Description
The Span America Out of Bed Alarm Cable Kit, LINAK Normally Closed, Field Installed (manufacturer code Q6781) is Savaria's cable kit for connecting an out of bed alarm to a Span bed built on the LINAK control system. Savaria supplies the kit in four versions: two contact types, normally open and normally closed, each available field installed or factory installed. Westin Healthcare specifies, supplies and services Span beds in Brampton and across the Greater Toronto Area.
This is the field code. It is the retrofit, fitted by a technician to a bed that is already in a room, so the decision does not have to be made when the bed is bought. If the bed has not been built yet, put the factory version on the bed order instead, Q6782.
The four codes, and how to pick one
Two decisions, four codes. Get both right and the alarm works the first time it is needed. Get either one wrong and the kit either never calls or calls constantly.
| Contact type | Field install | Factory install |
|---|---|---|
| Normally open | Q6779 | Q6780 |
| Normally closed | Q6781 (this page) | Q6782 |
This page is Q6781: normally closed contact, field install.
Normally open or normally closed
Both versions do the same job. The difference is the state the contact rests in.
- Normally open sits open while nothing is happening and closes when the alarm triggers. Q6779 field, Q6780 factory.
- Normally closed sits closed while nothing is happening and opens when the alarm triggers. Q6781 field, Q6782 factory.
Nurse call systems and stand-alone alarm monitors are built to expect one or the other, and the two are not interchangeable. Fit a normally open cable to a system expecting normally closed and the call sits on permanently until someone unplugs it. Fit a normally closed cable to a system expecting normally open and the call never arrives, which is the worse of the two failures because nothing looks wrong.
As a general wiring convention, normally closed is often chosen for life-safety circuits, because a cut, loose or unplugged cable produces the same open circuit as a real alarm and so a fault gets noticed. Normally open is the more common convention on portable and stand-alone alarm monitors. Your nurse call vendor is the authority for a facility, and the label or manual on the alarm monitor is the authority for a single bed. If you are not sure, call (905) 451-7743 with the make and model of the nurse call system and of the alarm and we will work it out with you before anything is ordered.
If you have already bought the wrong contact type, the opposite version of this kit is Q6779.
Which beds this fits
Savaria specifies this kit by control system, not by bed model, and that is the check to make before ordering. In the 2026 Savaria range, the LINAK control system is the one named on the Advantage ReadyWide Plus options: the Plus battery backup is printed as "Plus Model, MC7(LINAK)" and the Plus under-bed lighting is printed as "MC7WP(LINAK)". The Encore MC9 and the Standard ReadyWide MC7 builds are keyed to TiMOTION instead, and take TiMOTION parts.
- This kit: Span beds built on the LINAK control system. On our shelf that is the Span Advantage ReadyWide Plus, order code MC7WPML.
- Not this kit: Span beds built on TiMOTION controls, which in the 2026 range are the Encore MC9 and the Standard Advantage ReadyWide MC7 builds.
We will not claim the Plus is the only LINAK bed Savaria has ever built, because Savaria does not publish that list. What we will do is check. Call (905) 451-7743 with the model and serial number from the bed label and we will confirm the control system with Savaria before the order goes out. Control system parts are the one place in the Span range where a near miss is a total miss.
What is in the kit, and what is not
The kit is the cable. It is not the alarm.
A working out of bed alarm is three things: a sensor that notices the person has left the bed, a monitor that decides that is worth reporting, and a path from that monitor to whoever needs to hear about it. This kit is the third part, on a Span bed with LINAK controls. If you do not already have the sensor and the monitor, tell us what the care plan asks for and we will quote the whole set rather than a cable on its own. A cable with nothing on either end of it helps nobody.
Savaria does not publish a cable length, a connector type, a contact rating or an installation instruction for any of the four codes, and we will not invent them. If your electrical or nurse call contractor needs those figures before they sign off, call (905) 451-7743 and we will get them from Savaria in writing.

The rest of the Span range sits under long term care beds, alongside the Span Encore package, the Span Advantage Q-Series and the Span transport dolly.
Service, repairs, and warranty
When something on the bed or an accessory needs work, you call the shop that supplied it, not a US parts desk. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department and our technicians come to the home or the workplace.
Span America manufacturer warranty
Span Medical Products Canada warrants beds and bed accessories against defects in workmanship and materials under normal and proper use from the date of initial delivery. Batteries, hand pendants, foot end controllers and cables carry one year, bed accessories carry one year, and parts subject to wear carry one year. Electrical components, which Span defines as the control box and the actuators, carry five years. The frame and all welds on steel structural components carry fifteen years. Labour for service is not covered by the manufacturer warranty. We handle the claim with you.
Frequently asked questions
What is the manufacturer code?
Q6781. The 2026 Savaria pricelist prints it as "Out of Bed Alarm Cable Kit - Linak Normally Closed, Field Install". Quote the code, the contact type and the install mode together and the order desk cannot pick the wrong one of the four.
Do I need normally open or normally closed?
Whichever your nurse call system or alarm monitor expects. Normally open rests open and closes on alarm; normally closed rests closed and opens on alarm. Check the nurse call documentation or the label on the monitor. If you cannot find it, call (905) 451-7743 with the make and model of both and we will confirm before ordering. This page is the normally closed version.
What happens if I order the wrong contact type?
One of two things. The call sits on permanently, which staff will notice within a shift, or the call never arrives at all, which nobody notices until the alarm is needed. The second is the reason we ask you to confirm the contact type before the order rather than after. The opposite version of this kit is Q6779.
Should I order factory or field?
Factory if the bed has not been built yet, because it arrives fitted and tested with the bed. Field if the bed is already in a room, because a technician fits it there. Savaria offers this cable both ways at each contact type, so the install decision and the contact decision are independent.
Which Span beds is this for?
Span beds built on the LINAK control system. In the 2026 Savaria range that is the Advantage ReadyWide Plus (MC7WP), which is the bed whose battery and lighting options are printed as LINAK parts. The Encore MC9 and the Standard ReadyWide MC7 builds run TiMOTION controls and are not what this kit is for. Call (905) 451-7743 with the model and serial number and we will confirm before anything ships.
Does this include the alarm or the sensor pad?
No. This is the cable kit. The sensor and the monitor are separate items. Tell us what the care plan calls for and we will quote the complete set so nothing arrives half finished.
How long is the cable, and what connector does it use?
Savaria does not publish a length, a connector type or a contact rating for any of the four codes, so we do not quote one. If your contractor needs those figures, ask us and we will get them from Savaria in writing before you order.
Will it work with our nurse call system?
That depends on the contact type your system expects, which is exactly what the two versions of this kit exist to match. Give us the nurse call make and model and we will tell you which of the four codes to order.
What is the warranty?
One year. Span puts cables and bed accessories in its one-year row rather than in the five-year electrical components row. Labour for service is not part of the manufacturer warranty. Our own service and repairs department handles the claim with you.
