The Handicare Bure Rise & Go Belt MULTI, M is Direct Healthcare Group's power rise stand-up harness for the Bure Rise & Go walker, manufacturer code 56-384-MULTI-M. It goes around the hips and the bottom, connects to the walker with two attachment straps, and lets the machine's power rise function bring the user to standing. This listing is size Medium (M), for a range of 105-120 cm (41.3-47.2 in). The belt is made in four sizes and they are otherwise identical. If the person is between two sizes, call us before you order rather than guessing: a belt that is too big will not sit low enough across the bottom to give the support the manufacturer designed in.

Sizes, and which one to order

Direct Healthcare Group publishes one measurement range per size:

Two things worth knowing before you measure. First, the ranges overlap: 110 to 120 cm falls inside both Medium and Large as the manufacturer prints them, so somebody in that band can be fitted either way and the choice comes down to build and comfort. Second, the manufacturer does not label which circumference the range is taken over. The belt is fitted low across the hips and bottom, so measure around the hips at their widest point, and ask us if the answer sits near a boundary. Direct Healthcare Group also builds an XS in some markets, but it is not part of the North American accessory list and we do not stock it.

How the belt works

The Bure Rise & Go is not a hoist. It is a walker with a patented power rise function, and the belt is the part that transmits that power to the person. Direct Healthcare Group describes the power rise harness as designed to reach as far down across the bottom as possible, which provides optimum support and results in a natural standing action.

The manufacturer's fitting sequence, from the instructions for use, runs like this:

1. Fit the belt as low as possible across the hips and bottom, with the broad upper part around the hips and the narrow lower part around the bottom.
2. Attach the strap with the Velcro fastener and tighten it using the steplessly adjustable safety belt.
3. Place the user's legs at a 90 degree angle with their feet on the floor or on the transfer plate, and set the shin supports against the shins without pressing on the kneecap or the patellar tendon.
4. Thread both attachment belts through the walker's frame and the green locking devices, all the way through.
5. Connect the belt to the attachment belts and tighten them using the loops. The belts must be taut on both sides. Slide the loop back once the straps are tight, which stops them tangling.
6. Swing the forearm supports aside, lock at least two castors, fold the stirrup down and run the power rise while one carer stands in front of the user.

The manufacturer notes that in most cases the user will not reach a fully upright position on the machine alone. Encourage them to finish the stand themselves, or take up the slack on the adjustable straps.

The belt is split at the rear. The lower part around the bottom opens on demand, which is what makes it practical to leave the belt on for a visit to the toilet instead of taking it off and refitting it afterwards. Direct Healthcare Group also says the belt may remain attached for enhanced safety during transport, for example when the user is being wheeled on the transfer plate.

Which walker it fits

This belt belongs to the power rise machines and to nothing else. Direct Healthcare Group's fitment matrix lists the MULTI stand-up harness with attachment straps against the Bure Rise & Go and the Bure Rise & Go DB, and against no other Bure walker.

That distinction is easy to get wrong, because the rest of the Bure range looks similar. A Bure Standard, a Bure Low, a Bure Space, a Bure Double 2.0 or a Bure XL has no power rise function, so there is nothing for this belt to connect to. Those walkers take the standard gait training kit instead, which is a different product with a different job. Of the walkers Westin sells, this belt fits the Bure Rise & Go DB.

Inspection and replacement, the parts people miss

Two manufacturer rules matter more on this part than on anything else in the Bure range, and neither is optional.

Check the belts before every stand. The instructions for use tell you to check especially that the belts are undamaged, that they are not worn or frayed, and that the holder and straps are not bent or crooked. If the holder and belts are crooked, the manufacturer says that is a sign the product has been overloaded, and the frame must be replaced before further use. That is a walker problem the belt tells you about, so do not ignore it.

Replace the belt and the attachment belts every three years. Direct Healthcare Group's maintenance table is explicit: harness and attachment belts must be replaced every three years, and the action is to check the harness labelling, and if the production date is older than three years the harness and belts must be scrapped. The date is on the sewn-in label. Put it in the service diary when the belt arrives rather than finding out at an inspection.

The belt is washable at 60 degrees. Follow the label sewn into the belt: the label is the authority on your particular unit. Textile products in the Bure range carry an expected service life of about two years under normal use, which the manufacturer defines as two wash cycles a week, so a belt in heavy institutional laundry may reach the end of its life well before the three-year replacement date.

Direct Healthcare Group rates the belt at 150 kg (330 lb), the same as the walker. The general rule for assembled equipment applies here as everywhere else: the lowest rating among the walker, the belt and any other accessory is the rating of the whole assembly. The manufacturer also asks that a risk assessment be done on the user before the walker is used at all, to confirm they can stand and perform simple leg movements, and that the user is never left alone during a transfer.

Warranty and inspection

Direct Healthcare Group states in the Bure instructions for use that the warranty applies only if repairs or alterations are made by personnel authorized by Direct Healthcare Group, and that repairs and maintenance may only be done by authorized personnel using original spare parts. No year count is printed in the manual, so ask us for the current terms that ship with your serial number and we will handle a claim with you.

The manufacturer also requires the walker to undergo a thorough inspection at least once every twelve months, performed by authorized personnel and in accordance with Direct Healthcare Group's instructions. Accessories are part of that inspection: the manual tells you to verify that any accessory fitted to the walker is properly attached before use, and to test it against the user's needs and functional ability.
