Description

The Span America PressureGuard APM-i is a powered air-and-foam treatment mattress. The 6200 control unit runs SmartImmerse: it reads the person on the surface and sets the air profile on its own. Span America is a Savaria company. Westin Healthcare quotes it, delivers it, and sets it on the bed for homes and care sites in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area.

This page is the PressureGuard APM-i only. Span lists a 350 lb weight limit, a 7 inch height, and an approximate 20 lb mattress weight. Official sizes are 80 or 84 inches long by 36 or 42 inches wide. The default on this page is 80 x 36 in with 6200 (38036). If a clinician has named the PressureGuard APM, APM2, APM2 Safety Supreme, Bariatric APM, Custom Care Convertible, or Protocol, ask us for that surface. Those are separate Span mattresses.

Who this mattress is for

This mattress is for a person whose care plan names the PressureGuard APM-i, or who needs a powered air surface that configures itself, and whose weight is within Span's 350 lb rating. Span writes it for prevention of pressure injuries in someone who is immobile or at high risk, and for aggressive treatment through Stage 4 when the person can be positioned off the injury. It is also written for someone who cannot or will not reposition often.

The 36 inch size sits on a 36 inch hospital deck such as the Drive Delta 1000. The 36 and 42 inch sizes match those sleep widths on the Span America Encore. A 42 inch APM-i is the size for a 42 inch deck such as the Drive 15300LW.

We already stock Span PressureGuard Custom Care Convertible LAL, non-powered Custom Care, and Span-Care Convertible. Ask us to quote the named model if the therapist did not ask for the APM-i. For another alternating-pressure surface we already sell, see the Fusion APT or the Med-Aire alternating pressure mattress.

  • Long-term care, hospital, or a private home when the therapist named the PressureGuard APM-i
  • A 36 or 42 inch healthcare deck, 80 or 84 inches long, that needs a self-configuring air mattress
  • A person within 350 lb who needs immersion, alternating pressure, or basic lateral rotation on one surface

Construction and how it works

The APM-i is a foam shell with four air cylinders that run head to foot. A Geo-Matt segmented top sits over the cylinders. Span cuts that top into more than 800 cells so each cell can follow the person, cut shear, and let heat and moisture leave the skin. A high-immersion foam layer sits between the Geo-Matt and the cylinders. Safety Edge bolsters run the sides. Heel Slope tapers the foot.

The cover is Span's LifeSpan stretch fabric with Shear Transfer Zones on the underside. Those silicone-coated bands sit under the heels, sacrum, and scapula so the person is less likely to dig into the surface, and they help the person glide back after the head of the bed is raised. The cover is bacteriostatic, flame resistant, fluid-proof, and tear resistant. Wipe it in place with neutral soap and lukewarm water, rinse, and let it air-dry for 20 to 30 minutes. Phenolic or quaternary hospital-grade disinfectants are the cleaners Span names.

Hang the 6200 on the footboard. Click the air lines into the unit and into the ports under the flap at the foot, on the person's right. Plug the supplied cord into a grounded wall outlet. When you switch the unit on, it runs a system check. SmartImmerse then enters Sense: it fills and releases air until the profile matches the person on the mattress. Ready lights stay on when that step is done. You can press Sense again if you want it to recalibrate. Comfort can move one step firmer or softer from that setting.

On the 6200, choose Immersion, Alternate, or Auto Firm. Immersion keeps all four cylinders equally inflated and keeps adjusting as the person moves. Alternate changes loading across the surface on a 10-minute cycle. A toggle under the flap at the foot sets that cycle to alternating pressure or to lateral rotation of about 20 degrees. Auto Firm holds a firm surface for 20 minutes for a transfer, daily care, or CPR, then returns to the last mode.

Span America PressureGuard APM-i specifications

These figures are for the PressureGuard APM-i in 38036, 38436, 38042, and 38442 with the 6200 control unit. They are not the APM, APM2, Bariatric APM, Custom Care, or Protocol sheets. The specification tab holds the stored values.

Span lists a 350 lb weight limit, a 7 inch height, and an approximate 20 lb mattress weight. The 6200 is listed at 6.3 lb and 12 by 7.5 by 5 inches. Power is 120 VAC at 60 Hz, 1 A maximum. Hang the unit on the footboard and plug it into a grounded wall outlet. Span lists NFPA 101, Cal TB 117, ASTM E1590, and 16 CFR 1632 and 1633, plus UL 60601-1 and CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 601.1 for Canada. Warranty is 3 years on the mattress, 2 years on the cover, and 18 months on the control unit, not prorated.

Size options

Use Choose Mattress Size. Every row includes the 6200 control unit. The default on this page is 80 x 36 in with 6200 (38036).

  • 80 x 36 in with 6200 (38036)
  • 84 x 36 in with 6200 (38436)
  • 80 x 42 in with 6200 (38042)
  • 84 x 42 in with 6200 (38442)

Match length and width to the sleep deck, not to the outside of the bed frame. A spare 6200 is available if the original pump later needs a replacement. If the care team named the base APM, APM2, Bariatric APM, Custom Care Convertible, or Protocol, ask us for that surface instead of picking a size here.

Funding help for a therapeutic mattress in Ontario

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) does not cover hospital beds or mattresses, so plan around other routes. Funding that may help instead: March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through before you buy.

Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA

Westin's own team delivers and sets up this mattress across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. We bring it in, place it on the bed, hang the 6200, and show you Sense, the modes, and the cover before we leave.

We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a mattress first. For a scheduled in-home setup, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works. Same-day delivery is offered through our hospital bed rental service; purchased mattresses are delivered and set up on a scheduled date.

Hospital mattresses are oversized. The Canada-wide free ground-shipping offer on smaller goods does not apply. If the mattress is going outside the GTA, ask us for a freight quote. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery (bring-in, unwrap, test, take packaging away) is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.

Which beds this mattress fits

Span publishes the APM-i in 36 or 42 inch width by 80 or 84 inch length by 7 inch height. Place it directly on a healthcare bed frame of that size. Span writes that it must not sit on another mattress, and that gaps between the mattress and the frame should stay small.

A 36 x 80 APM-i (38036) is the usual size for a standard 36 x 80 homecare deck such as the Drive Delta 1000. The Span America Encore sleep surface is 36, 39, or 42 inches wide and 76, 80, or 84 inches long, so we match a 36 or 42 inch APM-i to the 36 or 42 inch Encore widths and use 80 or 84 inch length when the Encore is on those lengths. A 42 inch APM-i is the size for a 42 inch deck such as the Drive 15300LW. We confirm the deck width and length before we write the quote.

The 6200 needs a working grounded wall outlet. Span rates it at 120 VAC, 60 Hz, and 1 A maximum. Hang it on the footboard. On a thin homecare footboard, Span's hanger lock strip holds the hooks snug. Route the air lines and the power cord at the foot of the bed, clear of moving parts and walkways. Plug the supplied cord into the wall. Ready lights stay on when SmartImmerse has finished Sense. If power fails, Span's transport cap seals the air lines so the four cylinders share air as a still surface until power returns.

Related surfaces we already sell: PressureGuard Custom Care Convertible LAL, non-powered Custom Care, and Span-Care Convertible if the therapist named a different PressureGuard; the Fusion APT and the Med-Aire alternating pressure mattress if the plan is a different air system. See all medical mattresses if you are still choosing a surface, and all hospital beds if you are still choosing a frame.

Frequently asked questions

What is the PressureGuard APM-i?

It is Span America's powered air-and-foam treatment mattress with the 6200 control unit and SmartImmerse. The unit reads the person on the surface and sets the air profile. You then choose immersion, alternating pressure, or lateral rotation. Span lists a 350 lb weight limit and four sizes: 80 or 84 by 36 or 42 inches.

How is SmartImmerse different from the base PressureGuard APM?

The APM-i 6200 auto-configures inflation for each user. The base APM uses a 5500 unit with a comfort dial and an 8-minute alternate or float cycle. It does not run SmartImmerse and it does not offer lateral rotation. The APM-i also adds a 20-minute Auto Firm mode. If the care team named APM without the i, ask us for that mattress.

How is the APM-i different from APM2, Bariatric APM, Custom Care Convertible, and Protocol?

APM2 uses a 5900 unit and a mattress toggle for alternating pressure or lateral rotation, without SmartImmerse, in 35 inch widths. APM2 Safety Supreme adds a raised perimeter. Bariatric APM is the 750 lb, 42 to 54 inch family. Custom Care Convertible starts as a non-powered surface and takes an add-on pump. Protocol is the microclimate coverlet model. This page is the APM-i only.

What power does the APM-i need?

The 6200 uses 120 VAC at 60 Hz, 1 A maximum. Hang it on the footboard and plug the supplied cord into a grounded wall outlet. Keep the cord and air lines clear of moving bed parts. Span writes to avoid an extension cord when a wall outlet will reach.

Which beds does the APM-i fit?

It fits a healthcare deck that matches 80 or 84 by 36 or 42 inches. The 80 by 36 size is the usual fit for a 36 x 80 deck such as the Drive Delta 1000. Span says to place it on the frame only, never on another mattress, and to keep gaps small.

What is the weight rating?

Span lists a 350 lb weight limit on every APM-i size. Tell us the person's weight when you order. For a higher rating, ask us about Bariatric APM or another Span surface.

How do I clean the cover?

Wipe it in place with neutral soap and lukewarm water, rinse, and let it air-dry for 20 to 30 minutes. Phenolic or quaternary hospital-grade disinfectants are the cleaners Span names. Unplug the 6200 before you wipe it with a well-wrung cloth. Do not soak the pump.

How loud is the 6200, and what will the person feel?

The 6200 is a compact digital unit at the footboard. In Alternate mode the cylinders change loading every few minutes on a 10-minute cycle. Span writes that some air stays in the lower cylinders so the person is not dropped into a hole. If the sound changes or the unit vibrates, call us and we will check it.

What happens if the power goes out?

Fit Span's transport cap on the quick connector so the air stays in the mattress. The four cylinders then share air as a still surface until power returns. Span writes not to move the person on the mattress alone.

What is the warranty?

Span lists 3 years on the mattress, 2 years on the cover, and 18 months on the 6200, not prorated. Westin Healthcare processes the warranty work on our service and repairs page.

Can funding help pay for this mattress in Ontario?

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program does not cover hospital beds or mattresses. March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada, and community programs may still help, depending on the person. Call (905) 451-7743 or use the funding page before you buy.

What is included?
