Description

The Span America Encore Bed MC9 ReadyWide with USB Charger is Span America's premium long term care hospital bed, built on the MC9R Encore platform with the ReadyWide expanders already fitted. Span America is a Savaria company. Westin Healthcare supplies it, delivers it, and sets it up for long term care homes and for families in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area whose therapist has asked for this grade of bed.

Four motors move the height, the back, the knee and the clinical positions. Span lists a floor to deck range of 7-7/8 inches to 31 inches, a 600 lb safe working load and a 450 lb maximum patient weight. GlideAlign retracts the seat deck up to 12 inches as the head section rises, so the person stays lined up on the bed. ReadyWide takes the sleep surface from 36 inches to 39 inches, then to 42 inches, without tools.

What this model adds

Every Span order code is its own factory build, and this page is order code MC9RWB-C. This model is the boxed build of the Encore with ReadyWide, and it leaves the factory with Span's USB charging kit already fitted. There is no built-in backup battery on this code.

  • Factory installed USB charging kit
  • Boxed shipping build

If a different combination suits the room better, the sibling codes below are the same bed with different factory options. Ask us and we will order the code that matches the care plan.

Who this bed is for

This bed is for a long term care setting, or for a private home that needs the same clinical features a care home would specify. It is not a basic homecare frame. Span writes the Encore for long term care: staff lockouts, Comfort Chair, Trendelenburg, reverse Trendelenburg, Cardiac Care positioning, Smart Stop and a retractable deck.

Purchasing coordinators and directors of care call us when a resident needs a low, expandable, retractable deck with a 600 lb safe working load. Families call when a therapist has named this platform. If you want the base Encore ReadyWide configuration with the picker for boards, rails and field accessories, see the Span America Encore Bed Package. If you do not need the retractable deck, see the Span America Advantage or the Span America Rexx. For a simpler homecare package, start with the Drive Delta 1000.

  • Long term care homes and retirement residences that need a low, expandable resident bed
  • Private homes where a therapist has asked for GlideAlign, Smart Stop or ReadyWide
  • Anyone who needs electric height, back and knee plus staff-only Trendelenburg and Comfort Chair

What you get

The frame arrives in the factory build described above, with the ReadyWide expanders on the bed. The hand pendant runs everyday height, back, knee, auto contour, Comfort Chair and the under-bed light. The foot end staff controller adds the lockouts, Trendelenburg, reverse Trendelenburg, Comfort Chair and rapid head deck lowering. Smart Stop pauses lowering at 12.5 inches, and only the staff controller takes the deck the rest of the way down to 7-7/8 inches.

Head and foot boards, side rails and a mattress are quoted with the bed rather than included on this order code. Tell us the room and we will put the set together.

  • Eleven function hand pendant and seventeen function foot end staff controller with lockouts
  • GlideAlign retractable deck with 12 inches of seat deck travel
  • ReadyWide two click expansion, 36 to 39 to 42 inches
  • Smart Stop auto pause at 12.5 inches, with flashing under-bed indicators in the low zone
  • Comfort Chair, Trendelenburg to 16 degrees, reverse Trendelenburg to 14 degrees, auto contour
  • Four DC self lubricating linear actuators, IPX4 for the bed, IP66 for the electrical components
  • Trapezoidal slat deck, steel end and side mattress stops, vascular foot ratchet, baseboard bumper
  • Heavy duty dual 3 in swivel casters, mobility at any height, head end directional lock out, total floor lock
  • Dual position, dual intensity under-bed lighting as standard
  • USB charging kit fitted at the factory

Overall length is 82 in, 86 in or 90 in with the head and foot boards on, bumper excluded. The bed runs on 120 V, 60 Hz single phase power, draws up to 3.5 A and uses a hospital grade three prong cord at least 2.5 metres long. Span classifies it as Class 1, Type B, with a maximum acoustic output of 70 dBA. The bed is certified to ANSI/AAMI ES60601-1, CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 60601-1, CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 60601-2-52 for medical beds, and CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 60601-1-2 for EMC.

