Description
The Sunrise Medical Quickie Nitrum is an ultralight rigid wheelchair in ShapeLoc 7020 oval aluminum. Westin Healthcare configures it to an occupational therapist or physiotherapist prescription and delivers it for homes in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. It is not an off-the-shelf chair that ships the same day you click buy.
Sunrise builds the Nitrum by hand in California as an open frame or a Hybrid dual-tube frame. The current Canada specification table lists 18.3 lb on the open frame, 20.3 lb on the Hybrid, a 275 lb rating on the open frame, and a 300 lb rating on the Hybrid. Seat sizes run 12 to 20 inches wide and 12 to 20 inches deep. An ADP-registered therapist assessment comes first.
Who this chair is for
This chair is for a person who needs a long-term ultralight rigid wheelchair, who fits the 275 or 300 lb frame the therapist names, and who will use the chair for six months or longer. Therapists often pick the Nitrum when they want Sunrise's current flagship rigid, with a folding back for the car and a centre of gravity that can be set from 0 to 4 inches.
If the prescription needs more everyday adjustability at a lower capacity, look at the Quickie 5R. If the therapist wants a simpler value rigid, see the Quickie QRi or the Quickie GP. The Nitrum is not a folding chair. For a current folding ultralight, start with the Quickie QS5 X.
- A rigid ultralight built to prescription
- Open frame at 275 lb, or Hybrid at 300 lb
- Someone who self-propels and wants a light lift
Design and build
The Nitrum uses oval 7020-series aerospace aluminum that Sunrise heat-treats with ShapeLoc. Hollow-forged caster links replace a stack of welded pieces. The open frame is the lightest path. The Hybrid adds a dual front tube for a stiffer ride and the 300 lb rating.
An Active Rigid option welds the back and axle stems for still fewer moving parts. Transit hardware that meets ANSI/RESNA WC-19 is on the Canada form, and is not available with Active Rigid. The back folds with a release bar or the optional Twist-Lock bar so the chair lifts into a car. Optional caster LEDs come off to charge.
- Rigid 7020 oval aluminum, model EIR12
- Open or Hybrid frame
- Centre of gravity 0 to 4 inches
- Folding back for transport
- Transit option except on Active Rigid
Quickie Nitrum specifications
These figures are for the Quickie Nitrum on Sunrise Medical Canada's current specification table, the July 2025 Canada order form, and the current brochure. The specification tab holds the stored values. Do not mix them with the 5R or the QRi.
Seat width 12 to 20 inches. Seat depth 12 to 20 inches. Front seat-to-floor 16 to 21 inches. Rear seat-to-floor 13 to 20 inches. Back height 10 to 20 inches adjustable, or 8 to 19 inches fixed. Back angle -18 to +10 degrees. Frame angles 75, 80, or 85 degrees. Camber 0, 3, or 6 degrees. Centre of gravity 0 to 4 inches. Open frame 275 lbs and 18.3 lbs (transport 10.8 lbs, or 9.7 lbs without wheel locks). Hybrid 300 lbs and 20.3 lbs (transport 12.8 lbs, or 11.7 lbs without wheel locks).
Warranty for the original purchaser is Sunrise's Limited Lifetime term on the frame, and one year on Sunrise-made parts. Wear items such as tires, tubes, upholstery, pads, and grips sit outside that term. Sunrise notes that coverage can vary by province.
Size and configuration
The Nitrum is built to the assessment, not pulled off a shelf as a finished everyday cart item. Westin records open or Hybrid, seat width, seat depth, frame angle, back, wheels, and colour from the therapist's measurements and the Sunrise order form. Those choices do not turn the chair into a next-day cart item.
This is a self-propel rigid wheelchair. The back folds for a lift. It is not a folding box-frame chair and not a transport chair.
Nitrum or another Quickie rigid chair
The Nitrum is Sunrise Canada's current flagship rigid. The Quickie 5R is the more adjustable 265 lb rigid with Classic, Performance, and XTR paths. The Quickie QRi is the simpler 22 lb value rigid. The Quickie GP is the classic series with a Built-4-Me path to 350 lb.
If the therapist wants a current folding ultralight instead, start with the Quickie QS5 X or the Quickie 2. The withdrawn Xenon 2 was a folding chair, not a Nitrum.
