontario Works.
Hardship Fund on a Scarborough address
Low-income City of Toronto residents who are not receiving Ontario Works, Emergency Assistance or ODSP can apply for help with medically based items. A Bendale, Agincourt, Guildwood or Rouge address is a Toronto address for this program. Call 416-338-8888 and choose option 3. There is no public form. Apply before you pay. The City may refuse reimbursement after the fact.
On the TESS medical-items list that Hardship Fund uses: hospital beds and therapeutic mattresses (OT assessment), floor lifts and slings, threshold ramps, toilet and bath aids, and the 25 percent ADP leaves on approved wheelchairs and scooters. TESS does not pay for porch lifts, stairlifts, ceiling track lifts or home modifications. Those go to March of Dimes HVMP.
Rouge is still Toronto. Pickering is Durham.
The former City of Scarborough is not Durham, even where Rouge sits against Pickering. A Scarborough address does not go to the Ajax Ontario Works office at 140 Commercial Avenue. A Pickering address does not open the Hardship Fund. Confirm the municipality on the property, not the nearest mall.
If the person is already on OW or ODSP in Toronto, the door is the TESS caseworker and the same medical-items list, not 416-338-8888 option 3. ADP itself is provincial. It is not a Scarborough program. It funds eligible manual and power wheelchairs, approved scooters, wheelchair seating and wheeled walkers.
