Description

The Prism Air Back is a Future Mobility wheelchair back support with individual air bladders for lumbar and lateral support. Westin Healthcare fits it in Brampton and across the Greater Toronto Area after a seating check.

Future Mobility designed this back for people who need moderate to moderately complex postural support. A 5052 aluminum shell, quick-release cane clamps, and a hose long enough to reach the pump sit behind a stretch cover with a pocket for the valves. Sizes include stock, non-stock, and custom widths. Ask us if you need a height or width that is not on Choose Cushion Size.

Who this back support is for

This air wheelchair back support is for a person whose therapist wants a rigid shell plus air they can add or release at the lumbar and sides, at or under 250 lb (113 kg) on standard widths or 350 lb (159 kg) on bariatric widths. Families usually call us when the person already uses a manual or power wheelchair and needs more side support than a sling or a flat foam back.

If you want 6 in laterals without air, start with the Prism Ultra Back. If the therapist wants removable foam cubes instead of bladders, see the Prism Truefitt Back. For a low active shell, see the Prism Phantom Back.

  • Moderate to moderately complex postural support, as Future Mobility states it
  • Air laterals and lumbar the therapist can set with the person in the chair
  • Quick-release hardware that comes off the canes for folding or transfer

Air bladders, cover, and hardware

Each bladder has its own valve. Future Mobility prints a hose long enough for the person to reach the pump. A pocket on the cover hides the valves. The cover is a 4-way stretch outer; an infection-control cover is the other factory option. The user manual says the cover helps protect the foam if the person is incontinent, and the back should not be used without its cover.

Cane-clamp hardware is included. Clamps fit 1 in (25 mm) back posts. Inserts are supplied for 7/8 in (22 mm) posts, and the brochure also lists 3/4 in (19 mm) tubing. The silver flip releases the shell. Three Allen screws set height on the canes. Angle is 15 degrees forward and 20 degrees back, with a 5 in (127 mm) forward and rear range. Pins take up to 2 in (51 mm) of seat-width difference.

A seating therapist should set the air and the angle. We do not give clinical positioning advice. Ask the seating therapist.

Prism Air Back specifications

These figures are Future Mobility's current Air brochure and Canada order form. The specification tab holds the stored values. Use the brochure when they fight.

Capacity 250 lb (113 kg) on standard widths, 350 lb (159 kg) on bariatric widths. Product weight 5.7 lb (2.6 kg) at 18 in W x 18 in H (46 x 46 cm); 7.3 lb (3.3 kg) bariatric. Shell 5052 aluminum. Warranty for the original purchaser: 3 years limited on the back, 90 days on the cover, 1 year on the hardware.

Sizes and options

Use Choose Cushion Size for the width and height pair you need. Future Mobility's stock Air sizes are 16, 18, and 20 in wide by 16 or 20 in high. Non-stock sizes include 14x14, 16x18, 17x16, 17x20, 18x18, 19x16, 19x20, and 20x18. Custom Air sizes go up to 20 in wide and down to 11 in high. Bariatric widths run 21-24 in. If the pair you need is not listed, ask us. We confirm the chair's cane width and the therapist's height before we order a custom shell.

Prism Basic, Ultra, Air, or Truefitt

The Prism Basic Back is the mild-to-moderate foam shell without laterals. The Prism Ultra Back adds 6 in laterals on foam. The Prism Air Back keeps a rigid shell and adds air laterals and lumbar. The Prism Truefitt Back uses an ice-cube foam matrix the therapist can rebuild. The Prism Max Truefitt Backrest is the taller-lateral Max version of that cube back. Lunar backs in this shop are the next step up the Future Mobility ladder when the therapist wants a different shell family.

Funding help for a wheelchair cushion or back support in Ontario

This cushion or back support is an ADP positioning device category item. Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) can fund 75% of the cost of positioning devices such as cushions and back supports when they are prescribed through an assessment by an ADP-registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist with an eligible mobility device, and some income-support programs cover the full cost. Not every product qualifies, so talk to us before you buy. March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs can also help. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through.

Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA

Westin's own team delivers this wheelchair back support across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. We bring it in, fit the clamps when the hardware allows, and show you the latch and the pump before we leave.

We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a back support first. For a scheduled in-home setup, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works. Same-day delivery is offered through our hospital bed rental service; purchased seating is delivered on a scheduled date.

This back support is smaller than a hospital bed. If it is going outside the GTA, ask us about parcel or freight shipping. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery (bring-in, unwrap, test, take packaging away) is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.

Service and warranty

When something on the back support needs work, you call the shop that set it up, not a distant parts desk. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department. Our technicians come to the home or workplace.

Future Mobility manufacturer warranty

Future Mobility Healthcare warrants the Prism Air Back to the original purchaser for 3 years limited on the back, 90 days on the cover, and 1 year on the hardware, under normal use. Wear, misuse, and unauthorised changes sit outside that term. We handle the warranty claim with you. Ask us if an extended warranty is offered for your order.

Frequently asked questions

What Size Wheelchair Back Do I Need?

The Prism Air Back is ordered to the wheelchair's back-cane width and the therapist's recommended height. Measure the canes, not the old sling. Use Choose Cushion Size for a listed pair, or ask us to order a custom Air size up to 20 in (51 cm) wide.

How Do I Choose Between Gel, Foam, and Air Cushions?

The Prism Air Back is a rigid back with air laterals and lumbar, not a seat cushion. For the seat, a foam, gel, or air cushion is a separate choice the seating therapist makes. If you want air on the back instead of foam laterals, this is the Prism model that does that.

Does ADP Cover Wheelchair Cushions?

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program can fund qualifying seating through an authorizer assessment. A specific Prism Air Back size is not guaranteed. Call (905) 451-7743 or use the funding page before you buy.

What Is the Weight Capacity of the Prism Air Back?

The Prism Air Back is rated at 250 lb (113 kg) on standard widths and 350 lb (159 kg) on bariatric widths. Stay at or under the rating for the width you order.

How Much Does the Prism Air Back Weigh?

The Prism Air Back weighs 5.7 lb (2.6 kg) at 18 in by 18 in on Future Mobility's brochure, and 7.3 lb (3.3 kg) in the bariatric example.

What Tubing Does the Hardware Fit?

The Prism Air Back cane clamps fit 1 in (25 mm) back posts. Inserts are supplied for 7/8 in (22 mm). The brochure also lists 3/4 in (19 mm) tubing. Tell us the cane diameter before we order.

Can I Adjust the Air While I Am Sitting?

The Prism Air Back has a hose Future Mobility prints as long enough to reach the pump, and the hardware can be set while the person stays in the chair. A seating therapist should make the first air and angle set.

How Do I Clean the Prism Air Back?

The Prism Air Back cover washes cold on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, with no bleach or fabric softener, then air dries. Wipe the shell with a damp cloth. Do not use the back without its cover.

What Is the Warranty on the Prism Air Back?

Future Mobility prints 3 years limited on the Prism Air Back shell, 90 days on the cover, and 1 year on the hardware, for the original purchaser.

Is the Prism Air Back the Same as a ROHO Air Back?

The Prism Air Back is a Future Mobility aluminum shell with separate lumbar and lateral bladders. It is not a ROHO AGILITY back. If you were quoted a ROHO air back, ask us to match that maker instead.