The rest of the Encore family at Westin

Span sells this bed as a set of factory builds rather than as one bed with an options list you tick at the end. Each code below is the same platform with a different combination fitted at the factory. Pick the one that matches the room and the care plan.

Which rails, boards and accessories fit

Span lists these parts against the Encore: molded half head assist rails as a pair (R9308H), a split side rail pair (R9519), molded three position pivot assist rails singly (R9958-L and R9958-R) or as a pair (R9959), the four inch bed extender kit (Q6785) with its storage kit (Q6760), the transport dolly set (Q6699), the foot end equipment bar (Q6729), the roller bumper (Q6531), the trapeze pole (Q6730) with its mounting frame (Q6731), and an adjustable board mounted I.V. pole (BS79) with its board mounted base (CS82). The ReadyWide expander kit (Q6689) is already fitted on this code.

We already stock the three position pivot assist set for Encore and Advantage ReadyWide, which mounts at 36 inches and follows the deck out to 39 and 42 inches. Head and foot boards come in the Standard and Lincoln melamine profiles and the Lethbridge and Trenton Elite HPL profiles, in Valley Oak, Candle Light, Hardrock Maple, Summer Flame and Choco. Valley Oak is a standard board finish only. Match the board width to the width you will run.

A mattress is not included. Size it to the deck you will run and to the length you order. Span asks for a properly sized mattress with firm borders so the person cannot be trapped between the mattress and the rail. We fit therapeutic surfaces in these sizes; see medical mattresses and our bed rails range, or browse all long term care beds.

Funding help for a hospital bed in Ontario

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) does not cover hospital beds. OHIP does not cover them either. Depending on the person, other programs may help, including March of Dimes, Veterans Affairs Canada, and community support programs.

Westin Healthcare works with these funding programs every week. Call (905) 451-7743 or use the contact page and we will check which programs fit your situation before any paperwork starts. The funding page lists the programs we work with.

Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA

Westin's own team delivers and sets up this bed across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. We bring it in, assemble it, and show you the hand control before we leave.

We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a bed first. For a scheduled in-home setup, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works. Same-day delivery is offered through our hospital bed rental service; purchased beds are delivered and set up on a scheduled date.

Hospital beds are oversized. The Canada-wide free ground-shipping offer on smaller goods does not apply. If the bed is going outside the GTA, ask us for a freight quote. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery (bring-in, unwrap, test, take packaging away) is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.

Service, repairs, and warranty

When something on the bed needs work, you call the shop that set it up, not a US parts desk. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department. Our technicians come to the home or workplace.

Span America manufacturer warranty

Span's limited warranty for the original purchaser is 15 years on the frame, 15 years on all welds in the steel structure, 5 years on electrical components (the control box and the actuators), and 1 year on batteries, hand pendants, foot end controllers, cables, parts subject to wear, and bed accessories. Labour is not covered by Span. We handle the warranty claim with you. Ask us if an extended warranty is offered for your order.

Frequently asked questions

Does OHIP cover hospital beds?

No. Hospital beds in Ontario are not covered by OHIP. Depending on the person, March of Dimes, Veterans Affairs Canada, or a community support program may still help. Call (905) 451-7743 and we will check which path fits before anyone starts paperwork.

Does ADP cover hospital beds in Ontario?

No. Ontario's Assistive Devices Program does not cover hospital beds. OHIP does not cover them either. The funding page lists the programs Westin Healthcare works with, including March of Dimes, Veterans Affairs Canada, and community support programs.

What is included with order code MC9RWB-C?

You get the Span America Encore frame in this factory build: factory USB charging kit, boxed. The hand pendant and the foot end staff controller come with the bed, and the ReadyWide expanders are on the frame. Head and foot boards, side rails, and a mattress are quoted with the bed rather than included on this code. Call (905) 451-7743 and we will build the room around it.

What does GlideAlign actually do?

