Description

The Fortress 1700-DT 3-wheel scooter is a Canadian mid-size mobility scooter with Sunrise Medical Canada's Duro-Torque drive. Westin Healthcare sells it, delivers it, and sets it up for homes in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area.

This is the 3-wheel DT trim (SKU family HC-018433, ADP code WS1FS0015), not the transaxle TA trim and not the 4-wheel DT. Sunrise Medical Canada's current Fortress page lists the 1700 series as no longer available to order. Westin still sells and services the 1700-DT we have. For a new factory Fortress, the current CA lineup is the S410, the S425, and the S700. Sunrise rates the 1700-DT at 350 lbs (159 kg), 5.5 mph (8.9 km/h), and up to 30 miles (50 km) per charge on Group 22 batteries. Those batteries are sold separately.

Who this scooter is for

This scooter is for a person who wants a mid-size 3-wheel for mixed indoor and outdoor use on hard, reasonably flat ground, and who fits a 350 lb rating and an 18 inch captain seat. Families usually call us when a travel scooter feels too small and a full-size 15 km/h scooter feels too large.

If you want the same DT drive with a wider stance, see the Fortress 1700-DT 4-wheel scooter. If you want a current factory 4-wheel with a tight turn, start with the Fortress S410. If you need a scooter that folds for a car trunk or a flight, start with the Solax Transformer folding scooter. The 1700-DT is not a folding travel scooter.

  • Mid-size 3-wheel for neighbourhood streets, shops, and wider indoor halls
  • 350 lb (159 kg) rating and a 42 inch turning radius
  • Duro-Torque 4-pole drive, not the TA transaxle

Range, speed, and batteries

Sunrise Medical Canada's owner manual prints a top speed of 5.5 mph (8.9 km/h) for the 1700-DT and a theoretical maximum distance of up to 30 miles (50 km) per charge. That range figure varies with rider weight, tire condition, terrain, battery charge, and battery condition.

The battery bay takes two U-1 / Group 22 gel batteries, 40 Ah. They are sold separately. Charge after each full day of use. Sunrise says the minimum charge time for gel batteries is about 8 hours, and most packs reach about 80 percent after 8 to 12 hours. Charge at least once a week if you only ride occasionally. In winter, Sunrise says capacity drops to about 75 percent in light frost and to about 50 percent below -5 C, which shortens range. Keep the batteries fully charged. Do not run them flat.

Portability and transport

The Fortress 1700-DT 3-wheel scooter is a mid-size machine, not a suitcase scooter. Sunrise lists 160 lbs (73 kg) without batteries. When the scooter is separated, the heaviest piece is 65 lbs (29 kg). The tiller folds. The seat lifts off. Westin delivers and assembles it; do not plan to lift the whole scooter into a car by yourself.

If the assembled scooter fits in a suitable vehicle, Sunrise says not to use it as a passenger seat, not to lift it by the plastic covers, and to secure it so it is not in freewheel. This is not an airline scooter. Lead-acid Group 22 batteries are not a cabin lithium pack.

Fortress 1700-DT 3-wheel scooter specifications

These figures are for the Fortress 1700-DT 3-wheel (HC-018433) as printed in Sunrise Medical Canada's owner manual and 2019 brochure. The specification tab holds the stored values.

Weight capacity 350 lbs (159 kg). Top speed 5.5 mph (8.9 km/h). Range up to 30 miles (50 km) per the manual table. Turning radius 42 inches. Overall length 47.5 inches. Overall width 24.5 inches. Ground clearance 4 inches. Obstacle height 3 inches. Tires 10 x 3 inches, pneumatic, 50 psi. Captain seat 18 inches wide by 17.5 inches deep. Seat height to the floor pan 17, 18, or 19 inches (17 inches by removing the seat slider). Weight without batteries 160 lbs (73 kg). Heaviest piece 65 lbs (29 kg). Charger 8 amp off-board. Controller 70 to 90 amp.

Colours on the Sunrise brochure are Continental Red, Midnight Blue, and Classic Black. The high-back captain seat is not available on 3-wheel models.

Color

Use Color to pick Black, Blue, or Red. Those are the three finishes Sunrise printed as Classic Black, Midnight Blue, and Continental Red.

3-wheel or 4-wheel Fortress 1700-DT

The 3-wheel DT turns in 42 inches and weighs 160 lbs without batteries. The 4-wheel DT turns in 57.5 inches, weighs 171 lbs without batteries, and uses the 19.75 inch high-back captain seat as the brochure standard. Speed, range, capacity, and the Duro-Torque drive are the same. Choose 3-wheel if doorways and indoor turns come first. Choose 4-wheel if you want the wider stance outdoors. Both are mid-size. Neither is a folding travel scooter.

