A third of occupied Hamilton dwellings were built in 1960 or before.
A Housing Needs Assessment prepared for the City of Hamilton, hosted on hamilton.ca, reports 2021 Census figures: 32.8 percent of occupied private dwellings were built in 1960 or before, against 22.7 percent for Ontario. 60.9 percent were built in 1980 or before, a higher share than the province. Only 4.9 percent were built in 2016-2021.
The same report counts 125,130 single-detached dwellings. Statistics Canada neighbouring-CSD tables put Hamilton's single-detached share at 56.2 percent. The consultant text in the City-hosted report states that single-detached dwellings are generally less accessible due to the presence of stairs. That is their wording, not a Westin claim. Halton's 2021 Census infographic, used only as a contrast, recorded 9,570 occupied Hamilton dwellings requiring major repairs, more than Halton.
Older houses, a raised porch, a stair that often turns
Wards 1, 3, 4 and 5 are described on City ward pages as urban wards below the Niagara Escarpment. A third of the city's occupied stock predates 1961. From that age and from the single-detached majority we infer interior stairs, some turning stairs, and raised or split entries. We do not claim every lower-city house has a winding stair. We measure.

City ward pages and Hamilton Health Sciences directions treat the Mountain and the lower city as different geographies. HHS directions to Hamilton General include a separate From the Mountain route via the Clairmount Access. Getting a bed or a stairlift from Barton Street to Upper Sherman is not a flat suburban run. Porch lifts, outdoor rails and ramps at older porches come up more often here than in a 2010s Halton survey.

The catalogue is the same one we carry across the GTA. The mix that actually gets used here is not. Older lower-city houses ask for curved stairlifts and porch lifts. Mountain homes ask about outdoor rails and the run from street to door. Discharges from Hamilton General, the Regional Rehabilitation Centre, St. Peter's and Juravinski ask for beds, floor lifts and a wheelchair that will fit the house they are going back to.

Regional Rehabilitation Centre, 300 Wellington Street North, next door to Hamilton General. Specialized rehab: acquired brain injury, amputations, spinal cord injury, stroke, hand and work-related injuries. Inpatient and outpatient. Therapeutic pool and outdoor track.
St. Peter's Hospital, 88 Maplewood Avenue. Complex continuing care since 1890: palliative, restorative rehabilitation, complex medical, behavioural. GERAS Centre for Aging Research. Phone 905-777-3837.
Hamilton Mountain
Juravinski and Upper Sherman
Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre sits on the Hamilton escarpment. Regional cancer program plus general medical and surgical hospital, emergency, orthopedics, arthroplasty and rehabilitation.
Macassa Lodge, 701 Upper Sherman Avenue, is the City-owned long-term care home on the Mountain: 270 beds, 905-546-2800. Ontario Health atHome, Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant, handles placement. We do not invent wait times.
St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton
A second hospital system, not HHS. Charlton Campus, 50 Charlton Avenue East, L8N 4A6, switchboard 905-522-1155. West 5th Campus, 100 West 5th Street: regional specialized mental health services at the Margaret and Charles Juravinski Centre for Integrated Healthcare, plus medical outpatient clinics.
Dundas, City of Hamilton
Wentworth Lodge, 41 South Street West, Dundas: City-owned not-for-profit long-term care, 160 beds. St. Joseph's Villa, 56 Governor's Road, Dundas: 378-bed long-term care home plus residential living on the campus. Dundas is inside the amalgamated city. This list is not a complete inventory of Hamilton long-term care.

The administering body is the City of Hamilton. It is a single-tier municipality and its own Consolidated Municipal Service Manager. Do not send a Hamilton family to Halton 311, Halton LIFA, or the Toronto Hardship Fund.
The Special Supports Program has a low-income route
The City of Hamilton Special Supports Program serves City of Hamilton residents, including a low-income route for residents 18 or older who receive neither Ontario Works nor ODSP, when total family income is under the Statistics Canada Low-Income Measurement for their family size. The low-income route covers bath and toilet aids, bed rails, mattress overlays, canes, crutches, standard walkers, wheelchair and wheeled-walker rentals, and mobility aid repairs. It needs a prescription or note from a doctor or medical professional, ID for every household member, last year's CRA Notice of Assessment or Proof of Income Statement for every adult, and a letter of assessment from a healthcare professional. It does not fund equipment already ordered or purchased. Beyond the city program, the path is the shared provincial and federal list: ADP for eligible manual and power wheelchairs, approved scooters, wheelchair seating and wheeled walkers; March of Dimes Home and Vehicle Modification Program; WSIB, Veterans Affairs, IFHP and NIHB when those programs apply; Easter Seals, Muscular Dystrophy Canada and The War Amps when you are a registered client; tax credits; private insurance.
