Description

The Span America PressureGuard APM2 is a powered convertible air therapy mattress. Span America is a Savaria company. Westin Healthcare quotes it, delivers it, and sets it on the bed for hospitals, long-term care homes, and families in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area whose therapist has named this surface.

This page is the standard PressureGuard APM2 only. It is a 7 inch air-and-foam mattress in 35 inch width, rated at 350 lb, with a quiet 5900 digital control unit. A recessed toggle on the mattress chooses alternating pressure or basic lateral rotation. The control unit adds powered flotation (Float) and a timed Auto Firm mode. The default on this page is 80 x 35 x 7 inches (5880LR-29). If the care team named PressureGuard APM2 Safety Supreme, that is a separate mattress with raised sides. If they named the base APM, APM-i, Bariatric APM, Custom Care Convertible, or Protocol, ask us for that model.

Who this mattress is for

This mattress is for a person on a 35 inch healthcare sleep deck whose weight is within Span's 350 lb rating, and whose care plan names the PressureGuard APM2 or a convertible surface that can switch between alternating pressure and lateral rotation. Span writes it as a powered flotation therapy mattress for the prevention and treatment of pressure injuries. Lateral rotation is written as a preventive tool against further complications associated with critically ill patients or immobility. It does not replace manual repositioning.

Families and directors of care usually call us when the therapist has asked for air therapy on a 35 inch long-term care deck, not a foam-only surface and not a raised-edge Safety Supreme. The 80 inch APM2 is the size for a 35 by 80 inch deck such as the Span America Advantage. The Span America Encore expands from 36 to 42 inches, so we size a different Span surface for that platform. A standard homecare deck such as the Drive Delta 1000 is 36 inches wide; Span says to match mattress width to the frame, so we confirm the deck before we write the quote.

  • 35 inch healthcare decks in 75, 80, or 84 inch length
  • Home care and long-term care rooms that need alternating pressure or lateral rotation on one surface
  • Anyone whose therapist named the standard PressureGuard APM2 rather than Safety Supreme or another PressureGuard

Construction and how it works

The PressureGuard APM2 is a mattress replacement, not an overlay. Span builds a foam shell around four air cylinders that run head to foot. The Geo-Matt top is a high-density foam layer about 2 inches thick, cut into more than 800 cells so each cell can follow the person. Heel Slope tapers the foot end. Safety Edge inner and outer foam bolsters sit at a uniform 7 inch height and give a stable edge for sitting and transfers. That Safety Edge is part of the standard APM2. It is not the raised 9 inch perimeter on Safety Supreme.

The cover is Span's LifeSpan stretch fabric with Shear Transfer Zones: silicone-coated bands on the underside that help heels, sacrum, and scapula sit without digging in, and help the person glide back after the head of the bed is raised. The cover zips off for replacement and wipes clean in place. Span does not make this mattress with natural rubber latex.

The 5900 control unit hangs on the footboard. Quick-connect air lines click into ports under a flap at the foot-right corner. On first power-up the unit runs Auto Firm while it fills. Alternate mode changes loading in a 10-minute cycle. A recessed toggle under a flap at the foot of the mattress chooses alternating pressure or lateral rotation (about 20 degrees) without swapping hoses. Float holds all four cylinders evenly inflated. Auto Firm firms the surface for 20 minutes for transfers, dressing, or CPR, then returns to the previous comfort setting and Alternate.

Span America PressureGuard APM2 specifications

These figures are for the standard PressureGuard APM2 in 5875LR-29, 5880LR-29, and 5884LR-29. They are not the Safety Supreme, base APM, APM-i, or Bariatric APM sheets. The specification tab holds the stored values.

Wipe the cover with neutral suds and lukewarm water. Let it air-dry for 20 to 30 minutes. Phenolic or quaternary hospital-grade (tuberculocidal) disinfectants are the cleaners Span names. Unplug the control unit before you wipe it with a well-wrung cloth. Use as few layers of linen or underpads as possible. Fitted, stretch, or deep-pocket sheets are the linens Span names.

Choose Mattress Size

Use Choose Mattress Size to set the Span SKU. Every row is 35 inches wide and 7 inches high and includes the 5900 control unit. The default on this page is 80 in L x 35 in W x 7 in H (5880LR-29).

  • 75 in L x 35 in W x 7 in H (5875LR-29)
  • 80 in L x 35 in W x 7 in H (5880LR-29)
  • 84 in L x 35 in W x 7 in H (5884LR-29)

Span publishes the standard APM2 in 35 inch width only on this card. If the care team named Safety Supreme with raised sides, ask us for that mattress. If the deck is 39 or 42 inches, or a consumer Full, Queen, or Dual King, ask us about the extra-wide and in-home APM2 family rather than stretching a 35 inch surface.

Funding help for a therapeutic mattress in Ontario

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) does not cover hospital beds or mattresses, so plan around other routes. Funding that may help instead: March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through before you buy.

Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA

Westin's own team delivers and sets up this mattress across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. We bring it in, place it on the bed, hang the control unit, and check the air before we leave.

We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a mattress first. For a scheduled in-home setup, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works. Same-day delivery is offered through our hospital bed rental service; purchased mattresses are delivered and set up on a scheduled date.

