Description
The Drive PrimeCare P503 is Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare's full-electric low long-term-care hospital bed, sold as the Prime Care P503. Westin Healthcare sells it, delivers it, and sets it up for homes and care rooms in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. The eight-function hand pendant moves the head section, the knee section, the height of the bed, and Auto-Contour.
Drive lists a 7.8 inch to 30 inch deck height, a 425 lb resident weight, and a 450 lb safe working load for the person, the mattress, the rails, and anything else on the bed. Sleep length is built into the frame at 76 inches or 80 inches. Three DC motors keep the deck level with true vertical lift. The bed rolls at any height on eight 3 inch casters.
Who this bed is for
This bed is for a person who needs a hospital-style bed at home or in a care room and wants a lower sleep deck than a standard homecare bed, with a higher working height for linen changes. The 7.8 inch low setting is the reason families and facilities pick this frame when transfers are easier closer to the floor. The same pendant still raises the bed to 30 inches so a caregiver is not working at floor height.
Families usually call us when someone is coming home from hospital, when a regular bed has become hard to get in and out of, or when a therapist has asked for a long-term-care low frame. If you want the next PrimeCare step-up, with a 550 lb capacity, 84 inch length, and optional width expansion, see the Drive PrimeCare P703. If you need a wider expandable deck and a 600 lb capacity, see the Drive PrimeCare P903. If a simpler homecare package is enough, start with the Drive Delta 1000.
- Home care, where the bed has to work in a bedroom and sit at 7.8 inches for transfers
- Long-term care, assisted living, and rehab rooms that want a 36 inch Drive PrimeCare low frame
- Anyone who needs electric head, knee, and height from one pendant, plus Auto-Contour
What you get
The Drive PrimeCare P503 is a full-electric low long-term-care bed. Three DC motors move the head, the knee, and the overall height. Drive's current sheet and the 2018 owner manual both print an eight-function handheld pendant with Auto-Contour. Auto-Contour raises the head and knee together so the person is less likely to slide when the bed is repositioned.
Drive sells item P503 as the bed frame. Headboards and footboards are Drive bed ends, ordered in Brownlee Woods or Mill Creek style. Assist rails (PLTCAR) and assist bars (PLTCAB) are Drive options, not part of the bare frame. A mattress is not part of Drive's P503 item. Call (905) 451-7743 before you order if you want ends, rails, and a surface on the same delivery.
- Eight-function hand pendant for head, knee, height, and Auto-Contour
- Three DC motors with true vertical lift and four sealed bearings
- Welded tubular steel frame and a grid sleep deck
- Adjustable mattress retainers for a 76 inch or 80 inch mattress
- Fixed wall bumper
- IV pole holders
- Eight 3 inch heavy-duty casters that roll at any height, with four locking casters and two caster guide locks
- Quick-release bed ends when those ends are on the order
There is no battery backup on the standard P503. If the power is out and no optional backup is fitted, the bed stays where it is until power returns. Ask us if you want a backup discussed with the order.
Drive PrimeCare P503 specifications
These figures are for Drive item P503, the Prime Care P503. The specification tab holds the stored values. Drive's current spec sheet lists a deck height of 7.8 inches to 30 inches, a 450 lb weight capacity, a 210 lb frame, and a warranty of 10 years on the frame, 15 years on the welds, and 2 years on electrical parts. Drive's owner manual for the same model prints a resident weight of 425 lbs and a 450 lb safe working load.
The sleep surface takes a 36 inch hospital-bed mattress in 76 inch or 80 inch length. Drive's owner manual prints mattress thickness as 5.5 inches to 7 inches, an overall bed width of 36 inches, and an overall length of 83 inches or 86 inches without the wall bumper (88 inches or 90 inches with the bumper). Head section travel is 0 to 68 degrees. Thigh travel is 0 to 30 degrees. Foot travel is 0 to 11 degrees.
Warranty for the original purchaser, printed on Drive's current P503 sheet and in the 2025 Drive DeVilbiss long-term-care catalog, is 10 years on the frame, 15 years on the welds, and 2 years on electrical parts.
Rails, mattress, and bed ends
This listing has no rail or mattress selectors on the order form. Drive designed the assist devices, bed ends, and mattress size that fit this frame. Call (905) 451-7743 before you order if you need rails, a surface, or a specific bed-end style.
Assist rails and assist bars
Drive's matching parts are the rotating assist rail PLTCAR and the rotating assist bar PLTCAB. Both are listed for the P503, the P703, and the P903. Drive's owner manual says to use rails and a mattress that fit this frame, and to keep the mattress centred so the person cannot slip into a gap. Rails are a reminder to help keep someone from rolling out. They are not a restraint. If a therapist asked for a specific rail style, call us with that note.
Mattress
The sleep surface takes a 36 inch by 76 inch or 36 inch by 80 inch hospital-bed mattress, 5.5 inches to 7 inches thick. Drive names a pressure-redistribution mattress as the compatible type. We stock Drive Gravity 7, Gravity 8, Gravity 9, and the Drive Therapeutic 5 Zone Support Mattress in this size, plus alternating-pressure systems. Ask your therapist before you pick an alternating-pressure surface.
Bed ends
Drive's current P503 sheet lists two bed-end styles and three wood-grain laminate colours. The 2025 Drive DeVilbiss catalog names those styles as Brownlee Woods and Mill Creek, with quick-ship colours Oslo Oak, Oslo Cherry, and Oslo Figured Mahogany. Ends come in 35 inch and 42 inch widths. This frame is a 36 inch bed, so the 35 inch ends are the match unless a later width change is planned. Tell us the style and colour when we book delivery.
Funding help for a hospital bed in Ontario
Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) does not cover hospital beds. OHIP does not cover them either. Depending on the person, other programs may help, including ODSP, March of Dimes, Veterans Affairs Canada, hardship funding programs, and community support programs.
