Description
The BIOS Living Offset Cane is BIOS Medical's offset-handle aluminum cane. Westin Healthcare sells it and delivers it for homes in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. BIOS prints a 31 to 39 inch (79 to 99 cm) height, 1 inch (2.5 cm) steps, a 300 lb (136 kg) rating, a wrist strap, and a non-slip rubber foot.
This is the BIOS Living Offset Cane. It is not the derby, the J-handle, or the orthopedic cane. The shaft sits under the hand so the load sits over the shaft. BIOS lists six colours under their own model codes.
Who this cane is for
BIOS writes that the offset handle is ergonomic, comfortable to use, and reduces stress on hands and wrist, and that a standard cane is for general support. Families here usually call when they want that offset grip in a Brampton or GTA home.
BIOS does not tell a reader to pick an offset over a derby or a J-handle. A clinician decides which handle fits. Westin does not give medical advice.
- An offset handle BIOS rates at 300 lb (136 kg)
- A 31 to 39 inch (79 to 99 cm) push-button post
- Six colours: Black 56015, Blue BD780, Coffee BD778, Purple BD779, Red BD781, Grey BD782
Fit and height
BIOS prints a handle height of 31 to 39 inches (79 to 99 cm) in 1 inch (2.5 cm) steps. That is a wider band than the 33 to 37 inch J-handle and derby. BIOS says to let the hands hang at the sides, then pick the push-button hole that puts the handle at wrist level. A bend in the elbow is fine. BIOS also writes that a health care professional should size a mobility cane, and that a second person may help.
Come into a Brampton or Toronto store with the shoes the person will wear and we will set the post.
Handle, tip, and base
The handle is an offset grip. BIOS says that shape is ergonomic, comfortable to use, and reduces stress on hands and wrist. A wrist strap is included. This is not a derby and it is not a J crook.
The foot is a single non-slip rubber tip. This cane does not fold. BIOS sells replacement tips in 5/8, 3/4, 7/8, and 1 inch, plus a 56032 ice-pick tip. BIOS does not print which size fits this shaft. Bring the old tip or the cane if you need a match.
Weight and portability
BIOS does not print a unit weight on the offset card. The carton is a walking-stick box, not freight. We still bring it in and set the height if you want setup in Brampton or the GTA.

Cane handle types
An offset handle sets the shaft under the hand. A derby is a wide rounded grip. A J-handle is a crook that hangs on a forearm. An orthopedic handle is an angled soft grip. BIOS sells each of those as its own SKU set. They are not colourways of one cane.
If you want the foam J crook, look at the BIOS Living J-Handle Cane. If you want the wide derby, look at the BIOS Living Derby Cane. If you want the angled soft grip at 265 lb, look at the BIOS Living Orthopedic Cane.
Funding help for a cane or crutches in Ontario
Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) does not fund standard canes or crutches, so plan around other routes. Funding that may help instead: March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), extended health plans, and community programs. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation.
