Description
The Spex Standard Back is Sunrise Medical's Classic-cube wheelchair back support for most upper-torso needs in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. Cubes can be changed on the spot when the person's shape changes.
This is a quote-only configured back. Rectangle, T, and Surface shells sit differently on the canes. Hardware is still a separate line.
Who this back is for
The Spex Standard Back fits a person whose seating therapist wants Spex cubes without stepping up to SuperShape's triple layer. A seating therapist should confirm the shell style. This page does not give clinical positioning advice.
- Classic contouring cubes through a top zipper
- Rectangle, T, or Surface shell
- 200 / 300 lb (90 / 136 kg) bands on the CA card
Shell styles and cubes
Sunrise prints three Spex Standard Back shapes. Rectangle sits between the wheelchair canes. T sits in front of the canes. Surface also sits in front of the canes and adds more support at the shoulder and pelvis. Cubes come out through the top of the cover. The dual-layer cover with air-mesh sides is how Sunrise talks about shear and moisture. The shell is ventilated aluminium.
Mount hardware
Shell style is not the same thing as mount hardware. Rectangle, T, and Surface change where the shell sits. Single, Dual, or Quad mounts still have to match the cane diameter. The Spex back owner's manual prints round canes from 0.75 inch (19 mm) to 1 inch (26 mm).
Spex Standard Back specifications
These figures are from Sunrise Medical's current Canadian Standard Back card. The specification tab holds the stored values.

Which Spex wheelchair back support
Stay with the Spex Standard Back if Classic cubes and a choice of Rectangle, T, or Surface is the brief. The Spex Comfi Back is the simpler auto-contour step. The Spex Manta Classic Back is the wraparound NEW back. The Spex SuperShape Back is the triple-layer step.
Funding help for a wheelchair cushion or back support in Ontario
This cushion or back support is an ADP positioning device category item. Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) can fund 75% of the cost of positioning devices such as cushions and back supports when they are prescribed through an assessment by an ADP-registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist with an eligible mobility device, and some income-support programs cover the full cost. Not every product qualifies, so talk to us before you buy. March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs can also help. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through.
