Handicare Dual Access Sling

The Handicare Dual Access Sling is a polyester toileting sling with a large commode opening. It is designed to be used from a sitting position with a patient lift or a Stand Aid, and with a ceiling lift or a sit-to-stand lift. Lower garments can be removed and replaced while the person stays supported. Westin Healthcare quotes the family in Brampton and fits it across the Greater Toronto Area.

This is a loop sling. Colour-coded elastic loops seat on a Handicare or Savaria carry bar. It does not use clip or E-clip fasteners. If the carry bar is a Human Care mushroom fastener, see the Human Care Full Body Sling E-clip instead.

Who this sling is for

The Dual Access Sling is for a person who needs a seated toileting or hygiene transfer and who has enough trunk control for this cut. It supports the thighs, the mid-to-lower back, and the torso. Apply it from a chair or wheelchair. It is not a leave-in-place sling, and it is not a full-seat transfer sling.

What you get

You get one Dual Access Sling in the article on your quote. The body is durable polyester with an antimicrobial coating. Divided, padded leg supports go under the thighs and can be applied and removed while the person is seated. The back is a V-shaped, boned, padded panel with a non-slip surface and a plastic stay. A hook-and-loop chest band with a 2 in adjustable buckle closes around the torso. Colour-coded elastic loops hook to the carry bar. A lift is sold separately.

The seat has a large commode opening. The cut-away under the arms helps keep pressure off that area. Side retention straps come only on the 8C0x00 articles. That hip strap is not designed to bear weight. Use the same colour loop on both sides. For an upright sit, use the short loops at the shoulders and the long loops at the legs. Cross the leg straps by passing one strap through the loop at the base of the other.

Sizing

Handicare prints an inch chart and a safe working load for each size. Child is XXS and Junior is XS. Confirm the size with a clinician or our staff before first use.

Safe working load is 450 lb (204 kg) on Child and Junior, 625 lb (283 kg) on Small, Medium, and Large, and 1000 lb (454 kg) on Extra Large. Fabric is polyester with an antimicrobial coating. Attachment is loop. Medium 8B0400 is 37 in long and 38 in at the upper width. The seat has a large commode opening. Expected lifetime is up to 4 years, depending on use, care, and laundering. Inspect loops, belt, seams, and fabric after every wash and discard the sling if you find tears or serious defects.

Care and laundering

Put the sling in a washing bag before it goes in the washer, so the agitator does not wear the loops or fabric. Wash at 80 C (176 F). Follow the tag on the sling you receive. The sling is made for routine laundering and tumble drying. Inspect fabric, seams, buckle, stay, and loops after every wash. Compare it to a new sling if you are unsure.

The Dual Access Sling is a loop sling. Colour-coded elastic loops seat on a Handicare or Savaria carry bar. It does not use clip fasteners and it does not use Human Care E-clips.

It is designed to be used from a sitting position with a patient lift or a Stand Aid, and with a ceiling lift or a sit-to-stand lift. Handicare states that its loop slings fit its complete range of carry bars. On our floor that is the Handicare C450, the Handicare C625, the Handicare A450, the Handicare AP300 portable motor, the Savaria M-Series ceiling lift, and the two-point SlingBar on the Handicare Carina 350. The finished transfer is limited by the lowest rating among the lift, the bar, and the sling. A Carina 350 transfer stays inside 350 lb even though Extra Large is 1000 lb. Do not put this sling on a Human Care mushroom bar.

Does it fit a C450, A450, or Carina 350?

Yes. Those Handicare motors use loop carry-bar hooks. It also fits the C625, the AP300, and the Savaria M-Series ceiling lift. It does not fit a Human Care E-clip bar. A Carina 350 transfer stays inside 350 lb.

Does it have a commode opening?

Yes. The seat has a large opening so clothing can be removed and replaced while the person stays supported, for toilet, commode, and tub transfers. The person needs enough trunk control for this cut.

Can it stay under the person after the transfer?

No. This sling is polyester only and is not suitable to leave under the client. Take it off after the transfer.

What do the side retention straps do?

They are the optional 8C0x00 hip straps. Fasten the buckle and adjust the tension after the carry bar just tensions the lifting straps. That hip strap is not designed to bear weight.

How do I apply it?

Apply it from a seated position. Lean the person forward, tuck the sling behind them with the tag on the outside and the bottom edge just above the tailbone, fasten the chest band, pass the padded legs under the thighs, cross the leg straps through the base loop, then hook the same colour loops to the carry bar. Short loops at the shoulders and long loops at the legs give an upright sit.

How do I wash it?

Put it in a laundry bag and wash at 80 C (176 F). Follow the sling tag. Inspect loops, buckle, stay, and seams after every wash.

Does funding cover a sling in Ontario?
