The Handicare Bure XL Stand Tall Walker is Handicare's SystemRoMedic heavy duty electric stand tall walker, base article 56-315, rated 240 kg (529 lb). Westin Healthcare delivers it and sets it up across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area.

It is the only walker in the Bure range that clears 150 kg, and the way it gets there is not marketing. Handicare reinforced the frame and widened it: 890 mm (35.0 in) across, with 44 to 62 cm (17.3 to 24.4 in) of clear space between the armrests. Handicare's own note on the extra leg room is that it particularly suits users who need more walking space because of, for example, leg spasms.

The two questions to settle first

Both are about space, and both are easier to answer before the order than after.

1. The frame does not widen

This is the trade-off for the rating, and it is the single most important difference between the XL and its siblings. The Bure Double 2.0 and the Bure Rise & Go DB both have a second motor that opens and closes the frame from 64 cm out to 95 cm or more, so they narrow for a doorway and open around a wheelchair. The XL is fixed at 890 mm.

What that means in a building: 890 mm through every doorway on the route, and a turning diameter of 1212 mm (47.7 in) at every corner. Handicare states plainly that because of its size, the Bure XL is best suited to hospitals and nursing homes. It can work in a home, but the home has to suit it.

2. It takes a different platform

The Bure XL does not take the 56-383-DB transfer plate. That platform fits the Bure Double 2.0 and the Bure Rise & Go DB, and it is being listed on our site at the same time as this walker, which is exactly why this needs saying out loud.

The XL's platform is 56-386, Platform XL, a different part sized to the wider frame. It is not on our catalogue yet, so call (905) 451-7743 and we will bring in the right one with the walker.

Who this walker is for

Handicare's intended-use statement covers the Bure range, and it is the condition that decides whether the machine suits a person:

Walkers are to be used by persons with reduced muscular strength, who shall be able to stand and perform simple leg movements. Walkers are to be used for leaning on when walking and standing during early mobilisation training.

The XL adds capacity, not capability. It supports a heavier user through the same task the other Bure walkers do: standing up, staying up, and walking with the forearms taking the load. Somebody who cannot take steps once upright needs a different machine, whatever they weigh, and our staff will work through that with you.

Bure walkers are for indoor use only, in home healthcare and professional healthcare environments.

What is on it

• Stepless powered height adjustment. The forearm support height, and with it the walker's total height, runs from 910 mm to 1310 mm (35.8 to 51.6 in) on the 125 mm castor build. Handicare always supplies the XL with electric drives; there is no manual or gas version of this model.
• Ergonomic handles adjustable in every direction, so a user with a stiff or weak side is set up rather than compensated for.
• An open frame design, which Handicare describes as giving the same stability with greater room to manoeuvre.
• A Linak drive train. Motor DC 24 V at 4.3 A, 2000 N push, 400 mm stroke; control box Linak 230 V to 24 V, Class II double insulated; battery 24 V, 1.2 Ah valve-regulated sealed gel. Worth knowing: the XL is the only Bure in this range on Linak rather than TiMOTION, so its spare parts are not shared with the Double 2.0 or the Rise & Go.
• 125 mm (4.9 in) castors. Handicare also builds the XL on 100 mm and 75 mm castors, and the smaller castors lower the whole height range.
• Steel frame, with polyurethane cushions on our build.

Handicare Bure XL Stand Tall Walker specifications

Handicare publishes the rest in the instructions for use. Protection class is IPX5, with IPX6 on the control box and the motor, and the charger is rated at a maximum of 400 mA. The duty cycle is 1 minute in active mode to 19 minutes at rest, and the motor's operation time is 5% at a maximum continuous operation of 1 minute. Operating environment is 5 to 40 degrees C at 20% to 80% relative humidity, non-condensing. The materials a user or caregiver touches for a prolonged period are Poroflex synthetic leather on the standard cushions, polyurethane on the PU cushions, Dryflex on the handles, and a glass-filled polyamide brake lever. The walker complies with the requirements of the Medical Device Regulation 2017/745, and Handicare gives it an expected service life of 8 years.

The 100 mm castor build runs 890 to 1290 mm high with a 1183 mm turning diameter, and the 75 mm build runs 860 to 1260 mm with the same turning diameter. Our code specifies the 125 mm build.

Which Bure is the right one?

The decision is simple at the top of the table and harder below it. If the user is above 150 kg, the XL is the only Bure that will take them, and the fixed frame is the price of that. Below 150 kg, the Double 2.0 gives you a frame that narrows for doorways and opens around a wheelchair, and the Rise & Go adds a power rise that pulls the user up on a harness.

Cleaning and inspection

Handicare's cleaning instruction is one line and the exclusion matters: clean with a lukewarm soap solution or an alcohol-based cleaning agent, no petroleum products.

The daily checks Handicare lists are the ones that catch a problem early: the walker feels firm and free from movement, it does not rattle during manoeuvres, it is level with all four castors in contact with the floor, the castors rotate and are securely fixed to the frame, and it is not dirty.

Handicare requires a thorough inspection at least once per year, performed by authorised personnel in accordance with Direct Healthcare Group's instructions, and states that repairs and maintenance may only be done by authorised personnel using original spare parts.

Service, repairs, and warranty

When something on the walker needs work, you call the shop that set it up, not an overseas parts desk. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department, and our technicians come to the home or workplace.

Handicare warranty and inspection

Handicare requires a thorough inspection at least once per year by authorised personnel, and states that repairs and maintenance may only be done by authorised personnel using original spare parts. The expected service life of the product is 8 years. No warranty year count is printed, so ask us for the current terms that ship with your serial number and we will handle a claim with you. We can quote the annual inspection with the walker.

One thing worth telling your service file: the Bure XL runs Linak drives and a Linak control box, where the Bure Double 2.0 and the Rise & Go run TiMOTION. The spare parts are not interchangeable.
