Description

The SPAN PressureGuard Bariatric APM is Span America's powered alternating-pressure mattress for bariatric widths. Span America is a Savaria company. Westin Healthcare quotes it, delivers it, and sets it on the bed for homes and care settings in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area.

This listing is the Bariatric APM only: a 7-inch air-and-foam surface in 42, 48, or 54 inch widths, 80 or 84 inches long, rated 120 to 750 lb, with the 7510 digital control unit. It is not the standard 35-inch PressureGuard APM. The bed frame is sold separately.

Who this mattress is for

This mattress is for a person whose therapist has asked for a bariatric alternating-pressure surface, or whose body weight and bed width sit above a standard 35-inch, 350 lb PressureGuard APM. Families usually pair a 42-inch Bariatric APM with a 42-inch bariatric or expanded Span deck, a 48-inch size with a 48-inch deck, and a 54-inch size with a 54-inch deck.

Choose this surface when the care plan names powered alternating pressure, a Geo-Matt top, a Safety-Edge, and a 750 lb rating on a wide deck. If the therapist named a still foam bariatric mattress instead, see the SPAN Geo-Mattress Atlas. If they named the standard-width PressureGuard APM, APM-i, APM2, Protocol, or a Custom Care / Easy Air model, that is a different listing.

  • Home care or long-term care on a 42, 48, or 54 inch sleep deck
  • Anyone who needs 120 to 750 lb on a powered alternating-pressure mattress
  • A care plan that asked for Alternate, Float, or Auto Firm on the Span 7510 control unit

Construction and how it works

The Bariatric APM is an air-and-foam mattress. On top, the Geo-Matt design uses more than 800 independent cells, about 2 inches thick, so the surface can reduce friction and shear next to the skin and help move heat and moisture away from the body. At the foot, Heel Slope tapers the foam so more of the load sits on the lower leg and less sits on the heel. Under that top, air cylinders run head to foot inside a foam shell. Two-part Safety-Edge bolsters sit along the sides to add stability when the person sits or transfers, and to encourage them toward the centre of the bed.

The 7510 control unit hangs on the footboard and connects to the air lines at the foot end. In Alternate mode it inflates and deflates the cylinders in a repeating A-B-C sequence, described by Span as two up, one down, so support stays under the person while the load shifts. You can set the cycle to 20, 25, or 30 minutes and choose one of ten comfort settings. Float holds an even powered immersion. Auto Firm runs for 20 minutes, then returns to the last setting. A lockout stops casual button changes. Low-pressure and power-failure lights and an audible alarm are on the unit.

If power is cut, or you need to move the bed, disconnect the air lines so the mattress can reset to its non-powered inflation. Span writes the surface for prevention and treatment of pressure injuries, including aggressive treatment through Stage 4, for people who are immobile or at high risk, who cannot or will not reposition often, or who can be positioned off a pressure injury. That is Span's indication language, not a promise that a wound will heal.

SPAN PressureGuard Bariatric APM specifications

These figures are for the Bariatric APM APxxxx-29 family with the 7510. They are not the standard 35-inch APM figures. The specification tab holds the stored values.

Height is 7 inches. Average mattress weight is about 25 lb. Weight capacity is 120 to 750 lb on every size. The 7510 is rated 110-120 V AC, 60 Hz, 0.17 A, Class II, Type BF, and is listed to UL 60601-1 and CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 601.1. Warranty is 3 years on the mattress, 2 years on the cover, and 18 months on the control unit, not prorated. Fire-barrier builds (the -29 suffix) meet NFPA 101, Cal TB 117, and 16 CFR 1632 and 1633.

The cover is bacteriostatic, fluid-proof, flame-resistant, tear-resistant, and replaceable. The green fabric faces up. The gray vinyl faces the deck. Wipe the cover with neutral soap and lukewarm water, rinse, and let it dry. A hospital-grade phenolic or quaternary disinfectant is the cleaner Span names. Unplug the 7510 before you wipe it with a well-wrung cloth. Do not puncture the mattress.

Size

Use Size to pick the Span SKU. Match the mattress width to the sleep deck, and the length to the deck length. Every size includes the 7510 control unit.

  • 80 x 42 in (AP8042-29), 120 to 750 lb
  • 80 x 48 in (AP8048-29), 120 to 750 lb
  • 80 x 54 in (AP8054-29), 120 to 750 lb
  • 84 x 42 in (AP8442-29), 120 to 750 lb
  • 84 x 48 in (AP8448-29), 120 to 750 lb
  • 84 x 54 in (AP8454-29), 120 to 750 lb

There is no 35-inch or 36-inch Bariatric APM. The default on this page is 80 x 42 in (AP8042-29). A spare 7510 is available if the original pump later needs a replacement. If the care team named the standard-width APM, we quote that listing instead.

Funding help for a therapeutic mattress in Ontario

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) does not cover hospital beds or mattresses, so plan around other routes. Funding that may help instead: March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through before you buy.

Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA

Westin's own team delivers and sets up this mattress across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. We bring it in, place it on the bed, hang the control unit, and check the air before we leave.

We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a mattress first. For a scheduled in-home setup, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works. Same-day delivery is offered through our hospital bed rental service; purchased mattresses are delivered and set up on a scheduled date.

Hospital mattresses are oversized. The Canada-wide free ground-shipping offer on smaller goods does not apply. If the mattress is going outside the GTA, ask us for a freight quote. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery (bring-in, unwrap, test, take packaging away) is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.

