The PreserveTech Lateral Rotation system is Drive Medical's combination surface: lateral rotation plus on-demand low air loss. Westin Healthcare sells it, delivers it, and sets it up for homes in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. Drive's current kit is LS9500N. Westin lists it as LS9500.

This is not a standard alternating-pressure mattress. Twenty 8-inch split cells turn the person on a chosen cycle and angle. Drive states the rotation is there to assist with pulmonary blood flow and mucosal drainage, and to aid in the prevention and treatment of pressure injuries. The LS9500NP control unit is rated 42 to 50 litres per minute.

Who this mattress is for

This mattress is for a person on a 36-inch hospital bed whose clinician has asked for lateral rotation, not only alternating pressure. Families usually call us when turning in bed has become hard and a therapist wants a programmed turn. Drive lists a 500 lb weight capacity. Suitability still belongs to the clinician who knows the person's lungs and skin.

Construction and how it works

This is a mattress replacement. Twenty 8-inch split cells create the turn. A 2-inch foam base sits under the cells for power-outage protection. Ten-inch side air bolsters stay at 55 mmHg to help with transfers and to give a side wall. Low air loss is on demand: it vents air to help moisture when that mode is selected.

The LS9500NP digital unit offers 10 comfort levels and turning cycles of 10, 20, 30, and 60 minutes. Turning modes are 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and adjustable positions up to 40 degrees, in left, right, both, or none (static). Auto-Firm, auto-recovery, and lock-out are on the panel. Audio and visual alarms flag low air pressure. Side-loop cable management keeps the hose off the floor.

The PreserveTech cover is a removable quilted 4-way stretch (43% polyurethane, 57% polyester) over a PVC/nylon base. Drive treats the cover with an antimicrobial to protect the fabric, not the person. It is fluid-resistant, low-shear, and vapour-permeable. A CPR connector dumps the air. Tubing uses EZ Lock / Quick Release. Head-end cells stay more static (pillow feature).

Frequently asked questions

How is lateral rotation different from alternating pressure?

Alternating pressure inflates and deflates cells so the load on the skin moves while the person stays on their back. Lateral rotation turns the person to a chosen angle, up to 40 degrees on this Drive system, on a 10-, 20-, 30-, or 60-minute cycle. This SKU can also run static (no turn). A clinician should choose the class.

What does on-demand low air loss mean?

The pump can vent air through the surface to help moisture and microclimate when that mode is selected. It is not running as a blower-based true low-air-loss Harmony surface. Drive's airflow on this control unit is 42 to 50 litres per minute.

How do I clean the cover?

The PreserveTech cover is removable, fluid-resistant, and vapour-permeable. Follow Drive's user manual for disinfectant. The antimicrobial treatment protects the cover, not the person. Do not immerse the control unit.

What is the weight rating?

Drive lists 500 lbs for LS9500N. If the person is near that limit, or you need a wider deck, this 36-inch rotation surface is not the match.

What size bed does it fit?

36 inches by 80 inches by 10 inches, including the side bolsters. It is not a 42-inch or wider surface.

How loud is the pump?

Drive does not print a decibel number on the LS9500N sheet. This is a 42 to 50 LPM digital unit, a higher flow than the 8 LPM Med Aire pumps. Ask us if pump sound is a concern in a small bedroom.

What happens if the power goes out?

The 2-inch foam base stays under the person. The turn stops. Side bolsters are air, so they go soft with the cells. Resume the prescribed mode when power returns.

What is the warranty?

24 months on the control unit and mattress for the original purchaser. Westin Healthcare processes the claim.
