Description

The Empulse F35 is Sunrise Medical's compact front pull device for a manual wheelchair. Westin Healthcare quotes it and docks it to a measured rigid or folding frame for homes in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. This is not a power wheelchair. The clinic measures the front tubes first. Then Westin orders the subframe to that chair.

Sunrise's Canada page lists a 242 lb (110 kg) rating, a range of up to 9.3 miles (15.0 km), and two top-speed builds: 9.3 mph (15 km/h) or 3.7 mph (6.0 km/h). The unit weighs 19.8 lbs (9 kg) with the battery and subframe, or 16.5 lbs (7.5 kg) to lift off the subframe. A 250 W motor handles a 6 degree (11 percent) grade at the 242 lb rating.

Who this pull device is for

The Empulse F35 is for an active manual-chair rider who wants urban indoor and outdoor power without swapping the rear wheels. Sunrise wants adequate upper body strength and hand function for the handlebar. The front casters lift off the ground when the F35 is docked, so the 6.5 inch drive wheel is what you steer.

If you want a longer outdoor handbike, start with the Empulse StreetJet. If you need to keep the chair's footprint for indoor work, see the Empulse R90 or the Empulse M90.

  • Front pull with a one-motion dock onto a subframe that can stay on the chair
  • Frame widths Sunrise prints at 10 to 19 inches, mount height 10 to 14.5 inches
  • Not for tilt chairs, and not for a clamp on a swing-away hanger

Range, speed, and batteries

The Empulse F35 travels up to 9.3 miles (15.0 km) per charge on the 36 V 4 Ah lithium-ion pack. Sunrise says range changes with surface, rider weight, driving, temperature, and terrain. The flyer prints about two hours to charge.

Order either a 9.3 mph (15 km/h) or a 3.7 mph (6.0 km/h) maximum. Each build has three modes (9.3 / 6.2 / 3.7 mph, or 3.7 / 2.5 / 1.5 mph) and three acceleration profiles. Assistive cruise holds speed on a grade. Either brake drops cruise. The pack is IATA listed; the airline must still accept UN3171.

How it attaches and what it fits

A subframe stays on the chair. Pull the tube latch to undock. Align and push forward to lock. Clamps can take the whole assembly off for a transfer or a trunk. Handles fold flush.

Sunrise's compatibility guide (not the shorter marketing line) is the fit rule. The F35 needs a 1.5 inch (35 mm) straight, unbent tube on the front of a rigid frame, or on the front or bottom of a folding frame. It cannot clamp to a swing-away hanger. Tilt chairs are a no-go. Carbon frames are a recommended no-go because clamp force can crack the tube. Front casters of any size lift off; Sunrise wants about 1.6 inches (40 mm) of air. Live chairs we already build include the Quickie 2 and the Nitrum. We still measure the front tubes.

F35 or StreetJet

Funding help for a power assist device in Ontario

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) lists power add-ons for manual wheelchairs among its funded mobility devices. ADP can fund 75% of the cost of a qualifying power assist device when it is prescribed through an assessment by an ADP-registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist with an eligible wheelchair, and some income-support programs cover the full client share. Not every device or situation qualifies, so talk to us before you buy. March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs can also help. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through.

Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA

Westin's own team delivers and sets up this power assist device across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area after the assessment and the fit to the chair are in place. We bring it in, dock the subframe, and show you the latch, the throttle, and the charger before we leave.

We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a device first. For a scheduled in-home setup, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works. Same-day delivery is offered through our hospital bed rental service; purchased devices are delivered and set up on a scheduled date.

If the device is going outside the GTA, ask us for a freight quote. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery (bring-in, unwrap, test, take packaging away) is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.
