Description
The Span America Integrated 4 Inch Bed Extender Kit MC7 and MC9, Factory Installed (manufacturer code Q6785) is the Savaria Patient Care kit that takes a Span bed's sleep surface from 76 or 80 inches out to 84 inches. Span prints the 84 inch sleep surface in its specification panels with the footnote "Requires the 4 inch Bed Extender Kit", so this is not an aftermarket idea; it is the manufacturer's own route to a longer bed. Westin Healthcare specifies, supplies and services Span beds in Brampton and across the Greater Toronto Area.
This is the factory code. It goes on a new bed order and the bed is built at 84 inches, tested and shipped that way, with nothing to fit on site. To lengthen a bed that is already in a room, order the field version instead, Q6784.
Longer is not wider: read this first
This is the single most common ordering mistake on a Span bed, and it is worth thirty seconds.
- An extender makes the bed longer. Sleep surface goes from 76 in or 80 in to 84 in (2134 mm). Overall length with head and foot boards goes to 90 in (2286 mm), excluding the bumper. That is what Q6785 does.
- An expander makes the bed wider. On the Encore and the Advantage ReadyWide, the ReadyWide width expanders are already fitted as standard equipment: Span's owner manuals list "Bed Expanders Standard (Weight: 31 lb, included in base bed weight)" and the beds expand to 39 in and 42 in sleep surface with a push button. If you want a wider bed, you already own the mechanism and you do not need this kit.
If the person in the bed is tall, you want the extender. If the person in the bed is broad, you want the width expansion the bed already has. If you need both, the manuals cover that too: when expanders and extenders are both present, "the extender's end tubes must be adjusted in or out, using the spring button, to correspond to the expander width".
Which beds this fits
- Encore MC9 series. The Encore brochure and the Encore product codes table print "Q6785 4 inch Bed extender kit - factory installed", and the Encore specification panel prints the 84 in sleep surface with the extender footnote.
- Weigh Scale MC7WS series. The Weigh Scale brochure item code table is the one Span document that prints both codes in this pair, Q6785 and Q6784, side by side.
- Advantage ReadyWide MC7 series. The ReadyWide brochure prints the factory code as "Extender Kit (Plus model)". That Plus qualifier does not appear on the Encore or Weigh Scale lines, or in the Savaria 2026 pricelist, which lists this option for MC7 and MC9. If your bed is a ReadyWide Standard rather than a Plus, tell us and we will confirm the code with Savaria before ordering.
- Not this part: the Advantage QD1000 Q-Series, whose extender is a separate code and whose sleep surface lengths are 76 in and 80 in only, and the Rexx QD2000.
The beds this belongs to are the Span Encore package, the ReadyWide MC7 range, and the Span Weigh Scale bed. The Span Advantage Q-Series and the Span Rexx take different parts. Call (905) 451-7743 with the model and serial number from the bed label and we will confirm before anything ships.
One check that saves money. If the bed was ordered with an 84 inch sleep surface in the first place, the extender is already in it and you do not buy it twice. If you are not sure, the board mounting channels tell you: Span's manuals say hole pair A is 76 inches, pair B is 80 inches, and pair C is 84 inches and requires the extender option. Look at which pair your boards are bolted through.
Span 4 inch bed extender specifications
The figures below come from the Span owner manuals for the Encore MC9R and the Advantage ReadyWide MC7 and from the brochure specification panels. Span publishes a weight for the 4 inch bed extender option and the bed dimensions it produces. It does not publish a parts count, a material or a finish for the kit, and we will not invent one.

