Description

The Empulse M90 is Sunrise Medical's 24 inch wheel-drive power assist for a manual wheelchair. Westin Healthcare quotes it and fits the chair-specific hubs for homes in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. This is not a power wheelchair. The motors live in the rear wheels. The clinic confirms a 24 inch wheel and zero camber before we order.

Sunrise's Canada page lists a 265 lb (120 kg) rating, 3.7 mph (6.0 km/h), and up to 9.3 miles (15.0 km). The complete set is 26 lbs (12 kg). Each wheel is 13 lbs (6 kg) with its 4.0 Ah pack, or 12 lbs (5 kg) with the pack off. Sunrise calls it the lightest wheel-drive in its class.

Who these wheels are for

The Empulse M90 is for a rider who wants power in the hubs without a front bike or an under-seat box. Drive it two ways on the same hardware: an all-way toggle, like a small power-chair stick, or a speed controller with handrim steering. Sunrise's chooser points the toggle at people with less endurance or hand function, and the handrim mode at people who still want to push.

If you only want handrim assist on a Quickie 2, 5R, GP, Nitrum, or Zippie X'CAPE, the Quickie Xtender is the older wheel add-on. If you want an under-seat push that does not change the wheels, see the Empulse R90.

  • 24 inch wheels only, zero camber after the hardware is on
  • Dual controller: all-way toggle or speed plus handrims
  • Sunrise guide names Nitrum, Quickie 2, 5R, QRi, and QS5 X; other frames only after the guide

Range, speed, and batteries

The Empulse M90 travels up to 9.3 miles (15.0 km) per charge. Each hub holds a 4.0 Ah lithium-ion pack at 1.3 lbs (0.6 kg). Sunrise prints those packs under 100 Wh and lists them as UN3481 for air. Confirm the airline. Charge the packs on or off the chair. A spare pair extends the day.

Top speed is 3.7 mph (6.0 km/h). Indoor and outdoor profiles sit on the controller. The app (iOS and Android) sets Base, Standard, or Max. Cruise, terrain adjustment, and hill control are built in. Flip to free-roll when you want a plain manual push. Slope on the brochure is 6 degrees.

How it attaches and what it fits

The M90 uses a standard quick-release axle once the chair-specific brackets are on. There are no hanging wires. Keep the tires and handrims you already like, as long as the handrims are tab-mount in a standard or wide stance. Narrow rims are a no-go.

The July 2026 compatibility guide is the fit rule. 24 inch (540 mm) wheels only. Hardware flattens camber to zero. Casters of any size work; 5 inch or larger is recommended. Transit brackets may move inside the axle plate. The controller needs 1.2 inches (30 mm) of frame. Live chairs on the Sunrise matrix include the Quickie 2, the Nitrum, the 5R, the QRi, and the QS5 X (not at a 19.5 inch rear seat height). The Canada FAQ still says non-Sunrise frames are coming. We will not guess a chair that is not on the guide.

M90 or Xtender

The M90 is the 26 lb (12 kg) 24 inch hub set with a toggle and a handrim mode. The Xtender is the 35 to 37 lb handrim-only pair Sunrise lists for Quickie 2, 5R, GP, Nitrum, and Zippie X'CAPE. The R90 leaves your wheels alone and pushes from under the seat. The F35 pulls from the front.

Funding help for a power assist device in Ontario

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) lists power add-ons for manual wheelchairs among its funded mobility devices. ADP can fund 75% of the cost of a qualifying power assist device when it is prescribed through an assessment by an ADP-registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist with an eligible wheelchair, and some income-support programs cover the full client share. Not every device or situation qualifies, so talk to us before you buy. March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs can also help. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through.

Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA

Westin's own team delivers and sets up this power assist device across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area after the assessment and the fit to the chair are in place. We bring it in, fit the hubs, and show you the dual controller, the free-roll switch, and the charger before we leave.

We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a device first. For a scheduled in-home setup, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works. Same-day delivery is offered through our hospital bed rental service; purchased devices are delivered and set up on a scheduled date.

If the device is going outside the GTA, ask us for a freight quote. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery (bring-in, unwrap, test, take packaging away) is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.