Hospital mattresses are oversized. The Canada-wide free ground-shipping offer on smaller goods does not apply. If the mattress is going outside the GTA, ask us for a freight quote. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery (bring-in, unwrap, test, take packaging away) is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.

Which beds this mattress fits

Span publishes the standard PressureGuard APM2 in 35 inch width by 75, 80, or 84 inch length and 7 inch height. Span says to place it directly on a healthcare bed frame, never on another mattress, and to match length and width so gaps stay small. The green side faces up. The printed feet face the foot of the bed.

The 80 inch APM2 (5880LR-29) is the size for the Span America Advantage 35 by 80 inch deck. The 75 inch APM2 is for a 35 by 75 inch deck. The 84 inch APM2 is for a 35 by 84 inch deck. The Span America Encore expands from 36 to 42 inches, so we size a different Span surface for that platform. The Drive Delta 1000 sleep deck is 36 by 80 inches. We confirm the deck width before we write a 35 inch APM2 onto a 36 inch frame. See all hospital beds if you are still choosing a frame, and all medical mattresses if you need a different therapy class.

The 5900 control unit needs a working wall outlet. Span rates the North American unit at 100-120 VAC, 60 Hz, 0.17 A operating and 1.0 A maximum. Hang it on the footboard with the fold-out hangers. Route the air lines and the power cord at the foot of the bed, clear of moving parts and walkways. Plug the supplied cord into the wall, then switch the unit on. On first start it runs Auto Firm while it fills. Indoor use only. Keep the unit away from water.

Related surfaces we already sell: PressureGuard Custom Care Convertible LAL, non-powered Custom Care, and Span-Care Convertible if the therapist named a convertible PressureGuard without this APM2 toggle. For a simpler foam mattress see the Gravity 9. For a non-powered air-and-foam mattress that can take a pump later, see the Drive Balanced Aire NP. For another alternating-pressure system we already list, see the Fusion APT.

Service and warranty

When something on the mattress or the control unit needs work, you call the shop that delivered it, not a US parts desk. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department. Our technicians come to the home or workplace.

Span America manufacturer warranty

Span America's published warranty for the original purchaser is 3 years on the mattress core, 2 years on the cover, and 18 months on the 5900 control unit, not pro-rated. We handle the warranty claim with you. Ask us if an extended warranty is offered for your order.

Frequently asked questions

What is the PressureGuard APM2?

It is Span America's standard convertible air therapy mattress in 35 inch width. A 5900 control unit and a mattress toggle let you use alternating pressure, basic lateral rotation, powered flotation, or a timed Auto Firm mode. Span rates it at 350 lb and 7 inches high, in 75, 80, or 84 inch lengths.

How is the standard APM2 different from APM2 Safety Supreme?

Both share the same air therapies and the 5900 control unit. The standard APM2 has a uniform 7 inch height, LifeSpan stretch cover, and Shear Transfer Zones. Safety Supreme is a separate mattress with raised sides (7 inches at the centre, 9 inches at the sides) and a non-stretch nylon cover. If the care team named Safety Supreme, ask us for that card.

How is APM2 different from the base PressureGuard APM?

The base APM is alternating pressure and float on an older control unit. APM2 adds lateral rotation at a mattress toggle, the digital 5900, Auto Firm, and the current LifeSpan cover. APM-i, Bariatric APM, Custom Care Convertible, and Protocol are different PressureGuard models. Ask us if the care team named one of those.

Does this mattress need a pump, and what power does it use?

Yes. The 5900 control unit hangs on the footboard and plugs into a wall outlet. Span rates the North American unit at 100-120 VAC, 60 Hz, 0.17 A operating and 1.0 A maximum, and describes it as lightweight and quiet. Indoor use only. Keep the cord and air lines clear of moving bed parts.

What size fits a standard hospital bed?

This card is 35 inches wide. The 80 inch length (5880LR-29) matches a 35 by 80 inch deck such as the Span America Advantage. A 36 inch homecare deck is a different width. We measure the frame before we quote.

What is the weight rating?

Span lists a 350 lb weight limit on the standard APM2. Tell us the person's weight when you order. For a higher rating, ask us about Bariatric APM or another Span surface.

How do I clean the cover?

Wipe it in place with neutral suds and lukewarm water, then let it air-dry for 20 to 30 minutes. Phenolic or quaternary hospital-grade disinfectants are the cleaners Span names. Unplug the control unit before you wipe it. Do not puncture the mattress with needles or sharp instruments.

Can I raise the head of the bed?

Span writes that pressure management is strongest between flat and 30 degrees. The surface still supports the person up to 70 degrees. Do not use lateral rotation with the head of the bed above 30 degrees. Switch to alternating pressure or Float instead.

Who should not use lateral rotation on this mattress?

Span does not recommend rotation or turning when that motion is contraindicated, including unstable spinal cord injury, unstable skeletal fractures that need immobilization or traction, a physician order that prohibits rotation, or severe posterior burns that need skin grafts.

What is the warranty on the PressureGuard APM2?

Span lists 3 years on the mattress core, 2 years on the cover, and 18 months on the control unit, not pro-rated, for the original purchaser. Westin Healthcare processes the warranty work on our service and repairs page.

Can funding help pay for this mattress in Ontario?

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program does not cover hospital beds or mattresses. March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada, and community programs may still help. Call (905) 451-7743 and we will point you to the right route before anyone starts paperwork.

What is included?
