Description
The Span America 42 Inch Deck Width Expander Kit, Advantage And Rexx (manufacturer code Q6709) widens the sleep surface of a Span Advantage bed from its standard 35 inches to 42 inches. The Advantage is a low bed built around a fixed 35 inch deck, and this is the kit that makes it a wide bed without changing the bed. Westin Healthcare specifies, supplies and services Span beds in Brampton and across the Greater Toronto Area.
Savaria's own sheet for this bed, the SPAN Advantage brochure, prints the code in its item table as "42" Fixed Expander Kit" and, on the same sheet, lists "Tool-less bed expanders for 42" width" among the ways to customize the bed. The cover of that brochure reads "Optional tool-less expansion up to 42"". Read together: the width is fixed at 42 inches once the kit is on, and Span's own description of the expanders is tool-less. The 2026 Savaria range and Span's part description both call it a deck width expander kit.
The three ways to change an Advantage's dimensions
Span sells width and length separately, and they are different codes. Ordering the wrong one is the most common mistake on this bed.
| Kit | Code | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| 42 inch deck width expander kit | Q6709 | Widens the sleep surface from the standard 35 in to 42 in |
| 39 inch expander kit | Q6633 | Widens the sleep surface from the standard 35 in to 39 in |
| 4 inch bed extender kit | Q6736 | Lengthens the bed rather than widening it, to 84 in |
If you need a bed that is both wider and longer, that is two codes on the order, not one. Tell us the resident's dimensions and the room's, and we will quote the combination rather than leaving you to work it out from a price list.
Which beds this fits
This code is for the Span Advantage Q-Series, the QD1000 and QD1000Y builds. Span's own part description for this code reads "42" DECK WIDTH EXPANDER KIT ADV/REXX", so it covers the Span Rexx as well. The 2026 Savaria range says REXX/ADVANTAGE on the same line, so both sources agree on this one.
It is not the kit for a Span Encore or an Advantage ReadyWide, and those beds do not need it. The ReadyWide platform has expansion built in: a two click system that takes the sleep surface to 39 inches on the first click and 42 inches on the second, with no kit to order and nothing to fit. If someone has quoted you an expander kit for a ReadyWide, that is a line to question.
The bed label identifies the platform. If you cannot find it, call (905) 451-7743 with the model and serial number from the bed label and we will identify it before anything is ordered.
Why a wider bed
Seven extra inches of sleep surface is not a comfort upgrade. It is what makes a bed usable for a resident whose body does not fit a 35 inch deck, and it changes what care in that bed looks like.
- A resident with a wider frame lies centred instead of against a rail
- Repositioning and turning happen inside the bed rather than at its edge
- Contracted or splinted limbs have somewhere to go
- A restless sleeper has room to move without meeting a rail every time
The Advantage keeps everything else it had. It still travels from 7-7/8 inches to 30 inches, still runs 0 to 70 degrees on the back deck and 0 to 30 degrees on the knee deck, still does Comfort Chair and Trendelenburg from the foot end controller, and still moves at any height on its 3 inch total locking casters. Widening the deck does not cost you the low height that made the bed worth choosing.
Two things to sort out before you order
The mattress. A 42 inch deck needs a mattress sized to it. Span is explicit about where the responsibility sits: "Irrespective of the mattress it is the responsibility of the healthcare facility to ensure that the bed meets entrapment guidelines at the time of use and throughout the life cycle of the product." A 35 inch mattress on a 42 inch deck leaves gaps at both sides, which is precisely what the entrapment guidelines exist to prevent. Quote the surface with the kit. Ours are in medical mattresses.
The safe working load does not change. The Advantage is rated at 500 lb (227 kg), and Span states that figure includes the patient, the head and foot panels, the mattress, the side rails and accessories. A wider bed is not a higher capacity bed. If the reason you are widening is the resident's weight rather than their width, that is a different conversation and we would rather have it before the order than after.
Span does not publish the piece count, the installed weight, the overall width of the expanded bed with side rails fitted, or which rails suit a 42 inch deck, and we will not invent them. Call (905) 451-7743 and we will get the current answer from Savaria in writing before the order goes out.

The beds this kit belongs to are the Span Advantage Q-Series and the Span Rexx, with the Span Encore package alongside them, and the full range sits under long term care beds. Service, repairs, and warranty

Span America manufacturer warranty
Span Medical Products Canada warrants beds and accessories against defects in workmanship and materials under normal and proper use from the date of initial delivery. Batteries, hand pendants, foot end controllers and cables carry one year, bed accessories carry one year, and parts subject to wear carry one year. Electrical components, which Span defines as the control box and the actuators, carry five years. The frame and all welds on steel structural components carry fifteen years. Labour for service is not covered by the manufacturer warranty, and warranty claims run through a Span RMA number. We handle the claim with you.
Frequently asked questions
What is the manufacturer code?
Q6709. The SPAN Advantage brochure item code table prints it as "42" Fixed Expander Kit", the 2026 Savaria range prints it as "42" Tool-less deck width expander kit REXX/ADVANTAGE", and Span's own part description reads "42" DECK WIDTH EXPANDER KIT ADV/REXX". Same code, same kit, three ways of saying it.
Is it fixed or is it tool-less?
Both words are Savaria's and they describe different things. "Fixed" is the width: once the kit is on, the deck is 42 inches, unlike a ReadyWide that slides between 35, 39 and 42 inches on its own. "Tool-less" is the fitting: the same Savaria brochure lists "Tool-less bed expanders for 42" width" as a customization and prints "Optional tool-less expansion up to 42"" on its cover. Savaria publishes no step by step installation instruction for this code, so if the install detail matters to you, ask us and we will get it in writing.
How wide is the bed once it is fitted?
The sleep surface becomes 42 inches, up from the standard 35 inches. Span does not publish the overall width of an expanded Advantage with side rails fitted, so we do not quote one. If the room or the doorway is tight, tell us the measurement you have to hit and we will get the figure from Savaria before you order.
Will this fit a ReadyWide or an Encore?
No, and those beds do not need it. The ReadyWide platform expands on its own, two clicks, 39 inches then 42 inches, with no kit and no tools. This kit is for the Advantage QD1000, and Span's own part description extends it to the Rexx.
Do I need a wider mattress?
Yes. A 42 inch deck needs a surface sized to it, and Span states that it is the healthcare facility's responsibility to ensure the bed meets entrapment guidelines at the time of use and throughout the life cycle of the product. Quote the surface with the kit; ours are in medical mattresses.
Does the bed hold more weight once it is wider?
No. The Advantage safe working load is 500 lb (227 kg) and Span states that figure already includes the patient, the head and foot panels, the mattress, the side rails and accessories. Widening the deck does not raise it. If capacity rather than width is the problem, call us and we will look at a different bed.
What about the side rails?
Span publishes no statement about which rails suit a 42 inch deck on this platform, so we will not guess. Bring the rail codes you have or are quoting, call (905) 451-7743, and we will confirm the combination with Savaria before anything ships. Our rail range is in bed rails.
Is there a narrower version?
Yes. Q6633 is the 39 inch expander kit for the same bed, printed in the same Savaria item code table. If 39 inches solves the problem, it is the smaller change to the room.
What is the warranty?
One year. Span puts bed accessories in its one year row rather than in the five year electrical components row, which covers the control box and the actuators. Labour for service is not part of the manufacturer warranty. Our own service and repairs department handles the claim with you.
