Description
The Span America Cross-Cut Cushion is Span America's economical wheelchair seat cushion, which disperses pressure through a segmented top surface under an anti-slip cover. Span America is a Savaria company. Westin Healthcare stocks it and delivers it to homes and care sites across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area.
This page is the Cross-Cut Cushion in all four of the sizes Span America publishes. It is not the Geo-Matt cushion, the Geo-Matt PRT, Geo-Matt Contour, the Geo-Matt Wedge, Gel-T, or the Equalizer. Those are separate Span America articles with their own part numbers, and we sell all of them. If a clinician has named one of those by name, ask us for that product instead.
Size options
Use Cushion size. Match the cushion width to the measured wheelchair seat width, not to the person's hip width. Every Cross-Cut code is supplied with the anti-slip cover and is packed six to a case, which is why care homes and clinics tend to order it this way.
- 16 in W x 16 in L x 3 in H, anti-slip cover, 6 per case (CC1616-96)
- 18 in W x 16 in L x 3 in H, anti-slip cover, 6 per case (CC1816-96)
- 18 in W x 18 in L x 3 in H, anti-slip cover, 6 per case (CC1818-96)
- 20 in W x 18 in L x 3 in H, anti-slip cover, 6 per case (CC2018-96)
Fire-barrier versions conforming to 2000 NFPA 101 and Cal TB 133 are available: Span America replaces the -96 suffix with -29 on the item number. Ask us and we will quote the fire-barrier code. The molded Sling-Fill base is quoted separately.
Who this is for
This cushion is for a wheelchair user who needs straightforward pressure dispersion and comfort in the chair, rather than a contoured positioning cushion or a gel cushion. Span America's own summary for it is economical prevention and comfort, and its Quick Facts panel lists one use: comfort.
Care homes and families usually reach for the Cross-Cut when several chairs need a decent seat cushion at once and no one has been prescribed a specific therapy surface. If a seating assessment has asked for positioning, leg channels, or a skin-protection cushion, ask us about the Equalizer or the Geo-Matt range instead.
- Wheelchair seats 16, 18, or 20 inches wide
- People who need comfort and pressure dispersion rather than active positioning
- Facilities buying several cushions at once, since every code is a case of six
- Fabric sling seats, when the molded Sling-Fill base is added
Construction and how it works
The Cross-Cut is non-powered foam. Span America cuts the top surface into segments rather than leaving it as one flat slab. Each segment can deflect on its own, so load spreads across the surface instead of concentrating under the bony points, and the cushion moves with the person rather than resisting them. Span America's phrasing is that it provides pressure dispersion and patient comfort through a segmented top surface.
The cover has an anti-slip top surface and a non-skid bottom, so the person stays put on the cushion and the cushion stays put on the chair. The underside of the cover carries a built-in sleeve for Span America's molded Sling-Fill base, which is sold separately and matters when the wheelchair seat is a fabric sling that hammocks under load.
Span America builds the cushion 3 inches high in every size and lists a 1-year warranty on it. There is no pump, no power, and nothing to maintain beyond wiping the cover.

Delivery in Brampton and the GTA
Westin Healthcare's own team delivers across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area, on its own or alongside a chair, bed, or lift setup. We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see one first. For a scheduled drop-off, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works.
This is a case carton holding six cushions. The Canada-wide free ground-shipping offer on smaller goods can apply when it ships on its own. If it travels with a hospital bed, the bed is oversized and White-Glove Delivery is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.
Which wheelchairs this cushion fits
Span America publishes the Cross-Cut in four seat sizes: 16 by 16, 18 by 16, 18 by 18, and 20 by 18 inches, all 3 inches high. Measure the wheelchair seat width and depth and match the cushion to the seat. Span America does not name a wheelchair brand or model for this cushion.
