Description
The Golden Companion HD is Golden's heavy duty 3-wheel scooter for a 500 lb (227 kg) rider who wants a captain-width seat on a 3-wheel deck. Westin Healthcare delivers and sets the GC540 up for homes in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area.
Golden rates it at 500 lbs (227 kg), 6 mph (9.7 km/h), and 16 miles (25.7 km) on two NF22 batteries. The turning radius is 51 inches (130 cm). Assembled weight is 225.5 lbs (102 kg). The extra-wide seat is 22 inches by 20 inches.
Who this scooter is for
This scooter is for a person who needs a heavy duty 3-wheel scooter, stays at or under 500 lbs, and wants a 22 by 20 inch high-back seat that swivels. Families usually call us when the 400 lb Companion GC340 is not enough capacity, and they still want a 3-wheel turn rather than an Avenger or Eagle.
If you want a 400 lb Companion that comes apart more easily, start with the GC340. If you want 500 lbs on four pneumatic tires, see the Avenger or the Eagle. The Companion HD is not a travel scooter and Golden does not print an easy car-trunk split for it.
- 500 lb (227 kg) rating and a 120 amp controller
- 16 miles (25.7 km) on two NF22 batteries
- 22 by 20 inch extra-wide high-back seat
Range, speed, and batteries
Golden's current Companion HD sell sheet rates the GC540 at 16 miles (25.7 km) on two NF22 batteries. The Canada product page prints that as 26 km, which matches. Top speed is 6 mph (9.7 km/h). Heavier riders, hills, and cold weather shorten those figures. The charger is an 8 amp Super Charger, off-board. Golden does not print a charge-time figure on the GC540 sheet.
A 120 amp controller and rear-wheel drive move the scooter. Freewheel mode lets a helper push it. USB on the tiller charges a phone. The LCD console shows fault codes and battery level. Rear suspension is standard.
Portability and transport
The Companion HD is a full-size heavy duty scooter. Assembled weight is 225.5 lbs (102 kg). Width is 26 inches (66 cm). Golden's brochure lists a 101.5 lb (46.0 kg) heaviest piece and does not print front and rear half weights. Do not plan on a one-person car-trunk split. Westin delivers and sets the GC540 up in the home or garage.
The two NF22 batteries are sealed lead-acid. Golden's sheet marks them air-travel safe as sealed cells. That is not a lithium carry-on pack. Confirm the airline before you book. Golden does not publish a GC540 owner manual on the Canada manuals page. On the rest of the Companion line the manuals say not to operate or store the scooter in rain, snow, mist, or below-freezing temperatures.

Companion HD, Avenger, or Eagle: which 500 lb scooter fits
The Companion HD is the 500 lb 3-wheel step: 51 inch turn, solid tires, 22 by 20 inch seat, 16 mile NF22 range. The Avenger is the 7 mph 4-wheel with 13 inch pneumatic tires. The Eagle is the 8 mph outdoor 4-wheel. Pick Companion HD for a 3-wheel turn and a wide seat on pavement. Pick Avenger or Eagle for outdoor pneumatic tires.
Funding help for a mobility scooter in Ontario
Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) can fund 75% of the cost of a mobility scooter when the need is long-term and the scooter is prescribed through an assessment by an ADP-registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist, and some income-support programs cover the full cost. Not every scooter qualifies, so talk to us before you buy. March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs can also help. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through.

Golden manufacturer warranty
Golden's printed Companion HD terms are 5 years on the frame, 2 years on the drive train, 2 years on electronics, and 1 year on the batteries. Wear items such as tires and shrouds sit outside that term. We handle the claim with you.
Frequently asked questions
How far can a mobility scooter go?
The Golden Companion HD travels up to 16 miles (25.7 km) on two NF22 batteries. That is the figure on Golden's current sell sheet and matches the Canada page's 26 km line.
How long does a mobility scooter take to charge?
The Companion HD uses an 8 amp off-board Super Charger. Golden does not print a charge-time figure on the GC540 sell sheet. Ask us how long the NF22 pair we ship takes to fill.
Can I take a mobility scooter on a plane?
The Companion HD uses two NF22 sealed lead-acid batteries. Golden marks them air-travel safe as sealed cells. That is not a lithium carry-on pack, and the scooter itself is not a folding travel scooter. Confirm the airline before you book.
Can you use a mobility scooter in the rain?
Golden does not publish a GC540 owner manual on the Canada manuals page. On the rest of the Companion line the manuals say not to operate or store the scooter in rain, snow, mist, or below-freezing temperatures. Treat the Companion HD the same way unless Golden prints a different weather note on your unit.
Does ADP cover scooters?
Ontario's Assistive Devices Program can help with a power scooter when a long-term need is confirmed through an ADP-registered therapist and an ADP-registered vendor. Westin Healthcare walks that route with you. A scooter bought before those steps is not reimbursed.
What is the difference between a 3-wheel and a 4-wheel scooter?
The Companion HD is a 3-wheel heavy duty scooter with a 51 inch (130 cm) turning radius. The Avenger is a 4-wheel 500 lb scooter with a 67 inch turn. Three wheels here keep the indoor turn on a 500 lb platform.
How much weight can the Companion HD hold?
The Golden Companion HD is rated at 500 lbs (227 kg). Stay at or under that figure. Golden's 400 lb 3-wheel is the Companion GC340, a different scooter.
Does the Companion HD have a high-back seat?
The Companion HD ships with an extra-wide high-back seat, 22 inches wide by 20 inches deep, with a headrest. A 20 by 20 inch captain seat is listed as an option. Ask us which seat we can order.
What is the warranty?
The Companion HD carries 5 years on the frame, 2 years on the drive train and electronics, and 1 year on the batteries. Westin Healthcare processes the claim.
