Description

The Prism Phantom Back is a Future Mobility rigid wheelchair back support in a 7 in (18 cm) shell for active users. Westin Healthcare fits widths from 12 to 18 in in Brampton and across the Greater Toronto Area.

Future Mobility built this back for rigid frames without push handles, to replace sling upholstery and leave the shoulders free. Hardware sets height along the posts, angle 15 degrees either way, and a small width range so the shell can sit on canes that are not exactly the labelled size.

Who this back support is for

This rigid wheelchair back support is for an active person at or under 250 lb (113 kg) who needs pelvic-region support and as much upper-body room as a 7 in shell allows. Families usually call us when the person pushes a rigid chair and finds a tall back in the way of the stroke.

If you need a taller thoracic shell with laterals, start with the Prism Ultra Back or the Prism Air Back. If you want straps instead of a rigid pelvic shell, see the Prism Adjustable Tension Backrest.

  • 7 in (18 cm) pelvic shell on a rigid frame
  • Widths 12-18 in (30-46 cm)
  • Angle, height, and a 3/4 in width range on the hardware

Fit, angle, and hardware

Standard clamps fit 1 in (25 mm) tubing. Spacers are included for 7/8 in (22 mm) and 3/4 in (19 mm) posts. Slotted holes give 3 in (76 mm) of height travel in 1 in steps so the shell can clear a cross brace. Angle is infinite inside 15 degrees anterior and 15 degrees posterior.

Future Mobility prints a 3/4 in (19 mm) width range. A 16 in back, for example, fits a frame from 15-3/4 in to 16-1/2 in. Seat depth behind the posts is about 1-1/4 in with the standard set, up to 2-1/2 in at 15 degrees anterior, and 0 in at 15 degrees posterior. A custom spacer can put the shell up to 2 in in front of the posts. A pocket sits on the rear of the cover. A seating therapist should set the first angle and depth.

Prism Phantom Back specifications

These figures are Future Mobility's Phantom brochure and August 2024 Canada order form. The specification tab holds the stored values. Use the brochure when they fight.

Capacity 250 lb (113 kg). Product weight 2.5 lb (1.1 kg) at 16 in W x 7 in H (41 x 18 cm). Widths 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18 in, all 7 in high. Warranty for the original purchaser: 3 years limited on the back, 90 days on the cover, 1 year on the hardware.

Sizes and options

Use Choose Cushion Size for 12x7 through 18x7 in. That is the full Phantom size list on Future Mobility's Canada form. Ask us if the chair needs the custom depth spacer.

Phantom, Ultra, or Tension

The Prism Phantom Back is the low active shell. The Prism Basic Back and Prism Ultra Back are taller foam shells for everyday postural support. The Prism Adjustable Tension Backrest keeps the canes and uses straps instead of a rigid panel.

Funding help for a wheelchair cushion or back support in Ontario

This cushion or back support is an ADP positioning device category item. Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) can fund 75% of the cost of positioning devices such as cushions and back supports when they are prescribed through an assessment by an ADP-registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist with an eligible mobility device, and some income-support programs cover the full cost. Not every product qualifies, so talk to us before you buy. March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs can also help. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through.

Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA

Westin's own team delivers this wheelchair back support across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. We bring it in, fit the clamps when the hardware allows, and show you the angle and height set before we leave.

We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a back support first. For a scheduled in-home setup, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works. Same-day delivery is offered through our hospital bed rental service; purchased seating is delivered on a scheduled date.

This back support is smaller than a hospital bed. If it is going outside the GTA, ask us about parcel or freight shipping. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery (bring-in, unwrap, test, take packaging away) is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.

Service and warranty

When something on the back support needs work, you call the shop that set it up, not a distant parts desk. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department. Our technicians come to the home or workplace.

Future Mobility manufacturer warranty

Future Mobility Healthcare warrants the Prism Phantom Back to the original purchaser for 3 years limited on the back, 90 days on the cover, and 1 year on the hardware, under normal use. Wear, misuse, and unauthorised changes sit outside that term. We handle the warranty claim with you. Ask us if an extended warranty is offered for your order.

Frequently asked questions

What Size Wheelchair Back Do I Need?

The Prism Phantom Back is sold in 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18 in widths, all 7 in high. Match the labelled width to the rigid chair's cane width. Hardware then trims about 3/4 in.

Does ADP Cover Wheelchair Cushions?

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program can fund qualifying seating through an authorizer assessment. A specific Phantom size is not guaranteed. Call (905) 451-7743 or use the funding page before you buy.

Will the Phantom Back Fit a Folding Chair With Push Handles?

The Prism Phantom Back is made for rigid frames without push handles. If your chair folds and has push handles, ask us about the Prism Basic Back or the Adjustable Tension Backrest instead.

What Is the Weight Capacity of the Prism Phantom Back?

The Prism Phantom Back is rated at 250 lb (113 kg). Stay at or under that rating.

How Much Does the Prism Phantom Back Weigh?

The Prism Phantom Back weighs 2.5 lb (1.1 kg) at 16 in by 7 in on Future Mobility's brochure.

How Much Angle Does the Phantom Allow?

The Prism Phantom Back hardware allows up to 15 degrees anterior and 15 degrees posterior relative to the back posts, infinitely inside that range.

What Tubing Does the Hardware Fit?

The Prism Phantom Back clamps fit 1 in (25 mm) posts. Spacers are included for 7/8 in (22 mm) and 3/4 in (19 mm) tubing.

Is There a Pocket on the Phantom Back?

The Prism Phantom Back has a pocket on the rear of the cover for small personal items.

What Is the Warranty on the Prism Phantom Back?

Future Mobility prints 3 years limited on the Prism Phantom Back shell, 90 days on the cover, and 1 year on the hardware, for the original purchaser.

Does a 7 Inch Back Give Trunk Support?

The Prism Phantom Back is a 7 in pelvic shell. Future Mobility describes pelvic-region support for an active user, not a tall thoracic back. If the therapist wants thoracic laterals, look at Ultra, Air, or Max instead.
