Description
The Span America Advantage Bed 4 Inch Extender Kit (manufacturer code Q6736) adds four inches of length to a Span Advantage bed. Savaria's own sheet for this bed prints the code as "4" Extender Kit" and lists "4" bed extenders to 84" length" among the ways to customize the bed. It is the answer to a resident who is taller than the bed, without buying a different bed. Westin Healthcare specifies, supplies and services Span beds in Brampton and across the Greater Toronto Area.
The Advantage comes with a sleep surface of 76 or 80 inches. Four inches sounds small until it is the four inches between a resident's heels and the foot board.
How the extender goes on
Span's owner manual for this exact bed describes it plainly: "The bed extender is designed to be attached at the foot end of the bed and is available in either a 4" tool-less or 6" bolt-on version. The extender attaches directly to the foot deck." This code is the four inch tool-less version. The manual also mentions a six inch bolt-on version, for which Savaria prints no code on the Advantage sheet, so if six inches is what you need, ask us and we will get the current code from Savaria rather than guess.
There is a second piece to it, and it is the one people forget. The manual continues: "If a foot board is to be used with the extender, then a set of board extender brackets are required to offset the foot board, and allow clearance for the extender." Without those brackets the board has nowhere to sit once the deck is longer. The 2026 Savaria range describes this kit as including the board extender brackets, which is why the pricelist line is longer than the brochure line. Tell us whether the bed has boards and we will confirm the line before the order goes out.
One point where Savaria's own documents differ: the Advantage owner manual says the extender is designed to attach at the foot end, while the 2026 Savaria range describes the kit as head or foot end. We follow the manual, which is the document written for this exact bed, and we will confirm a head end fit with Savaria in writing before quoting one. Nobody should find out on delivery day.
The mattress is not optional
A longer deck with the original mattress leaves a gap at one end, and Span is unusually direct about it. The manual prints a warning headed POSSIBLE INJURY OR DEATH: "Use only the proper size mattress and extension pads in order to minimize the Entrapment Zone gaps. The gaps must be small enough to prevent the patient from getting his/her neck caught in this location (you must read and follow the FDA Entrapment Guidelines)." The manual also states that "the mattress pad extends the actual sleep surface", which is to say the extender gives the deck four inches and the pad is what the resident actually lies on.
Quote the surface with the kit. Ours are in medical mattresses, and we will match the length before anything ships. Span puts the responsibility squarely on the facility: "Irrespective of the mattress it is the responsibility of the healthcare facility to ensure that the bed meets entrapment guidelines at the time of use and throughout the life cycle of the product."
Which beds this fits
This code is for the Span Advantage Q-Series, the QD1000 and QD1000Y builds. Span supplies a different extender code for each of its other bed platforms.
| Bed platform | 4 inch extender code |
|---|---|
| Span Advantage QD1000 | Q6736 |
| Span Rexx | Q6737 |
| Span Advantage ReadyWide MC7 and Span Encore MC9 | Q6785 factory install, Q6784 field install |
The bed label identifies the platform. If you cannot find it, call (905) 451-7743 with the model and serial number and we will identify it before anything is ordered. On our own shelf the platforms are the Advantage, the Span Encore and the Span Rexx.
Length is not width, and neither one is capacity
Span sells the three separately, and mixing them up is the most common mistake on this bed.
- This kit adds length. Q6736.
- A wider sleep surface is a different code: Q6709 takes the deck to 42 inches, and Q6633 takes it to 39 inches.
- Neither one raises the safe working load. The Advantage is rated at 500 lb (227 kg) and Span states that figure already includes the patient, the head and foot panels, the mattress, the side rails and accessories.
If the resident is both taller and wider, that is two codes on the order. If the issue is weight rather than size, call (905) 451-7743 and we will look at a different bed instead of over-optioning this one.
Everything else about the bed survives the change. The Advantage still travels from 7-7/8 inches to 30 inches, still runs 0 to 70 degrees on the back deck and 0 to 30 degrees on the knee deck, still does Comfort Chair and Trendelenburg from the foot end controller, and still moves at any height on its 3 inch total locking casters.
Span does not publish the piece count, the installed weight, the material or the extended overall length of the bed with the kit fitted, and we will not invent them. Call (905) 451-7743 and we will get the current answer from Savaria in writing before the order goes out.

Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA
Westin Healthcare's own team delivers and sets up Span beds across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. We bring the bed in, assemble it, and show you the hand pendant and the foot end controller before we leave. We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a bed first. Call (905) 451-7743 or use the contact page to book a date.
Hospital beds and bed hardware are oversized, so the Canada-wide free ground-shipping offer on smaller goods does not apply to them. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery is described on the shipping policy. If the order is going outside the GTA, ask us for a freight quote. Any charge is confirmed on your order.

The bed this kit belongs to is the Span Advantage Q-Series, with the Span Encore package and the Span Rexx alongside it, and the full range sits under long term care beds. A longer deck needs a matching surface from medical mattresses and rails that suit it from bed rails. To widen the same bed rather than lengthen it, see the 42 inch deck width expander kit. Service, repairs, and warranty
When something on the bed or an accessory needs work, you call the shop that supplied it, not a US parts desk. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department and our technicians come to the home or the workplace.
Span America manufacturer warranty
Span Medical Products Canada warrants beds and accessories against defects in workmanship and materials under normal and proper use from the date of initial delivery. Batteries, hand pendants, foot end controllers and cables carry one year, bed accessories carry one year, and parts subject to wear carry one year. Electrical components, which Span defines as the control box and the actuators, carry five years. The frame and all welds on steel structural components carry fifteen years. Labour for service is not covered by the manufacturer warranty, and warranty claims run through a Span RMA number. We handle the claim with you.
Frequently asked questions
What is the manufacturer code?
Q6736. The SPAN Advantage brochure item code table prints it as "4" Extender Kit", the 2026 Savaria range prints it as "Bed Extender 4" kit - Head or Foot End, ADVANTAGE (Includes Board Extender Brackets)", and Span's own part description reads "BED EXTENDER KIT 4" EXPANDABLE ADV".
How long is the bed once it is fitted?
Span prints "4" bed extenders to 84" length" in the Advantage brochure. The standard sleep surface is 76 or 80 inches. Savaria does not publish the extended overall length of the bed with boards fitted, so we do not quote one. If the room is tight, tell us the measurement you have to hit and we will get the figure from Savaria before you order.
Head end or foot end?
Savaria's own documents differ. The Advantage owner manual says the extender is designed to attach at the foot end and attaches directly to the foot deck. The 2026 Savaria range describes the kit as head or foot end. We follow the manual and will confirm a head end fit with Savaria in writing before quoting one.
Do I need board extender brackets as well?
If the bed has a foot board, yes. Span's manual states that a set of board extender brackets is required to offset the board and give the extender clearance. The 2026 Savaria range describes this kit as including them, so on current information you do not order them separately. Tell us whether the bed has boards and we will confirm the line before the order goes out.
Do I need a longer mattress?
Yes. Span prints a warning headed POSSIBLE INJURY OR DEATH: use only the proper size mattress and extension pads, so the entrapment zone gaps stay small enough that a resident cannot get their neck caught, and follow the FDA Entrapment Guidelines. The manual also notes that the mattress pad is what extends the actual sleep surface. Quote the surface with the kit; ours are in medical mattresses.
Is there a six inch version?
The Advantage owner manual describes a 6 inch bolt-on extender alongside the 4 inch tool-less one, but Savaria prints no code for it on the Advantage sheet. If six inches is what the resident needs, call us and we will get the current code from Savaria rather than guess.
Will this fit an Encore or a ReadyWide?
No. Span supplies a different extender code for each platform: Q6737 for the Rexx, and Q6785 factory or Q6784 field for the Advantage ReadyWide MC7 and Encore MC9. This code is for the Advantage QD1000.
Does the bed hold more weight once it is longer?
No. The Advantage safe working load is 500 lb (227 kg) and Span states that figure already includes the patient, the head and foot panels, the mattress, the side rails and accessories. If capacity rather than length is the problem, call us and we will look at a different bed.
What is the warranty?
One year. Span puts bed accessories in its one year row rather than in the five year electrical components row, which covers the control box and the actuators. Labour for service is not part of the manufacturer warranty. Our own service and repairs department handles the claim with you.
