What does it fit? Bure Standard, Bure S, Bure Low, Bure Space, Bure Double 2.0, Bure XL, Bure Rise & Go and Bure Rise & Go DB. Match the size already on the walker, because castor size sets the walker's height: a Bure Double 2.0 is 90-130 cm on 125 mm castors and 85-125 cm on 75 mm. This is a directional lock, not a brake; the brake castor at this size is 56-361. Maximum user weight is set by the walker and does not change.

Description

The Bure Directional Lock Castor, 125 mm is Direct Healthcare Group's 125 mm swivel castor with a directional lock for Bure StandTall walkers, manufacturer code 56-359. The directional lock holds the castor pointing straight ahead so the walker tracks instead of wandering, which is what a user leaning on the armrests actually needs. Westin Healthcare ships it across Canada and our technicians can fit it on a service visit across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area.

This is the 125 mm size. Bure walkers are ordered with 75 mm, 100 mm or 125 mm castors, and the size sets the height of the whole walker. Direct Healthcare Group states that unless a catalogue height says otherwise, the heights shown are the heights with 125 mm castors, so this is the reference build. Order the size the walker already runs on.

What it does

A walker on four free-swivelling castors is easy to turn and hard to steer. That is fine for a caregiver pushing it into position and unhelpful for a user walking behind it, because the frame drifts off line every time weight shifts from one arm to the other.

A directional lock fixes that. It holds the castor's swivel so the wheel runs straight, and Direct Healthcare Group places the control where the user can reach it from the walking position rather than somewhere a caregiver has to crouch for. On handbrake-equipped Bure walkers the manufacturer describes the directional locks as part of the brake assembly, working together with a handbrake that acts on the rear castors.

  • Walking practice down a corridor, where the walker needs to hold a line rather than curve into a wall
  • Users who load one side harder than the other, after a stroke or a single-side injury
  • Replacing a worn or damaged castor, so the walker goes back into service the same day

The lock changes how the walker steers and nothing else. Maximum user weight is set by the walker, not the castor: Direct Healthcare Group publishes 150 kg (330 lb) for Bure Standard, Bure S, Bure Low, Bure Space, Bure Double 2.0 and Bure Rise & Go DB, and 240 kg (529 lb) for Bure XL.

Which walkers it fits

It fits the whole Bure range. Direct Healthcare Group's GATE catalogue marks 56-359 against Bure Standard and Bure S, Bure Low, Bure Space, Bure Double 2.0 and Bure XL in the walking table accessory list, and against Bure Rise & Go and Bure Rise & Go DB in the Rise & Go accessory list. Our own Bure walkers sit on the Bure standing and mobility aids page and the Bure Rise and Go gait trainer page.

Match the size that is already on the walker. Bure walkers are built with one castor size throughout, and the size sets the height. On a Bure Double 2.0 the published height is 90 to 130 cm on 125 mm castors and 85 to 125 cm on 75 mm castors; on a Bure Rise & Go DB it is 95 to 135 cm on 125 mm and 90 to 130 cm on 75 mm. If your walker needs the lower build, order the 75 mm directional lock castor instead. Direct Healthcare Group also lists a 100 mm version as 56-355 if that is what you are matching.

It is not a brake castor. Direct Healthcare Group lists brake castors as separate parts in the same range: 56-361 at 125 mm, 56-358 at 100 mm and 56-387 at 75 mm. A brake holds the walker still. A directional lock holds it straight. Tell us which job you need done and we will confirm the code before anything ships.

Direct Healthcare Group publishes the wheel diameter and the fitment for this part and nothing else. No load rating, tread material or stem specification is printed against 56-359, so none is claimed here. If you need a mechanical detail for a facility record, ask us and we will request it from the manufacturer.

Fitting and replacement

Talk to us before you fit it. Bure's technical manual is direct about castors: they are fixed to the lower frame with thread locker or lock nuts, and the instruction is to replace the whole castor assembly rather than take one apart. That is why this part is an assembly and not a wheel. Refitting it correctly means the right bolt torque and either a fresh locking nut or fresh thread locker, depending on the walker.

Our technicians can bring the castors out on a service visit across Brampton and the GTA, fit them, and run the rest of Bure's annual checklist while they are there: castors rolling freely and tread undamaged, castors firmly fastened to the lower frame, castor brakes working on all four, handbrake working, frame free of mechanical damage. Book through service and repairs or call (905) 451-7743.