Funding help for a wheelchair in Ontario
This chair is an ADP-eligible category device. Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) pays 75% of the approved price for eligible clients, and clients receiving Ontario Works, ODSP, or ACSD support can be covered for the full cost. The route starts with an assessment by an ADP-registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist, who confirms the need and the right category before anything is ordered: a chair bought before approval is not reimbursed. Westin Healthcare works with ADP authorizers and submissions every week, configures the chair to the prescription, and walks you through the paperwork. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to start the conversation.
Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA
Westin's own team delivers and sets up this chair across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area after the prescription is built. We bring it in, fit the rear wheels, and show you the wheel locks and the folding back before we leave.
We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a rigid ultralight first. For a scheduled in-home setup, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works. Same-day delivery is offered through our hospital bed rental service; purchased chairs are delivered and set up on a scheduled date.
If the chair is going outside the GTA, ask us for a freight quote. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery (bring-in, unwrap, test, take packaging away) is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.

Service and warranty
When something on the chair needs work, you call the shop that set it up, not a distant parts desk. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department. Our technicians come to the home or workplace. ADP does not pay for repairs.
Sunrise Medical manufacturer warranty
Sunrise prints a Limited Lifetime term on the Nitrum frame for the original purchaser, and one year on Sunrise-made parts. Tires, tubes, upholstery, pads, and grips are outside that term. Coverage can vary by province. We handle the claim with you. Ask us if an extended warranty is offered for your order.
Frequently asked questions
How much does the Nitrum weigh?
The Quickie Nitrum open frame lists 18.3 lbs, with a 10.8 lb transport weight (9.7 lbs without wheel locks). The Hybrid lists 20.3 lbs, with a 12.8 lb transport weight (11.7 lbs without wheel locks). Those figures are Sunrise's published chair and transport weights.
Nitrum or 5R?
The Quickie Nitrum is Sunrise's current flagship rigid, 275 or 300 lb depending on Open or Hybrid. The Quickie 5R is a 265 lb rigid with Classic, Performance, and XTR suspension paths and a wider axle-plate range. The therapist names the frame after the assessment.
Nitrum open frame or Hybrid?
The Quickie Nitrum open frame is the lightest path and is rated at 275 lbs. The Hybrid dual-tube frame is rated at 300 lbs and is the stiffer front end. Both share the same 12 to 20 inch seat range. The therapist picks the frame on the Sunrise form.
Does ADP cover a rigid wheelchair?
Ontario's Assistive Devices Program can fund a long-term manual wheelchair after an ADP-registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist assessment. We cannot promise that a specific person will be approved. Use the funding page before any order is placed.
Who qualifies for ADP on this chair?
You must be an Ontario resident with a valid Ontario health card and a disability that needs a mobility aid for six months or longer. An ADP-registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist has to assess you before anyone orders the chair. Income is not part of the test.
How does the 75 / 25 split work?
For eligible clients, ADP pays 75 percent of the approved price and the person pays 25 percent. People on Ontario Works, ODSP, or Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities can be covered at 100 percent of that approved price. Extra items that sit outside the ADP chart are billed separately.
What is the assessment process?
Book an ADP-registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist. They confirm the need, trial equipment where they can, and complete the application with Westin as the ADP-registered vendor. We submit the form. Do not buy the chair first. A chair bought before approval is not reimbursed.
How long does ADP take?
The ministry says it aims to review a mobility application within eight weeks of receiving it. That is ADP's stated aim, not a Westin delivery date. After approval we order the Sunrise frame to the prescription and book a setup date.
Can I try a Nitrum before the order?
Westin keeps assessment and trial equipment for therapists to use. Call (905) 451-7743 or come into a Brampton or Toronto store and we will see what is on the floor. A trial chair may not be the same colour or size as the chair that is later built for you.
How should the seat width fit?
The therapist measures seated hip width and leaves a little room on each side. Sunrise lists 12 to 20 inches on the Nitrum form. Seat depth is 12 to 20 inches. Those numbers come from the assessment.
Will the Nitrum go in a car?
The Quickie Nitrum back folds. Sunrise prints transport weights from 9.7 lbs on the open frame without wheel locks. Rear wheels come off. The chair is not a car seat unless the transit option is on the order and the vehicle is set up for it. Active Rigid cannot take that transit option.
What happens if ADP declines the application?
ADP sends a letter with the reason and how to follow up, including an appeal. We will sit with you and the therapist on the next step. Other routes such as March of Dimes Canada or Veterans Affairs Canada may still help.
