Who this overlay is for

This overlay is for a person who already has a mattress, needs a wipeable non-powered prevention foam on top of it, and whose weight is within Span's 250 lb rating. Span writes it for pressure injury prevention in moderate to high risk patients in hospital, long-term care, and home settings.

Families and directors of care usually call us when the therapist has asked for a Geo-Matt overlay, not a full replacement mattress and not a pump. If the care team has asked for a complete foam mattress, we quote a Geo-Mattress tier. If they have asked for air therapy or a convertible surface, we already stock Span PressureGuard Custom Care and Span-Care surfaces and will quote those instead.

Construction and how it works

The Geo-Matt Overlay is a non-powered foam overlay. Span cuts the top into more than 800 individually responsive cells. Smaller cells support the head and lower extremities. Larger cells support the heavier torso and thighs. Each cell can move on its own, so the surface follows the person's shape and reduces the effect of pressure and shear. There is no gel sheet and no pump.

Ring-of-Air channels help ventilate the surface and move heat away from the skin so moisture is less likely to build up. The wipe-and-clean model uses a bacteriostatic vinyl/nylon cover that is fire resistant, fluid-proof, tear resistant, cleanable, and replaceable. A pleated design ties the cover to the cells so the fabric is less likely to hammock. Side elastic bands help hold the overlay on the mattress. A side zipper with a flap helps keep fluids out. Soft Skin is the other cover path: a flexible, vapor-permeable sleeve that resists liquids.

Consumer sizes are Full (52 by 72 inches), Queen (58 by 75 inches), and King (two pads, 74 by 75 inches). The overlay is non-powered. The Geo-Matt Overlay sits on the mattress you already have. Span publishes the standard overlay as 33 inches wide by 72 inches long by 3.5 inches high. The 80 inch overlay is the length for an 80 inch mattress. Full, Queen, and King cuts are for mattresses of those names. On the vinyl/nylon cover, side elastic bands help secure the overlay to the mattress.

Span does not publish a bed-model list for this overlay. Match the overlay to the mattress footprint, then keep it centred so the person cannot slip into a gap at the rail. A 33 inch overlay is narrower than a 36 inch homecare mattress; choose the size that matches the mattress you have.