For a new factory Fortress, the current CA 4-wheels are the S410 (58.2 in turn, 34 km printed range), the S425 (12 km/h outdoor), and the S700 (15 km/h outdoor). There is no current 3-wheel S-series on sunrisemedical.ca.

Funding help for a mobility scooter in Ontario

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) can fund 75% of the cost of a mobility scooter when the need is long-term and the scooter is prescribed through an assessment by an ADP-registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist, and some income-support programs cover the full cost. Not every scooter qualifies, so talk to us before you buy. March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs can also help. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through.

Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA

Westin's own team delivers and sets up the Fortress 1700-DT 3-wheel scooter across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. We bring it in, assemble it, and show you the tiller, charger, and freewheel lever before we leave.

We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a mid-size 3-wheel first. For a scheduled in-home setup, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works. Same-day delivery is offered through our hospital bed rental service; purchased scooters are delivered and set up on a scheduled date.

This mobility scooter is oversized. The Canada-wide free ground-shipping offer on smaller goods does not apply. If the scooter is going outside the GTA, ask us for a freight quote. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery (bring-in, unwrap, test, take packaging away) is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.

Service and warranty

When something on the scooter needs work, you call the shop that set it up, not a distant parts desk. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department. Our technicians come to the home or workplace.

Sunrise Medical Fortress warranty

Sunrise Medical Canada's owner manual for the original purchaser is lifetime on the main frame weldment, 3 years non-prorated on the Duro-Torque motor and differential and on the tiller structure, 2 years non-prorated on the controller, wiring, electronics, and charger, 1 year on the seat assembly, and 1 year on DT differential bearings. Batteries follow the battery maker's warranty. Tires, tubes, plastic covers, the basket, bulbs, and upholstery are wear items. Labour and shipping sit outside that term. Prolonged rain or snow is treated as abuse. We handle the claim with you. Sunrise asks for an annual service inspection.

Frequently asked questions

How far can a mobility scooter go?

The Fortress 1700-DT 3-wheel scooter is printed at up to 30 miles (50 km) per charge in Sunrise Medical Canada's owner manual. Real range shortens with rider weight, soft tires, hills, cold, and aging Group 22 batteries.

How long does a mobility scooter take to charge?

The Fortress 1700-DT uses two gel Group 22 batteries. Sunrise says the minimum charge is about 8 hours, and most packs reach about 80 percent after 8 to 12 hours. Charge after each full day, or at least once a week if you ride less often.

Can I take a mobility scooter on a plane?

The Fortress 1700-DT 3-wheel scooter is not an airline travel scooter. It is a 160 lb mid-size chassis plus two Group 22 gel batteries. Tell the airline only if you are shipping freight. For a folding lithium scooter, see the Solax Transformer.

Does ADP cover scooters?

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program can help fund a power scooter after an ADP-registered therapist assessment. The Fortress 1700-DT 3-wheel carries device code WS1FS0015. Eligibility is personal. Talk to us before you buy. The funding section above is the starting point.

3 wheel vs 4 wheel scooter?

A 3-wheel mobility scooter turns tighter. The Fortress 1700-DT 3-wheel turns in 42 inches. The 4-wheel DT turns in 57.5 inches and sits on a wider stance. Speed, range, and the 350 lb rating are the same on both DT trims.

Can you use a mobility scooter in the rain?

The Fortress 1700-DT can be driven carefully on wet pavement. Sunrise says to go slowly on rain, ice, or snow, to keep salt water and sand off the scooter, and not to spray or pour water on it. Store it clean and dry. Prolonged rain or snow voids the warranty as abuse.

Do mobility scooters work in winter?

The Fortress 1700-DT can be used in cold weather with care. Sunrise says light frost cuts battery capacity to about 75 percent, and below -5 C capacity is about 50 percent, so range falls. Keep it off road salt.

What is the weight limit for a mobility scooter?

The Fortress 1700-DT 3-wheel scooter is rated at 350 lbs (159 kg). Stay at or under that figure. The TA trim is a different, lower rating and is not this product.

How wide is a mobility scooter?

The Fortress 1700-DT 3-wheel scooter is 24.5 inches wide and 47.5 inches long. Measure doorways and lifts against those numbers, plus the rider's elbows on the armrests (18 to 24 inches between arms).

Can a mobility scooter go in a car trunk?

The Fortress 1700-DT 3-wheel scooter is not a trunk-fold travel scooter. Sunrise allows separating it (heaviest piece 65 lbs) or loading the assembled scooter into a suitable vehicle with proper tie-downs. Westin delivers it so you do not have to lift it.

Is the Fortress 1700 discontinued?

Sunrise Medical Canada's current Fortress 1700 page says the series is no longer available to order. Westin Healthcare still sells and services the 1700-DT 3-wheel we have. The current factory Fortress lineup on sunrisemedical.ca is the S410, S425, and S700. Ask us what is in the shop before you plan around a new 1700 factory order.
