Which length do I need? Match the overlay to the mattress already on the bed, not to the person: 72 in for a 72 in mattress, 80 in for an 80 in mattress. Span America publishes no weight limit for this overlay, so tell Westin Healthcare the person's weight and we will confirm it with Savaria before the order goes through.

Description

The Span America Pressure Kair is a foam mattress overlay for preventing pressure injuries in people at low to moderate risk. It lies on top of the mattress that is already on the bed. Westin Healthcare supplies it across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area and will match the length to the bed before you order.

The foam is channel cut side to side and then sliced head to foot, which turns a single slab into a field of individual support cells. Each cell can compress on its own, so the surface follows the shape of the body instead of pushing back against it in one flat plane.

Who the Pressure Kair is for

Span America positions the Pressure Kair in its preventative overlays group, for pressure injury prevention in low to moderate risk patients. That is the honest ceiling for this product, and it matters:

  • Low to moderate risk, skin intact. An overlay like this is the right first step, and it is the least disruptive: the existing mattress stays on the bed.
  • Moderate to high risk. Step up to the Geo-Matt Overlay, which Span America positions for that band.
  • An existing pressure injury being treated. An overlay is not the surface for that. Ask us about a replacement therapeutic mattress such as the Geo-Mattress Plus and bring the skin assessment with you.

If you are not sure which band the person is in, call (905) 451-7743 and tell us what the assessment says. Getting this step right is cheaper than getting it wrong.

Zones, and why they are there

The overlay is divided into distinct head, torso and foot zones. The three areas of the body load the surface very differently: the torso carries most of the weight, the heels concentrate pressure into a small area, and the head and shoulders need support without being pushed forward. Zoning lets one piece of foam respond appropriately in all three places rather than averaging across the whole body.

The Soft Skin sleeve

Both Pressure Kair codes ship with the Span America Soft Skin sleeve fitted. Span America describes it as protecting the overlay, being vapour permeable but resistant to liquids, and not interfering with support surface function. In practice that means the foam is protected from fluids while moisture vapour still moves away from the skin, and the cover does not stiffen the surface underneath the person.

Sizes

Use the selector to pick the length on your quote. Two are listed, both 34 in wide and 3.5 in high:

  • 34 x 72 x 3.5 in with Soft Skin (SP789-000)
  • 34 x 80 x 3.5 in with Soft Skin (SP889-000)

Match the length to the mattress that is already on the bed, not to the person. A 72 in overlay on an 80 in mattress leaves the feet off the therapeutic surface, which is exactly where heel pressure is a problem. Send us the mattress size and we will confirm which one to quote.

Span America prints these two codes as 4 per case. The unit of sale is confirmed on your quote, so tell us how many overlays you need and we will make it explicit.

Span America does not print a weight limit or a warranty term for the Pressure Kair in its catalogue, so neither is stated here. If the person is heavy, or if you need the warranty terms in writing before you order, call (905) 451-7743 and we will get both confirmed with Savaria first.

Funding help for a therapeutic mattress overlay in Ontario

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) does not cover hospital beds or mattresses, so plan around other routes. Funding that may help instead: March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through before you buy.

Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA

Westin's own team delivers across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather feel an overlay before you commit. Call (905) 451-7743 or use the contact page and tell us the mattress size and what the skin assessment says. Shipping terms are described on the shipping policy page, and any charge is confirmed on your order.

Service and replacement

Foam overlays are wear items. Replace one when the foam has taken a set, when the cells no longer spring back, or when the Soft Skin sleeve is damaged. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department for the beds and lifts these surfaces work alongside, and we can put a replacement on the same account. Ask us for the Savaria terms that ship with your order.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Pressure Kair replace the mattress?

No. It is an overlay. It goes on top of the mattress that is already on the bed, which is what makes it the least disruptive option when the risk is low to moderate.

What weight can a Pressure Kair take?

Span America does not print a weight limit for either code in its catalogue, so we will not invent one. Tell us the person's weight and we will confirm the figure with Savaria before your order goes through.

Which length should I order?

Match the mattress, not the person: 72 in for a 72 in mattress and 80 in for an 80 in mattress. If the overlay is shorter than the mattress the heels end up off the therapeutic surface, and heels are one of the most common sites for a pressure injury.

What is the Soft Skin sleeve?

It is Span America's cover for its foam overlays. Span America describes it as protecting the overlay, vapour permeable but resistant to liquids, and not interfering with support surface function. Both Pressure Kair codes include it.

How is this different from an eggcrate pad?

Convoluted or eggcrate pads are recognized for comfort, not pressure management, and Span America says so in its own catalogue. The Pressure Kair is cut into individual support cells and zoned for the body, and it sits in the manufacturer's preventative overlays group. If comfort is the goal, look at the convoluted overlays instead.

How is this different from the Geo-Matt Overlay?

Risk band. Span America positions the Pressure Kair for low to moderate risk and the Geo-Matt Overlay for moderate to high risk. If the assessment puts the person at high risk, go to the Geo-Matt or to a replacement mattress.

Can it be cleaned?

The Soft Skin sleeve is what takes the cleaning; it is resistant to liquids. Follow the instructions that ship with the overlay and the infection control policy in your setting, and take the overlay out of service if the sleeve is torn.

Is it sold singly or by the case?

Span America prints 4 per case for both codes. Tell us how many you need and the unit of sale will be stated explicitly on your quote.