Which Westin beds this mattress fits

Span writes that the Bariatric APM can sit on a hospital-bed frame, a standard bed frame, or a box spring. Confirm the mattress fits the frame and keep gaps small. Match width to width and length to length. This surface starts at 42 inches. It does not fit a 35 or 36 inch homecare deck.

A 42-inch Bariatric APM (AP8042-29 or AP8442-29) is the size for a 42-inch expanded Span deck, including the Span ReadyWide we stock when that frame is opened to 42 inches, and the 42-inch setting on the Span America Encore. It also fits the Drive 15300LW 42-inch bariatric bed. A 48-inch size fits the Drive 15302LW 48-inch bariatric bed. A 54-inch size fits the Drive 15303LW 54-inch bariatric bed.

Check both the mattress rating and the bed safe working load before we book delivery. The mattress is 750 lb. ReadyWide is 500 or 650 lb by model. The Encore is 600 lb. The lower of the two ratings is the one that counts. If the care plan wants foam at the same bariatric widths instead of a pump, start with the SPAN Geo-Mattress Atlas. See all hospital beds if you are still choosing a platform.

The 7510 needs a working wall outlet. Span rates it at 110-120 V AC, 60 Hz, 0.17 A. Hang it on the footboard with the hanger, or set it on a stable surface a caregiver can reach. Plug the supplied cord straight into the wall. Span says not to use an extension cord or a multiple-outlet strip. Route the cord and the air lines at the foot of the bed, clear of moving parts and walkways. Switch the unit on, then press the power button. The system runs Auto Firm while it checks itself, then returns to the last comfort and therapy setting.

Related Span surfaces we already stock include PressureGuard Custom Care Convertible LAL, non-powered Custom Care, and Span-Care Convertible. Ask us to quote the named model if the therapist wrote one of those instead of Bariatric APM. See all medical mattresses if you are still choosing the surface.

Service and warranty

When something on the mattress or the control unit needs work, you call the shop that delivered it, not a US parts desk. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department. Our technicians come to the home or workplace.

Span America manufacturer warranty

Span lists 3 years on the mattress, 2 years on the cover, and 18 months on the control unit, not prorated, for the original purchaser. We handle the claim with you.

Frequently asked questions

How is the Bariatric APM different from the standard PressureGuard APM?

This page is the Bariatric APM only. It is 42, 48, or 54 inches wide, rated 120 to 750 lb, and uses the 7510 digital control unit with 20, 25, or 30 minute cycles. The standard PressureGuard APM is a 35-inch, 350 lb surface with the analog 5500 pump. If the therapist named the standard APM, we quote that listing.

How is this different from the Geo-Mattress Atlas?

Atlas is foam. The surface stays still. There is no pump. The Bariatric APM is a powered air-and-foam mattress with the 7510. If the care plan asked for a still foam bariatric mattress, see the SPAN Geo-Mattress Atlas.

What is the weight rating?

Span lists 120 to 750 lb on every Bariatric APM size. We still check the bed's safe working load. A 750 lb mattress on a 500 lb or 600 lb frame is limited by the lower of the two ratings.

What size do I need?

Match the mattress to the sleep deck. 42-inch deck, AP8042-29 or AP8442-29. 48-inch deck, AP8048-29 or AP8448-29. 54-inch deck, AP8054-29 or AP8454-29. Length is 80 or 84 inches. There is no 35-inch or 36-inch size on this page. Measure the deck before we quote.

Which beds does the Bariatric APM fit?

Span states it can sit on a hospital-bed frame, a standard bed frame, or a box spring. We commonly set a 42-inch size on a 42-inch ReadyWide or Encore deck, or on the Drive 15300LW. 48-inch and 54-inch sizes need those matching Drive bariatric decks. Confirm the open deck width before we cut the order.

What power does the 7510 need?

Span rates the 7510 at 110-120 V AC, 60 Hz, 0.17 A. Plug the supplied cord into a wall outlet. Do not use an extension cord or a power bar. Hang the unit on the footboard and keep the cord and air lines clear of moving bed parts.

How loud is the control unit?

The 7510 is a powered pump at the footboard. You will hear air moving as the cylinders cycle. Span does not publish a decibel rating. If the sound changes, a light comes on, or the alarm sounds, call us and we will check it.

How do I clean the cover?

Span says to wipe with neutral soap and lukewarm water, rinse, and let the cover dry. Use a hospital-grade phenolic or quaternary disinfectant if you need to disinfect. Unplug the 7510 before you wipe it. Iodophor cleaners can stain the fabric. Do not puncture the mattress.

What is the warranty on the PressureGuard Bariatric APM?

Span lists 3 years on the mattress, 2 years on the cover, and 18 months on the control unit, not prorated, for the original purchaser. Westin Healthcare processes the warranty work on our service and repairs page.

Can funding help pay for this mattress in Ontario?

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program does not cover mattresses. March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada, and community programs may still help, depending on the person. Call (905) 451-7743 and we will point you to the right route before anyone starts paperwork.

Can I rent a mattress like this before I buy?

Westin Healthcare rents hospital beds with a therapeutic medical mattress included. A SPAN PressureGuard Bariatric APM is not automatically that included surface. Bariatric widths are a special order. Call (905) 451-7743 and we will tell you what we can put in the home this week.

Who should not use this mattress?

Span does not recommend it when turning is ruled out, including an unstable spinal cord injury, an unstable fracture that must stay still, a physician order that prohibits turning, or a severe burn on the back that needs a graft. Ask the therapist before we quote if any of those apply.
