Description

The BIOS Living Orthopedic Cane is BIOS Medical's angled soft-grip cane. Westin Healthcare sells it and delivers it for homes in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. BIOS prints a 31 to 39 inch (79 to 99 cm) height, 1 inch (2.5 cm) steps, a 265 lb (120 kg) rating, and one-button height adjustment.

This is the BIOS orthopedic cane. It is not the offset cane, the derby, or the J-handle. The rating is 265 lb (120 kg), not 300 lb. The handle is an angled soft grip, not a crook and not a derby.

Who this cane is for

BIOS writes that the angled soft grip will reduce stress on the user's wrist and hands, and that the one-button post is for anyone who has difficulty walking. Families here usually call when they want that angled grip in a Brampton or GTA home.

BIOS does not tell a reader to pick an orthopedic handle over a derby or an offset. A clinician decides which handle fits. Westin does not give medical advice.

  • An angled soft-grip handle BIOS rates at 265 lb (120 kg)
  • A 31 to 39 inch (79 to 99 cm) one-button post
  • Two colours: Black 56018 and Copper 56017

Fit and height

BIOS prints a handle height of 31 to 39 inches (79 to 99 cm) in 1 inch (2.5 cm) steps. That is a wider band than the 33 to 37 inch J-handle and derby. BIOS says to let the hands hang at the sides, then pick the push-button hole that puts the handle at wrist level. A bend in the elbow is fine. BIOS also writes that a health care professional should size a mobility cane, and that a second person may help.

Come into a Brampton or Toronto store with the shoes the person will wear and we will set the post.

Handle, tip, and base

The handle is an angled ergonomic soft grip. BIOS says that shape will reduce stress on the wrist and hands. BIOS does not print a wrist strap on this card.

The foot is a single rubber tip. This cane does not fold. BIOS sells replacement tips in 5/8, 3/4, 7/8, and 1 inch, plus a 56032 ice-pick tip. BIOS does not print which size fits this shaft. Bring the old tip or the cane if you need a match.

Weight and portability

BIOS does not print a unit weight on the orthopedic card. The carton is a walking-stick box, not freight. We still bring it in and set the height if you want setup in Brampton or the GTA.

BIOS Living Orthopedic Cane specifications

These figures are for the BIOS Living Orthopedic Cane as printed on the current BIOS card. The specification tab holds the stored values.

Use Choose Color to pick Black or Copper. BIOS maps those to 56018 and 56017.

Cane handle types

An orthopedic handle is an angled soft grip. An offset handle sets the shaft under the hand. A derby is a wide rounded grip. A J-handle is a crook that hangs on a forearm. BIOS sells each of those as its own SKU set. This orthopedic cane is also the only one in the six with a 265 lb rating.

If you want the 300 lb offset, look at the BIOS Living Offset Cane. If you want the wide derby, look at the BIOS Living Derby Cane. If you want the foam J crook, look at the BIOS Living J-Handle Cane.

Funding help for a cane or crutches in Ontario

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) does not fund standard canes or crutches, so plan around other routes. Funding that may help instead: March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), extended health plans, and community programs. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through before you buy.

Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA

We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a cane first. For a scheduled in-home setup, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works. Same-day delivery is offered through our hospital bed rental service; purchased walking aids are delivered and set up on a scheduled date.

This is a compact carton. The Canada-wide free ground-shipping offer on smaller goods can apply when it ships on its own. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery (bring-in, unwrap, test, take packaging away) is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.
