Description
The Quickie Xtender is Sunrise Medical's power-assist wheel set for a manual wheelchair. Westin Healthcare fits it to a compatible Quickie or Zippie frame for homes in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. This is not a power wheelchair and it is not an off-the-shelf cart item. An occupational therapist or physiotherapist assesses first. Then Westin orders the wheels on Sunrise's form to match the chair.
Sunrise's Canada page lists a 265 lb (120 kg) rating, a top speed of 3.7 mph (6.0 km/h), and a range of 14 to 22 miles (22.5 to 35.4 km). The pair weighs 37 lbs (16.8 kg) off the chair with the lithium pack, or 35 lbs (15.9 kg) with the nickel pack. The rider still pushes the handrims. The motors add force.
Who these wheels are for
The Quickie Xtender is for a person who wants to keep a manual chair, still steer with the handrims, and get help on longer pushes, hills, and uneven arm strength. Sunrise names hemiplegia, paraplegia, quadriplegia, and tetraplegia as groups that may benefit from the synchronized wheels. The clinic decides if the person has the hand function to steer and stop.
If you want power-chair-style control without replacing a manual frame, start with the Empulse M90. If a caregiver pushes a folding or tilt chair, see the Empulse R20.
- Handrim-driven power-assist wheels, not a joystick chair
- Quick-release, so the chair can roll as a manual when the wheels are off
- Sunrise lists Quickie 2, 5R, GP, Nitrum, and Zippie X'CAPE; QRi through Built-4-Me
Range, speed, and batteries
The Quickie Xtender travels 14 to 22 miles (22.5 to 35.4 km) per charge on Sunrise's Canada table. Lithium sits at the heavier, longer end of that band. Nickel sits at the lighter, shorter end. Sunrise does not print a single km figure for each pack on the Canada page, so we keep the official 14 to 22 mile range.
Top speed is 3.7 mph (6.0 km/h). Rollback Prevention helps on climbs. Downhill Speed Control steadies the descent. There is no programming step on the Canada page. The left and right wheels talk to each other so a weaker arm does not pull the chair off line.
How it attaches and what it fits
The Xtender replaces the manual rear wheels. Quick-release axles take the whole wheel assembly on and off. Sunrise's current US page names these frames: Quickie 2, 5R, GP Series, Nitrum, and Zippie X'CAPE. Quickie QRi is a Built-4-Me fit. The official chooser table lists 22 inch or 24 inch wheels. Not every rigid or folding chair is on that list.
Live chairs we already configure include the Quickie 2 and the Quickie QXi. This wave also covers the Nitrum, the 5R, and the Zippie X'CAPE.
Quickie Xtender specifications
These figures are for the Quickie Xtender Westin orders from Sunrise's current Canada page and the matching US spec table. The specification tab holds the stored values.
User weight 265 lbs (120 kg). Range 14 to 22 miles (22.5 to 35.4 km). Top speed 3.7 mph (6.0 km/h). Weight off the chair 37 lbs (16.8 kg) with lithium or 35 lbs (15.9 kg) with nickel. Wheel sizes Sunrise prints for this model are 22 inch and 24 inch. Attachment is a pair of motorized quick-release rear wheels.
Sunrise's Canada FAQ prints one year on the Xtender battery. Coverage for the rest of the device may vary by province. Westin Healthcare processes the claim.
Xtender, M90, or a pull device
The Xtender is a wheel add-on you drive with the handrims. The Empulse M90 is also a wheel add-on, at 26 lbs (12 kg), with an all-way toggle if handrim steering is too much. The Empulse F35 and the StreetJet pull from the front and grow the chair's footprint. The Empulse R90 pushes from under the seat. The clinic matches the device to the frame and to the person's hands.
Funding help for a power assist device in Ontario
Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) lists power add-ons for manual wheelchairs among its funded mobility devices. ADP can fund 75% of the cost of a qualifying power assist device when it is prescribed through an assessment by an ADP-registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist with an eligible wheelchair, and some income-support programs cover the full client share. Not every device or situation qualifies, so talk to us before you buy. March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs can also help. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through.
Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA
Westin's own team delivers and sets up this power assist device across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area after the assessment and the fit to the chair are in place. We bring it in, fit the wheels, and show you the charger and the quick-release before we leave.
We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a device first. For a scheduled in-home setup, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works. Same-day delivery is offered through our hospital bed rental service; purchased devices are delivered and set up on a scheduled date.
If the device is going outside the GTA, ask us for a freight quote. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery (bring-in, unwrap, test, take packaging away) is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.

Frequently asked questions
What Is The Quickie Xtender?
The Quickie Xtender is a pair of motorized rear wheels that replace the manual wheels on a compatible Quickie or Zippie frame. The rider still uses the handrims. The motors add force.
How Far Will The Quickie Xtender Go On One Charge?
The Quickie Xtender travels 14 to 22 miles (22.5 to 35.4 km) per charge on Sunrise's Canada table. Lithium and nickel packs sit at different ends of that band. Terrain and rider weight change the day.
Which Wheelchairs Take The Xtender?
Sunrise names the Quickie 2, 5R, GP Series, Nitrum, and Zippie X'CAPE. The Quickie QRi is a Built-4-Me fit. We will not guess a non-listed frame from a photo.
Does The Person Still Push The Handrims?
Yes. The Quickie Xtender multiplies the push on the handrims. It is not a joystick power chair. The person still steers and stops with the rims.
How Much Weight Do The Wheels Add?
The Quickie Xtender pair weighs 37 lbs (16.8 kg) off the chair with the lithium battery, or 35 lbs (15.9 kg) with the nickel battery. That is the off-chair figure Sunrise prints.
Can I Take The Xtender Off For A Car?
Yes. The Quickie Xtender uses quick-release wheels. Sunrise says the chair then stores and transports like a manual wheelchair. Plan for the extra 35 to 37 lbs if the wheels travel with you.
Does ADP Cover A Power Assist Device In Ontario?
Some Ontario funding routes can help with mobility equipment, depending on the person's situation and assessment. A device bought before approval is not reimbursed. Call (905) 451-7743 or use the funding page before you order.
How Is This Different From The Empulse M90?
The Quickie Xtender is driven only from the handrims and weighs 35 to 37 lbs off the chair. The Empulse M90 is a 26 lb (12 kg) 24 inch wheel-drive with an all-way toggle as well as a handrim mode.
What Is The Weight Capacity?
The Quickie Xtender is rated at 265 lbs (120 kg). Stay at or under that rating.
What Is The Warranty?
Sunrise prints one year on the Xtender battery. Other coverage may vary by province. Westin Healthcare processes the claim.