Westin Healthcare works with these funding programs every week. Call (905) 451-7743 or use the contact page and we will check which programs fit your situation before any paperwork starts. The funding page lists the programs we work with.
Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA
Westin's own team delivers and sets up this bed across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. We bring it in, assemble it, and show you the hand control before we leave.
We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a bed first. For a scheduled in-home setup, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works. Same-day delivery is offered through our hospital bed rental service; purchased beds are delivered and set up on a scheduled date.
Hospital beds are oversized. The Canada-wide free ground-shipping offer on smaller goods does not apply. If the bed is going outside the GTA, ask us for a freight quote. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery (bring-in, unwrap, test, take packaging away) is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.
Can I rent a hospital bed before I buy?
Yes. If you only need the bed for a recovery, or you want to live with a full-electric bed before you buy, rent first. Hospital bed rentals start from $150 a month. See current packages and rates on hospital bed rentals in Brampton.
Rental packages include side rails and a therapeutic medical mattress. For rentals we offer same-day delivery in Brampton, Etobicoke, Toronto, and Mississauga, and next-day delivery for other areas, with one day of notice. The shortest rental term is one month.
If you later decide to buy, ask us about the Rental to Purchase First Month Credit program (an active Westin loyalty program). The rentals hub and rental program FAQs have the program rules.
Service, repairs, and warranty
When something on the bed needs work, you call the shop that set it up, not a US parts desk. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department. Our technicians come to the home or workplace.
Drive manufacturer warranty
Drive's warranty for the original purchaser of this bed is 10 years on the frame, 15 years on the welds, and 2 years on electrical parts. Those terms are printed on Drive's current P503 sheet and in the 2025 Drive DeVilbiss long-term-care catalog. We handle the warranty claim with you. Ask us if an extended warranty is offered for your order.
Frequently asked questions
Does OHIP cover hospital beds?
No. Hospital beds in Ontario are not covered by OHIP. Depending on the person, March of Dimes, Veterans Affairs Canada, or a community support program may still help. Call (905) 451-7743 and we will check which path fits before anyone starts paperwork.
Does ADP cover hospital beds in Ontario?
No. Ontario's Assistive Devices Program does not cover hospital beds. OHIP does not cover them either. The funding page lists the programs Westin Healthcare works with, including March of Dimes, Veterans Affairs Canada, and community support programs.
What is the difference between a full-electric and a semi-electric hospital bed?
The Drive PrimeCare P503 is full electric, so the hand pendant adjusts the head, the knee, and the height of the bed. A semi-electric bed usually moves the head and foot with a motor and leaves height to a crank. This PrimeCare frame does not use a hand crank for everyday height.
How is the P503 different from the PrimeCare P703 and the P903?
The P503 is the 36 inch entry PrimeCare: 425 lb resident / 450 lb total, 7.8 inches to 30 inches, and 76 inch or 80 inch length. The PrimeCare P703 steps up to 550 lb, 7 inches to 30 inches, 76 / 80 / 84 inch length, and optional 39 to 42 inch width. The PrimeCare P903 is the expandable 600 lb sibling. None of those three is a replacement for the others.
What mattress fits the Drive PrimeCare P503?
The sleep surface takes a 36 inch by 76 inch or 36 inch by 80 inch hospital-bed mattress, 5.5 inches to 7 inches thick. Drive's owner manual says a mattress may not ship with the frame. Ask us to add a Drive Gravity 7, Gravity 8, Gravity 9, Therapeutic 5 Zone, or an alternating-pressure surface when we book delivery. Ask your therapist before you pick an alternating-pressure system.
Can I rent a hospital bed before buying?
Yes. Westin Healthcare rents full-electric hospital beds with side rails and a therapeutic mattress. See current packages and rates on the hospital bed rentals page. If you later buy, ask about the Rental to Purchase First Month Credit program so we can apply the program rules to this bed.
How fast can a hospital bed be delivered in the GTA?
Westin's team delivers and sets up purchased beds across Brampton and the GTA on a scheduled date. Call (905) 451-7743 for the next opening. Same-day delivery belongs to the hospital bed rental service, not automatically to a purchased bed.
What is included with this PrimeCare P503?
You get the Drive P503 full-electric low frame with the eight-function pendant, casters, wall bumper, and mattress retainers. Headboard, footboard, assist rails or assist bars, and a mattress are confirmed with you before delivery. Drive's P503 item is the frame. The 76 inch or 80 inch length is built into that frame.
What is the weight capacity of the PrimeCare P503?
Drive lists a resident weight of 425 lbs and a safe working load of 450 lbs. The total includes the person, the mattress, the rails, and anything else on the bed. If the person is near that limit, or you need a wider sleep deck, ask us about the PrimeCare P703 or a bariatric hospital bed instead of stretching this frame.
What happens if the power goes out?
There is no battery backup on the standard P503. The bed stays in the last position until power returns. Drive's 2018 owner manual lists an optional Timotion backup battery. That kit is not on Drive's current P503 accessory list. Ask us before you order if you need a backup discussed.
What is the warranty on the Drive PrimeCare P503?
For the original purchaser, Drive covers the frame for 10 years, the welds for 15 years, and electrical parts for 2 years. Those terms are printed on Drive's current P503 sheet and in the 2025 long-term-care catalog. Westin Healthcare processes the warranty work on our service and repairs page.
What is Auto-Contour, and can this bed be 76 inches or 80 inches?
Auto-Contour raises the head and knee at the same time so the person is less likely to slide during a position change. The P503 frame already extends between 76 inches and 80 inches. There is no 84 inch or 88 inch kit on this model. If you need more length, ask us about the PrimeCare P703.
