Description
The Handicare 1000 straight stairlift is the higher-capacity indoor or outdoor chair in Savaria's Handicare line. Westin Healthcare measures the stairs in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area, then sends a written quote. The Handicare brand is sold in Canada by Savaria. The 1000 is current. It is not a discontinued 950 and it is not the slim 1100.
Savaria rates the Smart seat at 350 lb (159 kg), with an optional 440 lb (200 kg) kit. The Perch seat is 300 lb (136 kg). The rail is anodized aluminum with a hidden gear rack. Folded, the chair sits about 15-1/4 in (38 cm) from the wall. Maximum travel is 32 ft (9.75 m).
Who this stairlift is for
This stairlift is for a household that needs more capacity than the 1100, a perch (semi-standing) seat, a longer straight run, or an outdoor rail in a moderate climate. Families usually call us when the user is over 310 lb, when sitting all the way down is hard on the hips or knees, or when the chair has to live on an outdoor straight flight.
If the stairs are a narrow indoor flight and 310 lb is enough, start with the Handicare 1100. If the stairs turn, see the Handicare Freecurve. A person who stays in a wheelchair needs a vertical platform lift.
- Straight stairs, indoor or outdoor in a moderate climate
- A user at or under 350 lb (159 kg), or 440 lb (200 kg) with the heavy-duty kit
- A perch seat when a full sit is hard, at or under 300 lb (136 kg)
Rail, seats, and outdoor package
The Handicare 1000 is a rack-and-pinion chair on an anodized aluminum rail. The gear rack sits inside the rail, so the stair side stays clean and the rack is sheltered outdoors. Charging is at the top and bottom parks, not along the whole rail. The batteries still give several trips if household power drops.
The Smart seat adjusts for height, arm width, and seat depth. Live Savaria colours are cocoa, sand, and slate. The Perch seat is higher and shallower so the rider travels almost standing. A 5-point harness is available. Power swivel, power footrest, a power hinge at a bottom door, and rail-extension brackets at a top door are quote options. Savaria does not offer those power extras on an outdoor chair.
The outdoor package uses UV-protected plastics, zinc-coated hardware, a weather-resistant slate seat, and a cover. Savaria says outdoor use depends on climate and how close the rail sits to salt water. We confirm that on the measure. Do not assume a salted GTA porch is automatic.
Handicare 1000 specifications
These figures are from Savaria's live Handicare 1000 card and the current 1000 brochure.
Capacity 350 lb (159 kg) Smart seat, 440 lb (200 kg) optional, 300 lb (136 kg) Perch. Fold-up 15-1/4 in (384 mm). Fold-out 25-5/8 in (651 mm). Travel up to 32 ft (9.75 m). Speed 13 ft/min (0.07 m/s). Incline 21 to 56 degrees. Motor 0.6 hp, 24 V DC. Two remotes, keyed switch, retractable seat belt, carpeted or non-skid footrest, obstacle sensors, overspeed governor. Indoor, or outdoor in a moderate climate with the outdoor package. Commercial use is listed as USA only.
How a quote works
The Handicare 1000 is sold as a quote. We measure the flight, pick Smart or Perch, indoor or outdoor, and any power extras, then send a written quote. There is no boxed length on a cart. Call (905) 451-7743 or use the contact page to book the measure.
Straight, curved, or a porch lift
The 1000 and the Handicare 1100 are the two Handicare straight chairs we sell. The 1100 is slimmer and indoor only. The 1000 carries more weight, travels farther, and can go outside. A turn needs the Handicare Freecurve. A wheelchair that stays on its wheels needs the Serenity Standard Vertical Platform Lift.
Funding help for a stairlift or home accessibility in Ontario
Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) does not fund stairlifts, platform lifts, or home modifications, so plan around other routes. The March of Dimes Canada Home and Vehicle Modification Program is the main Ontario funding source for home accessibility changes like stairlifts and platform lifts, and Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), the Ontario Renovates program in some municipalities, extended health plans, and community organizations can also help. The Home Accessibility Tax Credit may apply to qualifying renovations on a Canadian tax return. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through.
Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA
Westin's own team measures, delivers, and installs the Handicare 1000 across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. We fix the rail to the treads, run the chair, and show you the toggle, remotes, and swivel before we leave.
We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather sit in a Smart or Perch seat first. For a scheduled measure, call (905) 451-7743. A purchased stairlift is installed on a scheduled date after the quote.
A stairlift rail is oversized. The Canada-wide free ground-shipping offer on smaller goods does not apply. If the chair is going outside the GTA, ask us for a freight quote. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery (bring-in, unwrap, test, take packaging away) is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.

Frequently asked questions
Is The Handicare 1000 Still Sold In Canada?
Yes. Savaria still sells the Handicare 1000 on savaria.com as the high-capacity and outdoor straight chair. It has not been replaced by the 1100. The older Handicare 950 is the model Savaria no longer lists.
How Much Does A Stairlift Cost In Ontario?
A Handicare 1000 is quoted after a home measure. Capacity kit, perch seat, outdoor package, and power extras change the figure. Call (905) 451-7743 for a written quote. The 1000 is sold as a quote, not a printed price.
Does ADP Cover Stairlifts In Ontario?
Funding for a Handicare 1000 in Ontario depends on the person's situation and assessment. Westin Healthcare works with the programs that may apply. Visit the funding page or call (905) 451-7743 before you buy.
What Is The Weight Capacity?
Savaria rates the Handicare 1000 Smart seat at 350 lb (159 kg), or 440 lb (200 kg) with the heavy-duty kit. The Perch seat is 300 lb (136 kg).
What Is A Perch Seat?
On the Handicare 1000, the Perch seat is a higher, shallower seat so the rider travels almost standing. Savaria names it for people who find a full sit hard, and for some narrow flights. The perch rating is 300 lb (136 kg).
Can The 1000 Go Outdoors?
Savaria offers an outdoor package for the Handicare 1000 in moderate climates: UV plastics, zinc hardware, a slate seat, and a cover. Outdoor use depends on climate and salt. We confirm that on the measure. Power extras are not offered on an outdoor chair.
What Is The Difference Between The 1000 And The 1100?
The Handicare 1000 is the hidden-rack chair, 350 lb (440 lb optional), 32 ft max, perch seat, outdoor package. The Handicare 1100 is the slim indoor friction-drive chair, 310 lb, 23 ft max, with Slide Track and Easy Hinge options.
Does It Work During A Power Cut?
Yes. The Handicare 1000 runs on batteries that charge at the top and bottom parks. Savaria says the batteries provide several up and down trips if the power fails.
Can I Install The Stairlift Myself?
No. Savaria requires an authorized dealer to install and service a Handicare 1000. Westin Healthcare does that install in the GTA.
What Warranty Does It Carry?
Savaria covers Handicare 1000 parts for 24 months. The motor and gearbox are covered for 10 years on an indoor install and 5 years on an outdoor install. Westin Healthcare handles the claim with you.
