Joerns Dolphin Fluid Immersion Simulation System

The Dolphin FIS system is Joerns' fluid-immersion mattress replacement. Westin Healthcare sells the complete kit (mattress plus AutoVector control unit) and delivers it for homes and facilities in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. It is not a low-air-loss mattress and it is not the pediatric kit.

Joerns' AutoVector module measures the person and builds an immersion profile. The 2021 manual says it samples the surface more than 100 times per second. A sealed 12 V battery keeps therapy running for about 12 hours when the bed is moved. Therapy mattress weight is 22 lb. The control unit is 10 lb.

Who this system is for

This system is for a person whose clinician has named fluid immersion simulation: flaps and grafts, Stage 3-4 injuries, or a person who cannot be turned. Joerns also lists spinal cord injury only after the acute injury is stabilised and a physician has cleared it. Stay at or under the spec-sheet capacity for the size you pick.

Size and capacity

Joerns' 2021 therapy spec sheet groups 35 in and 42 in (8 in or 10 in deep) as Standard at 500 lb, and 48 x 82 x 10 in as Bariatric at 1000 lb. The expandable EX mattress is 35 x 80-92 x 8 in at 500 lb, for a bed that lengthens. We do not sell the 35 x 88 in step-deck V-Matt in this list.

Pick 10 in Autovector when the deck can take a 10 in replacement. Pick 8 in low profile when the siderails or low bed need the shorter surface. Pick expandable only when the frame itself extends from 80 to 92 in. The EX mattress has two foot knobs for the length cells. We set those at delivery.

Control unit and battery

The adult AutoVector hangs on the footboard. Joerns' 2021 manual prints 11.5 in W x 12.5 in H x 6 in D. Modes on the panel include Bed vs Chair/Stretcher, Autofirm, Comfort Adjust, and Auto Feedback. The Storage Switch on the underside must be Battery On, or the unit will not charge. Replacement pumps are DLPH-OOOOOODMJ-CU.

Funding help for a therapeutic mattress in Ontario

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) does not fund mattresses or support surfaces. ADP funds, on purchase only, 75% of the approved price of manual and power wheelchairs, approved scooters, seating, and wheeled walkers for adults. OHIP does not reimburse this purchase. Ontario Health atHome (310-2222) and March of Dimes Canada can help some low-income applicants. Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), WSIB, ODSP discretionary benefits, and private insurance are the other common routes. Westin's own team delivers and sets up this mattress across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. We bring it in, place it on the bed, connect a control unit when the order includes one, and check the fit before we leave.

Purchased mattresses are delivered and set up on a scheduled date.

Hospital mattresses are oversized. The Canada-wide free ground-shipping offer on smaller goods does not apply. If the mattress is going outside the GTA, ask us for a freight quote. Joerns manufacturer warranty

Joerns covers the original purchaser for 2 years on the Dolphin FIS surface and 2 years on the electromechanical components. Burns, chemicals, punctures, and use outside the manual sit outside that term.

Frequently asked questions

What is fluid immersion simulation?

Joerns' FIS surface uses the AutoVector to hold the body in a near-neutral buoyant profile, so tissue is not perched on a few high-pressure points. It is Joerns' analogue to floating in a fluid medium. It is not an air-fluidized bead bed.

Does the kit include the control unit?

Yes. These KIT SKUs are mattress plus adult AutoVector. Mattress-only SKUs are listed on the Dolphin FIS mattress page.

What is the weight limit on 42 in?

Joerns' 2021 spec sheet rates 35 in and 42 in at 500 lb and 48 in at 1000 lb. We use those figures, not dealer pages that print 1000 lb on 42 in.

Does ADP cover a Dolphin mattress?

No. Ontario ADP does not fund mattresses or support surfaces. OHIP does not reimburse this purchase.
