Motion Composites Apex A - Rigid Category 4 Wheelchair

The Motion Composites APEX A is an AluLite aluminum rigid wheelchair built to the person's measurements. Westin Healthcare configures it in Brampton after an ADP-registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist assesses the need, then helps with the ADP submission. It is a Category 4 ultralight rigid chair. ADP can fund 75% of the approved price for eligible clients. The assessment comes first. This is not a boxed chair that ships the next day.

Motion Composites lists a 10.6 lb transport weight on a 16 by 16 inch frame with the rear wheels, armrests, cushion, and anti-tippers off, an 18.0 lb lightest functional weight with wheels, locks, back upholstery, and cushion on, and a 265 lb weight limit. Seat width and depth each run 12 to 20 inches. The APEX A is the aluminum APEX. The carbon sibling is the Motion Composites APEX C.

Who this chair is for

This chair is for a person who will self-propel a made-to-measure rigid frame, fits the 12 to 20 inch seat range, and stays at or under Motion Composites' 265 lb rating. Families usually call us when they want APEX geometry and adjustability in aluminum rather than carbon.

Design and build

The frame is a rigid cantilever in triple-butted AluLite aluminum, an alloy Motion Composites describes as stronger and lighter than 7005. It does not fold. Rear wheels come off for the car. A carbon camber tube and a carbon rear rigidizer sit on the aluminum frame so the rear stays stiff while you push. Laser-etched marks and built-in bubble levels help the dealer set the casters and the axle the same on both sides.

The tubes are triple-butted: thinner where the load is low, thicker where the load is high. A front bumper protects the leading edge. The back angle, seat-to-floor height, and rear-wheel position are set on the order and can be changed later as the person changes. Newton parts are the lightweight accessory line that matches the chair.

Warranty for the first user is Motion Composites' Canada term: five years on the aluminum frame and aluminum cross-brace; one year on Motion Composites-made components; 30 days on tires, tubes, cushions, slings, upholstery, armrests, and grips. The expected life of the aluminum frame is five years. The term does not cover wear, neglect, or going over the weight limit.

How the chair is specified

The APEX A is built on Motion Composites' order after the assessment. Westin records seat width, seat depth, colour, back height, seat-to-floor, camber, axle position, and front-frame angle with the therapist. Black is the usual aluminum frame colour. Frame and accent colours can be mixed on the form.

Those choices are not a boxed stock list. The therapist and Westin write them once the person has been measured. A floor chair, if we can show one, will not match every prescribed size.

ADP funding for a Category 4 wheelchair in Ontario

This chair is an ADP-eligible category device. Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) pays 75% of the approved price for eligible clients, and clients receiving Ontario Works, ODSP, or ACSD support can be covered for the full cost. Frequently asked questions

What does Category 4 mean on this chair?

Category 4 is the ultralight rigid group: a rigid frame whose published light weight sits under 25 lb. The APEX A is a rigid aluminum chair. Motion Composites prints 10.6 lb for the defined transport setup and 18.0 lb for the lightest functional setup. Both figures are under that line.

Who qualifies for ADP on a Category 4 chair?

Ontario residents with a valid health card whose disability needs the device for six months or longer, after an ADP-registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist assesses them. Income is not the test. We cannot promise that a specific person will qualify. Devices bought before those steps are not reimbursed.

How does the 75 / 25 split work?

ADP can fund 75% of the approved price for eligible clients. The person pays the remaining 25% unless they are on Ontario Works, ODSP, or ACSD, in which case ADP can cover 100% of the approved price. Extra items that are not on the approved list are paid separately. Talk to us before anyone orders.

What happens at the assessment?

An ADP-registered therapist measures the person, confirms a long-term need, and writes the Category 4 prescription. Westin then builds the Motion Composites order and helps submit the ADP form. The chair is made after that path is in motion, not off a shelf.

How long does ADP take?

Ontario's mobility-aids page says ADP aims to review a complete application within 8 weeks. Build time at the factory sits on top of that. Ask us for a current picture once the therapist has written the order. Do not buy first and apply later.

Can I try an APEX A before we order?

Come into a Brampton or Toronto store and ask what we can show. A floor chair will not match every prescribed size. We will tell you honestly what is on the floor.

How should the seat width be chosen?

The therapist measures seated hip width and leaves a little room on each side. Motion Composites offers 12 to 20 inches wide and 12 to 20 inches deep. Do not guess a width from a photo.

Is the APEX A the same chair as the APEX C?

No. Both are APEX rigid chairs with the same size ranges. The A is AluLite aluminum (10.6 lb transport, five-year aluminum frame). The C is T700 carbon (9.7 lb transport, lifetime carbon frame). The therapist and Westin will say which material fits the prescription.

Will the APEX A fold into a car trunk?

The frame does not fold. Rear wheels come off, which is how Motion Composites reaches the 10.6 lb transport figure. Two people and a hatch or a larger trunk make the lift easier. It is a rigid everyday chair, not a transport chair with small rear wheels.

What is the weight capacity?

Motion Composites lists 265 lb for the APEX A. Stay at or under that rating. Do not use a 350 lb figure unless the order includes Motion Composites' HD kit, which is a different build.

What is the warranty?

Five years on the aluminum frame and cross-brace for the first user, one year on Motion Composites-made components, 30 days on wear items. Westin Healthcare processes the claim. Details are on our service and repairs page.

What if ADP declines the application?
