Description

The Span America PressureGuard CFT is a non-powered air therapy mattress for people who are being treated for a pressure injury or who are at high risk of developing one. It does the work of a treatment surface without a pump, a cord or a control unit. Westin Healthcare supplies it across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area and will match the size to the bed frame before you order.

Inside the foam shell is a network of interconnected air cylinders and elasticized reservoirs. Span America calls this Constant Force Technology: as the person shifts, the reservoirs absorb displaced air and re-equalize the pressures, so the surface adjusts itself to the user's weight and position without anyone setting a dial.

Who the CFT is for

Span America lists the CFT for the treatment of stage 1 to 4 pressure injuries and for preventing skin breakdown in the high risk or severely compromised patient. The manufacturer also names these situations:

  • The person can be positioned off the injury in at least two positions.
  • There is a history of previously healed pressure injuries.
  • The person can be repositioned frequently.
  • Bony prominences are poorly padded.

The CFT is classed by Span America as a non-powered Group II support surface, Medicare code E0373. If the clinical need is microclimate management, moisture removal or lateral rotation, that is a powered surface and a different product. Ask us about the PressureGuard Easy Air LR or the PressureGuard Protocol instead.

Why non-powered matters here

A CFT makes no noise, generates no heat and uses no electricity, so a power interruption does not change what the surface does. There is nothing to program, nothing to alarm and no unit hanging off the footboard. The only routine attention it needs is a periodic air boost with the Air System Renewal Kit, which we can supply.

Set against that, the CFT cannot do the things that need a pump. It does not manage skin moisture and it does not turn the person. Choose it when the goal is pressure redistribution and stability, and choose a powered surface when the goal is microclimate or rotation.

Stability and safety built into the shell

  • Safety Edge. A two-part bolster system runs down each side. The sturdy outer bolster holds firm support, and the slotted inner bolster compresses slightly and angles inward toward the centre of the mattress. That helps with sitting on the edge to transfer, and it is what an air-only surface cannot offer.
  • Geo-Matt top surface. More than 800 individually responsive foam cells in distinct head, torso and foot zones. The segmentation is what reduces shear as the person moves against the surface.
  • Heel Slope. A subtle taper at the foot end that moves load onto the pressure-tolerant lower legs and calves while still supporting the feet.

Sizes and weight limits

Use the selector to pick the size on your quote. Eight are listed, and the weight limit is not the same across all of them.

  • Hospital sizes, 7 in high: 75 x 35 in (8075-29), 80 x 32 in (8280-29), 80 x 35 in (8080-29) and 84 x 35 in (8084-29). Weight limit 500 lb.
  • Dual King, 80 x 38 in (CF8038-HS-29): weight limit 500 lb. Span America states that to make up a split King surface of 80 x 76 in you order this item together with the matching non-powered air mattress RW8038-29 for the other half of the bed.
  • Full 75 x 54 in (CF7554-HS-29), Full Long 80 x 54 in (CF8054-HS-29) and Queen 80 x 60 in (CF8060-HS-29): weight limit 750 lb total, for one or two users.

Send us the frame the mattress is going on and we will confirm the size. Getting the length right matters more on a home bed than people expect.

Span America prints a 7 in height for the four hospital sizes and does not print a height for the four consumer sizes, so none is stated for them. Call (905) 451-7743 if the deck depth is tight and we will confirm it with Savaria before you order.

Fitting it to the bed

The CFT sits on a flat deck like an ordinary mattress. There is no pump to mount, no cord to route and no outlet to find. If your frame has a recessed deck, that is a different build and the CFT is not offered in a recessed-deck version; ask us about the PressureGuard Custom Care Convertible, which is.

All models ship fully assembled in a flat carton by common carrier.

Funding help for a therapeutic mattress in Ontario

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) does not cover hospital beds or mattresses, so plan around other routes. Funding that may help instead: March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through before you buy.

Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA

Westin's own team delivers across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a therapeutic surface before you commit. Call (905) 451-7743 or use the contact page and tell us the frame and the clinical goal, and we will put the right size on the quote. Shipping terms are described on the shipping policy page, and any charge is confirmed on your order.

Service and warranty

Span America warrants the CFT mattress for 5 years, non-prorated. Because there is no control unit there is no second warranty term to track. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department for the beds and lifts these surfaces work alongside, and we can supply the Air System Renewal Kit when the surface is due for an air boost. Ask us for the Savaria terms that ship with your order.

Frequently asked questions

How much weight can a PressureGuard CFT take?

500 lb on the four hospital sizes (8075-29, 8280-29, 8080-29, 8084-29) and on the Dual King CF8038-HS-29. The Full, Full Long and Queen sizes are rated to 750 lb total, which Span America states covers one or two users.

Does the CFT need to be plugged in?

No. It has no control unit and uses no electricity. That also means it makes no noise, produces no heat and is unaffected by a power cut.

What does Constant Force Technology actually do?

It links the air cylinders inside the mattress to elasticized reservoirs. When the person shifts, displaced air moves into the reservoirs and the pressures re-equalize on their own, so the surface stays at a therapeutic level regardless of the user's weight or position. Nothing has to be adjusted by hand.

Is the CFT suitable for treating an existing pressure injury?

Span America lists it for the treatment of stage 1 to 4 pressure injuries and classes it as a non-powered Group II support surface. The clinical decision still belongs to the treating team; talk to us and to them together and we will help match the surface to the plan.

What maintenance does it need?

Very little. There is nothing to set up or program. Span America states the system needs a periodic air boost, which is done with the Air System Renewal Kit. The cover wipes clean with neutral suds or approved cleaning agents; avoid bleach.

Which size fits a standard hospital bed?

Most Ontario home and long term care frames take the 80 x 35 in size (8080-29). Narrower and longer frames take 80 x 32 in or 84 x 35 in. Measure the deck, or send us the bed model and we will confirm it.

What is the difference between the CFT and a powered PressureGuard?

The CFT redistributes pressure without a pump. A powered PressureGuard such as the Protocol adds alternating pressure and microclimate management, which need a control unit and a wall outlet. If moisture or rotation is the problem, you need the powered surface.

Can I put a CFT on a bed with a recessed deck?

Not this model. Span America builds recessed-deck versions of some PressureGuard surfaces but not the CFT. Tell us the frame and we will point you to one that is built for it.

Is the mattress fire rated?

Yes. All models are certified by an independent testing organization for conformance to NFPA 101 (ASTM E1590), California Technical Bulletin 117, and 16 CFR parts 1632 and 1633.
