Caregiver-pushed chair with four small wheels

Transport wheelchair rental in Toronto and the GTA

A transport wheelchair is pushed by someone else. It has four small wheels, folds for a car boot, and rents from $60 for one week.

Delivery, installation and pickup is $120, or the customer can collect from our Brampton showroom. ADP does not fund transport chairs or any wheelchair rental.

Deposit

Amount confirmed before booking

We confirm the deposit amount before you commit. It is refunded after return and inspection, normally within about three business days.

Need only a day or a weekend? Our published minimum is one week. Check venue loaners first when the chair is needed only inside one attraction.

Who has to push a transport wheelchair?

A caregiver, family member or attendant must push the chair. The person sitting in it cannot self-propel with the small rear wheels.

Good fit

Hospital taxi to condo

It is the practical short-distance chair when someone can sit upright and another person will push from the hospital curb, through the taxi ride and into the suite.

Good fit

Appointments and visitor weeks

It folds for car travel and works on smooth paved routes for appointments, a hotel stay or a week of outings.

Wrong fit

Nobody is available to push

If the user will be alone, do not rent a transport chair. Choose a folding manual chair for self-propelling or ask for a clinical mobility assessment.

If this is the wrong chair, compare our folding manual wheelchair rental and manual tilt-in-space wheelchair rental before booking.

How do you measure the seat and check the car boot?

Sit on a firm surface, measure the widest point of the hips, then add one to two inches. That is the seat width, not the chair's overall width.

Seat

Bring the hip measurement

Tell us the measurement when you book. We will confirm the current fleet chair instead of promising a width or capacity that is not published for it.

Boot

Measure the narrowest opening

The chair folds, but its current weight and folded dimensions are not published. Call with the boot opening so we can confirm the actual chair.

Weather

Small wheels and slush do not mix

Use a transport chair on smooth paved surfaces. For an unplowed walk, the larger rear wheels on a folding manual chair are the more honest choice.

Can you use it at the Zoo, Ripley's, Pearson or on a cruise?

Yes for a weekly outing when the venue or carrier accepts it, but check free venue help and airline rules before paying for a private rental.

Toronto Zoo

Check the venue loaner first

The Zoo publishes 10 km of walking trails and a limited complimentary wheelchair program with seasonal online reservations. Rent privately when the chair is also needed at the hotel or another stop.

Ripley's

Ask Guest Services before travel

Recent visitors report borrowing a manual chair at the aquarium. Confirm the current policy directly, especially if a caregiver will be needed on ramps and inclines.

Pearson and cruises

Airport assistance is a different service

Pearson says airline wheelchair assistance should be arranged at least 48 hours before travel. It is not a chair you keep downtown. Ask the airline or cruise line before taking a rental chair.

Official travel details: Pearson mobility and wheelchair services and Toronto Zoo visitor planning.

How fast can you deliver, and where can you see the chair?

When the chair is in stock, we can often deliver the same day or the next day. Urgent hospital discharges should call 905 451-7743 rather than rely on the online calendar.

Brampton

Collect or see a chair at Westin

Our showroom is Unit 7, 15 Fisherman Drive, Brampton ON L7A 1B7. Call first so we can confirm the chair is ready.

Etobicoke

See our partner, not another Westin location

Mobility Specialties is our partner at Unit 16, 106 Humber College Blvd, on the same street as Etobicoke General Hospital. Call ahead to confirm what can be viewed.

Leaving hospital

Ask Ontario Health atHome first

Ask the social worker or discharge planner about public equipment, or call Ontario Health atHome at 310-2222. Rent privately when that route does not meet the timing or chair need.

What usually goes with a transport wheelchair?

A short travel chair often sits beside other equipment used for walking, toileting or recovery at home.

Does ADP pay for a transport chair or its rental?

No. ADP does not fund transport chairs, and it does not fund wheelchair rentals. OHIP does not pay a retail shop for this rental.

ADP

Transport chairs are excluded

ADP can help with an approved purchased manual or power wheelchair and seating, but a transport chair is on Ontario's not-covered list.

Ontario Health atHome

Call before a hospital discharge

Ontario Health atHome may arrange equipment through contracted suppliers after an assessment. Its typical rental is 30 days and some fees may apply. Call 310-2222.

Other payers

Get approval before renting

WSIB, Veterans Affairs and private insurers may help when their rules and approvals apply. Confirm whether they cover rental or only purchase before you commit.

Read the exact exclusions on our Assistive Devices Program page, then check the funding overview for other programs.

Questions about transport wheelchair rentals

Who has to push a transport wheelchair?

A caregiver, family member or attendant must push it. The person sitting in a transport chair cannot self-propel with its small rear wheels.

Can I rent it for one day or a weekend?

Our minimum rental term is one week. For one attraction, check the venue loaner first. Rent privately when the chair is also needed at the hotel, on another day or at a second site.

Does ADP fund a transport chair?

No. Ontario lists transport chairs as not covered by ADP, and ADP does not fund wheelchair rentals.

Can I take it to Pearson or on a cruise?

Ask the airline or cruise line before travel. Pearson says airline wheelchair assistance should be arranged at least 48 hours ahead, and that airport service is not a chair you keep after leaving the terminal.

How do I measure seat width?

Sit on a firm surface, measure the widest point of the hips, and add one to two inches. Give us that measurement so we can confirm the actual chair available.

How fast can Westin deliver?

When the chair is in stock, we can often deliver the same day or the next day. Call 905 451-7743 for an urgent discharge rather than relying on the online calendar.

Will someone always be there to push?

If the answer is yes, tell us the hip measurement, car boot opening, narrowest doorway and date needed. If the answer is no, call before booking so we can move you to the right chair.