Related Bure parts and walkers

The walkers this castor belongs to are the Bure standing and mobility aids range and the Bure Rise and Go gait trainer. The other directional lock size we list is the 75 mm castor (57-043).

Other spare parts and lift hardware sit on the lift parts shelf, and every patient lift we stock is on the patient lifts hub.

Service, repairs, and warranty

When something on the equipment needs work, you call the shop that set it up, not an overseas parts desk. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department. Our technicians come to the home or workplace.

Bure service position on castors

Direct Healthcare Group's Bure technical manual is specific about castors: they are fixed to the lower frame with thread locker or lock nuts, and the instruction is not to dismantle a castor but to replace the whole castor assembly. That is why this is sold as an assembly and not as a wheel.

The annual service checklist asks whether the castors roll easily, whether the tread is undamaged, whether they are firmly fastened to the lower frame, and whether the castor brakes work on all four. If any of those fail, the manual's remedy is to clean or replace the castor. Our technicians run that check on a service visit and bring the parts with them.

No warranty term is printed for the castor itself. Ask us for the terms that apply to your walker and its serial number and we will handle a claim with you. Bure walkers are for indoor use, and damaged parts should be replaced straight away by experienced personnel.

Frequently asked questions

What does a directional lock do?

It holds the castor pointing straight ahead so the walker tracks instead of wandering. Direct Healthcare Group describes the brake assembly on Bure walkers as including directional locks that make it easier for the user to stay on course when walking, and it places the controls so the user can reach them from the walking position. It is a walking aid, not a parking brake.

Is this the same thing as a castor with a brake?

No. Direct Healthcare Group lists them as two separate parts in the same range. A castor with a brake locks the wheel so the walker stays put. A castor with directional locking holds the swivel so the walker runs straight. Order the one the walker was built with, or tell us what you want the walker to do and we will work it out with you.

Which Bure walkers does it fit?

Direct Healthcare Group's GATE catalogue marks this part against Bure Standard and Bure S, Bure Low, Bure Space, Bure Double 2.0 and Bure XL, and against Bure Rise & Go and Bure Rise & Go DB. That is the whole current Bure range.

Can I mix castor sizes on one walker?

Do not. Bure walkers are ordered with one castor size throughout, and the size sets the height of the whole walker. Mixing sizes puts the frame out of level. If you are replacing a damaged castor, match the size already fitted.

How do I know what size is on my walker?

Measure the wheel diameter, or read the part number on the walker's ID label and call us with it. Bure walkers are built with 125 mm castors and Direct Healthcare Group also lists a 75 mm version as 57-043. We will confirm the size before anything ships.

Does it change what the walker can carry?

No. The maximum user weight is set by the walker, not the castor. Direct Healthcare Group publishes 150 kg (330 lb) for Bure Standard, Bure S, Bure Low, Bure Space, Bure Double 2.0 and Bure Rise & Go DB, and 240 kg (529 lb) for Bure XL.

Does the castor size change the walker's height?

Yes, and this is the fact to get right. Direct Healthcare Group states that catalogue heights are quoted with 125 mm castors unless a row says otherwise. On a Bure Double 2.0 the published height is 90 to 130 cm on 125 mm castors and 85 to 125 cm on 75 mm; on a Bure Rise & Go DB it is 95 to 135 cm on 125 mm and 90 to 130 cm on 75 mm. Changing size changes the walker.

Can I fit it myself?

Talk to us first. Bure's technical manual says castors are fixed to the lower frame with thread locker or lock nuts and that the whole castor assembly is replaced rather than taken apart, and it asks for damaged parts to be replaced by experienced personnel. Our technicians can do it on a service visit and check the brakes, the handbrake and the frame while they are there.

How many should I order?

A Bure walker runs on four castors. Direct Healthcare Group's catalogue does not print an ordering unit against this row, so tell us how many you need and our order desk will confirm the pack size with Savaria before the order goes in. If you are replacing one damaged castor, say so and we will price a single.

How do I look after them?

Keep the tread clean and free of hair and grit, and wipe the walker with a soap solution or surface disinfectant. Direct Healthcare Group notes that Bure walkers can be run through a tunnel washer because the electrical parts carry IP65 protection, but that the product is not corrosion proof and machine washing may shorten its life.