GlideAlign is Span's retractable deck. As the head section rises, the seat deck retracts up to 12 inches so the person stays lined up on the bed instead of sliding down toward the foot. Span's stated reasons are fall prevention, because everything at the bedside stays within reach, and staff protection, because there is less repositioning to do.

How does the ReadyWide width expansion work?

The expanders are already on the frame. Press both spring buttons and slide the expander out: one click gives 39 inches and a second click gives 42 inches, from a 36 inch deck. Span's warning is to set every expander piece to the same width so the extension is equal on both sides, and to fit a mattress and extension pads sized to that width so there are no entrapment gaps.

What is Smart Stop?

Smart Stop pauses the bed automatically as the deck comes down to 12.5 inches from the floor. That is Span's egress height, where the person can sit with a roughly 90 degree entry and exit angle. Going below that point into the low height zone is a foot end staff control action, not something the hand pendant can do on its own.

What is the weight capacity of this bed?

Span lists a 600 lb (272 kg) safe working load. That figure covers the person plus the mattress, the boards, the rails and anything else on the bed. Span lists a separate maximum patient weight of 450 lb (204 kg) for the person alone. If the person's own weight is near or over that figure, ask us about a bariatric hospital bed instead of stretching this frame.

What mattress fits this bed?

A mattress is not included. Size it to the length you order and the width you will actually run: 76 inches or 80 inches long, by 36, 39 or 42 inches wide. Span asks for a properly sized mattress with firm borders so the person cannot be trapped between the mattress and the rail, and points to the FDA entrapment guidelines. We stock therapeutic surfaces in these sizes, including the Geo-Mattress 350 and the Geo-Mattress Max; see all medical mattresses. Ask your therapist before you pick an alternating pressure or low air loss surface.

Can a backup battery be added to this bed?

Yes. Span builds the backup battery into the Encore at the factory under option Q6701, and there is also a field installed version (Q6700). If you want the battery from day one, order one of the sibling codes below that already carries it rather than adding it later. Call (905) 451-7743 and we will confirm which route suits the room.

What is the factory USB charging kit?

It is Span's USB charging kit, fitted on the bed at the factory instead of added in the field. It gives the person a place to charge a phone, a tablet or a hearing aid case at the bedside without running a bar of outlets under the bed.

Does this bed have under-bed lighting?

Yes, and it is standard on the Encore. The indicators flash while the deck is in the low height zone, and they can be switched over to discreet floor level illumination at night. Both the hand pendant and the foot end controller have a light button.

What does boxed mean on this order code?

Boxed is Span's cartoned shipping build for the bed. It changes how the bed arrives, not what the bed does. Our own team unpacks it, assembles it in the room, tests every function and takes the packaging away, so the carton is our problem rather than yours.

Can I rent a hospital bed before buying?

Westin Healthcare rents standard full-electric hospital beds with side rails and a therapeutic mattress. See current packages on the hospital bed rentals page. This Span bed itself is a purchase item. If you later buy, ask about the Rental to Purchase First Month Credit program and we will apply the program rules to the bed you keep.

How fast can a hospital bed be delivered in the GTA?

Westin's team delivers and sets up purchased beds across Brampton and the GTA on a scheduled date. Call (905) 451-7743 for the next opening. Same-day delivery belongs to the hospital bed rental service, not automatically to a purchased bed.

What is the warranty on this bed?

Span's limited warranty for the original purchaser is 15 years on the frame, 15 years on all welds in the steel structure, 5 years on electrical components, which Span defines as the control box and the actuators, and 1 year on batteries, hand pendants, foot end controllers, cables, parts subject to wear and bed accessories. Labour is not covered by Span. Westin Healthcare processes the warranty work on our service and repairs page.

Where can I see one of these beds?

We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area, and the Brampton showroom on Fisherman Drive is the full one for beds. If getting to a store is the hard part, book a free home assessment and a consultant will measure the room and leave a written quote. Related platforms are the Span America Encore Bed Package and the rest of our hospital beds range.