One thing worth keeping in mind on every Span accessory. Span states in both owner manuals that the safe working load includes the weight of accessories, options and bedding, not just the person in the bed. The Encore MC9 is rated at 600 lb (272 kg) safe working load with a maximum patient weight of 450 lb (204 kg). The Advantage ReadyWide MC7 Standard is rated at 500 lb (227 kg) safe working load with a maximum patient weight of 350 lb (159 kg), and the ReadyWide Plus is rated at 650 lb (295 kg). Every option you bolt on uses part of that allowance, so it is worth totalling the build rather than adding parts one at a time.
What else changes when the bed gets longer
Three things move with the sleep surface, and it is cheaper to plan them than to discover them.
- The mattress. An 84 inch sleep surface needs an 84 inch mattress. Span's own accessories table asks for a "proper sized mattress with special firm borders to prevent patients from being trapped between the mattress and rail" and tells you to ask the manufacturer for sizing recommendations. Tell us the bed length and the surface you are on and we will size it with you from our mattress range.
- The entrapment picture. Span's warning is blunt: "POSSIBLE INJURY OR DEATH Use only the proper size mattress and extension pads in order to minimize the entrapment Zone gaps." Span also states that the healthcare facility is responsible for compliance with the entrapment guidelines by matching the right components and accessories to the right bed. A longer frame with a short mattress is exactly the gap those guidelines exist to close.
- The room. Overall length goes to 90 inches with boards, and that figure excludes the bumper. Measure the wall to door run before the bed grows, particularly if the bed also carries head end roller bumpers.
Savaria also lists a bed extender storage kit as a separate option, for facilities that fit extenders to some beds and want somewhere to keep the parts when a bed goes back to 80 inches. Ask us if that is your situation.
Ordering in Brampton and the GTA
This is the factory code, so there is nothing to fit on site. It is a line on the bed order and it arrives built in and tested. Westin Healthcare's own team delivers and sets up Span beds across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area: we bring the bed in, assemble it in the room, test every function and show you the hand pendant and the foot end controller before we leave. We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a bed first. Orders travel by standard parcel or freight depending on the equipment, and White Glove Delivery is available for eligible products in Toronto and the GTA, as set out on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order. Call (905) 451-7743 or use the contact page to get the build sheet right the first time.
Service, repairs, and warranty

Span manufacturer warranty
Span Medical Products Canada warrants all beds and bed accessories sold by Span to be free from defects in workmanship and materials under normal and proper use and service from the date of initial delivery. Bed accessories carry one year and parts subject to wear carry one year, which is the row this part sits in. Electrical components, meaning the control box and all actuators, carry five years. The frame carries fifteen years and all welds on steel structural components carry fifteen years. Labour for service is not part of the manufacturer warranty, and the warranty does not apply where a product has been abused, misused, improperly maintained, exposed to excessive loads, or altered without Span's approval. Span also states plainly that using replacement parts or accessories from other manufacturers will invalidate the warranty and could damage the bed, so a generic substitute is a false economy on a Span bed. We handle the claim with you.

Frequently asked questions
What is the manufacturer code?
Q6785. Savaria prints the extender pair in the SPAN Weigh Scale brochure item code table, and prints the factory code again in the SPAN Encore brochure, the Encore product codes table and the SPAN ReadyWide brochure.
How much longer does the bed get?
Four inches of sleep surface, taking it to 84 in (2134 mm). Overall length with head and foot boards becomes 90 in (2286 mm), excluding the bumper.
Will this make the bed wider?
No. Width is a different mechanism and it is already standard on these beds. The Encore and Advantage ReadyWide come with ReadyWide expanders fitted, listed in the owner manuals as standard equipment at 31 lb included in the base bed weight, and they expand the sleep surface to 39 in and 42 in with a push button.
Do I need a new mattress?
Yes, if your current one is sized for a 76 or 80 inch surface. Span asks for a proper sized mattress with firm borders and requires extension pads to control entrapment gaps. Tell us the configuration and we will size it with you.
Do my existing boards still fit?
The board mounting channels are drilled for all three lengths: pair A at 76 inches, pair B at 80 inches, pair C at 84 inches with the extender option. Confirm the board set with us when you order, and we will check it against your build rather than assume.
Should I order the field kit or the factory kit?
Factory, built into the bed before it ships Savaria offers the option both ways, so the answer is simply whether the bed exists yet. Factory, this code, if the bed has not been built. Field, Q6784, if the bed is already in a room.
How do I know the bed does not already have it?
Check which hole pair the boards are bolted through, or measure the sleep surface. If it is already 84 inches, the extender is in the bed. If you send us the model and serial number we will confirm from the build record.
What is the warranty?
One year. Span bed accessories and parts subject to wear both carry one year in the manufacturer's warranty table. The frame and the welds carry fifteen years, but this kit sits in the accessories row. Labour for service is not part of the manufacturer warranty.