For a typical adult wheelchair, start at 18 by 16 inches (CC1816-96). Use 18 by 18 inches (CC1818-96) when the seat is as deep as it is wide, and 20 by 18 inches (CC2018-96) for a wider chair. The 16 by 16 inch size (CC1616-96) suits a narrow or a paediatric-width adult seat.
The bottom of the cover takes Span America's molded Sling-Fill base. Span America writes that the insert fills the gap created by a fabric sling and creates a flat, rigid foundation. It is one size, it is not included, and it is the right addition when the seat is a hammocked fabric sling rather than a solid seat pan. Ask us to add it to the quote.
Funding help in Ontario
The Span America Cross-Cut Cushion is an ADP positioning device category item. Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) can fund 75% of the cost of positioning devices such as cushions and back supports when they are prescribed through an assessment by an ADP-registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist with an eligible mobility device, and some income-support programs cover the full cost. Not every product qualifies, so talk to us before you buy. March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs can also help. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through.
Service and warranty
When something needs work, you call the shop that sold it. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department.
Span America manufacturer warranty
Span America lists a 1-year warranty on the Cross-Cut Cushion. That is a shorter term than the 18 months on the Geo-Matt seating range and the 2 years on the Equalizer, and it is worth knowing before you choose. We handle the warranty claim with you either way.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Cross-Cut Cushion?
It is Span America's economical wheelchair seat cushion. The top surface is cut into segments so that pressure disperses across the cushion instead of concentrating under the bony points, and the whole thing sits under a cover with an anti-slip top and a non-skid bottom.
What does the segmented top actually do?
Each segment can deflect on its own. A flat slab of foam pushes back as one piece, so load concentrates wherever the body is hardest. Cutting the surface into segments lets the foam under a bony point give way without dragging the foam beside it down too, which spreads the load and reduces shear against the skin.
What sizes can I get?
Four: 16 by 16, 18 by 16, 18 by 18, and 20 by 18 inches. All four are 3 inches high and all four come with the anti-slip cover.
How many cushions come in an order?
Six. Span America packs every Cross-Cut code as a case of six, and there is no single-unit code in its catalogue for this cushion. If you need one cushion rather than six, call us and we will suggest an alternative from the Span America seating range that is sold singly.
Does this cushion need a pump?
No. The Cross-Cut is non-powered foam. There is nothing to plug in and no air to check.
What weight can it take?
Span America does not publish a weight limit for the Cross-Cut Cushion, so we do not quote one. Tell us the person's weight when you enquire and we will confirm the current figure with Savaria Canada before you order. If you need a published bariatric rating today, the Geo-Matt PRT bariatric sizes carry one.
Is this a skin-protection cushion?
Span America files the Cross-Cut under basic prevention and comfort, and its Medicare listing is the General Use code rather than a skin protection code. If a clinician has asked for a skin protection or positioning cushion, ask us about the Geo-Matt PRT or the Equalizer.
Can I add a Sling-Fill base?
Yes. The bottom of the cover has a built-in sleeve that takes Span America's molded Sling-Fill insert, code 2SFB. It is one size, it is sold separately, and it is the right call when the wheelchair seat is a fabric sling that hammocks.
Is there a fire-barrier version?
Yes. Span America offers fire-barrier versions that conform with 2000 NFPA 101 and Cal TB 133; the -96 suffix on the item number is replaced with -29. Care homes often need this. Ask us and we will quote the fire-barrier code.
How do I clean the cover?
Wipe the cover with the disinfectant your clinician allows and let it dry fully before the person sits again. Span America does not publish a wash cycle for this cover, so we do not quote one.
What is the warranty?
Span America lists a 1-year warranty on the Cross-Cut Cushion. Westin Healthcare processes the warranty work through our service and repairs page.
How is this different from the Geo-Matt cushion?
Both use a segmented surface, but Span America positions them differently. The Geo-Matt range carries skin-protection Medicare coding, a longer warranty, and published weight limits. The Cross-Cut is the economical comfort option with a General Use listing. We sell both, so tell us what the care plan asks for.
