Description

The SPAN PressureGuard Easy Air XL is Span America's bariatric microclimate mattress with alternating pressure. Span America is a Savaria company. Westin Healthcare quotes it, delivers it, and sets it on the bed for homes and care settings in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area.

This listing is the Easy Air XL only: a 7-inch air-and-foam surface in 42, 48, or 53 inch widths, 80 or 84 inches long (plus a special 86 x 42 inch size), rated 350 to 1000 lb, with the 8310 control unit. It is not the Easy Air LR rotation mattress. It is not the PressureGuard Bariatric APM. The bed frame is sold separately.

Who this mattress is for

This mattress is for a person whose therapist has asked for a bariatric microclimate surface, or whose body weight and bed width sit above a standard 35-inch Easy Air. Span writes it for people from 350 to 1000 lb who also need help with heat and moisture next to the skin. Families usually pair a 42-inch Easy Air XL with a 42-inch bariatric or expanded Span deck, and a 48-inch size with a 48-inch deck.

Choose this surface when the care plan names powered microclimate management, alternating pressure, a Geo-Matt top, a Safety-Edge, and a 1000 lb rating on a wide deck. If the therapist named a still foam bariatric mattress instead, see the SPAN Geo-Mattress Atlas. If they named powered alternating pressure without the microclimate coverlet, see the SPAN PressureGuard Bariatric APM. If they named Easy Air LR (lateral rotation on a standard-width Easy Air), that is a different listing.

  • Home care or long-term care on a 42, 48, or 53 inch sleep deck
  • Anyone who needs 350 to 1000 lb on a powered microclimate mattress
  • A care plan that asked for Alternate, Float, or Auto Firm on the Span 8310 control unit

Construction and how it works

The Easy Air XL is an air-and-foam mattress with a two-part air cover. On top, the Geo-Matt design segments the foam so the surface can reduce friction and shear next to the skin. At the foot, Heel Slope tapers the foam so more of the load sits on the lower leg and less sits on the heel. Under that top, six air cylinders run head to foot inside a foam shell. Safety-Edge bolsters sit along the sides to add stability when the person sits or transfers, and to encourage them toward the centre of the bed.

The outer coverlet is zippered and vapor-permeable. Under it, an inner air-delivery cover sends a constant stream of air through Span's Air Diffusion Matrix so moisture vapour can leave before it turns back into liquid. Span calls this microclimate management. That airflow stays on whenever the 8310 is running.

The 8310 hangs on the footboard and connects to the air lines at the foot end. In Alternate mode the six cylinders change loading across the surface. One complete cycle takes 15 minutes. Float holds an even powered immersion. Auto Firm runs for 30 minutes, then returns to the last setting. A lockout stops casual button changes. Normal and Low Pressure lights are on the unit. Five comfort steps let you go softer or firmer after the mattress has filled.

If power is cut, leave the 8310 plugged into the mattress and leave the air lines connected. Span writes that the cylinders equalize and hold inflation, so the surface keeps working as a non-powered air flotation mattress. Span lists the Easy Air XL for treatment of stage 1 to 4 pressure injuries and for prevention in people at high risk, including people with excess moisture or macerated skin. That is Span's indication language, not a promise that a wound will heal.

SPAN PressureGuard Easy Air XL specifications

These figures are for the Easy Air XL L80xxXL-29 / L84xxXL-29 / 62507 family with the 8310. They are not Easy Air LR figures and not Bariatric APM figures. The specification tab holds the stored values.

Height is 7 inches. Average mattress weight is about 32 lb. Weight capacity is 350 to 1000 lb on every size. Span does not write this surface for anyone under 350 lb. The 8310 is rated 120 V AC, 60 Hz, 1.0 A maximum, and uses less than 15 watts. It is a Class I, Type BF unit listed to CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 60601-1:2014. Warranty is 3 years on the mattress, 2 years on the cover and coverlet, and 2 years on the control unit, not prorated. Fire-barrier builds (the -29 suffix) meet NFPA 101, Cal TB 117, and 16 CFR 1632 and 1633.

The coverlet wipes clean in place with a hospital-grade cleaner, or you can unzip it and machine-wash it on a cold or warm cycle with a cold rinse, then air-dry it. Wipe the inner cover in place with neutral soap and lukewarm water, rinse, and let it dry 20 to 30 minutes. Unplug the 8310 before you wipe it with a well-wrung cloth. Do not puncture the mattress. Span recommends 7-inch deep fitted sheets.

Size

Use Size to pick the Span SKU. Match the mattress width to the sleep deck, and the length to the deck length. Every size includes the 8310 control unit and the coverlet.

  • 80 x 42 in (L8042XL-29), 350 to 1000 lb
  • 80 x 48 in (L8048XL-29), 350 to 1000 lb
  • 80 x 53 in (L8053XL-29), 350 to 1000 lb
  • 84 x 42 in (L8442XL-29), 350 to 1000 lb
  • 84 x 48 in (L8448XL-29), 350 to 1000 lb
  • 84 x 53 in (L8453XL-29), 350 to 1000 lb
  • 86 x 42 in (62507), 350 to 1000 lb

There is no 35-inch or 36-inch Easy Air XL, and there is no 54-inch size. The default on this page is 80 x 42 in (L8042XL-29). A spare 8310 is available if the original pump later needs a replacement. If the care team named Easy Air LR or the Bariatric APM, we quote that listing instead.

Funding help for a therapeutic mattress in Ontario

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) does not cover hospital beds or mattresses, so plan around other routes. Funding that may help instead: March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through before you buy.

Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA

Westin's own team delivers and sets up this mattress across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. We bring it in, place it on the bed, hang the control unit, and check the air before we leave.

We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a mattress first. For a scheduled in-home setup, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works. Same-day delivery is offered through our hospital bed rental service; purchased mattresses are delivered and set up on a scheduled date.

Hospital mattresses are oversized. The Canada-wide free ground-shipping offer on smaller goods does not apply. If the mattress is going outside the GTA, ask us for a freight quote. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery (bring-in, unwrap, test, take packaging away) is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.

Which Westin beds this mattress fits

Span writes that the Easy Air XL is intended for use on any standard hospital bed frame. Place it directly on the sleep deck, coverlet up, with the air connector at the foot of the bed. Confirm the mattress fits the frame and keep gaps small. Match width to width and length to length. This surface starts at 42 inches. It does not fit a 35 or 36 inch homecare deck.

A 42-inch Easy Air XL (L8042XL-29, L8442XL-29, or 62507) is the size for a 42-inch expanded Span deck, including the Span ReadyWide we stock when that frame is opened to 42 inches, and the 42-inch setting on the Span America Encore. It also fits the Drive 15300LW 42-inch bariatric bed. A 48-inch size fits the Drive 15302LW 48-inch bariatric bed. A 53-inch size needs a 53-inch sleep deck. It is not a 54-inch Drive mattress. The 86-inch size (62507) needs an 86-inch deck.

Check both the mattress rating and the bed safe working load before we book delivery. The mattress is 1000 lb. The Drive 15300LW is 600 lb (525 lb maximum patient weight). The Drive 15302LW is 750 lb. The Encore is 600 lb safe working load and 450 lb maximum patient weight. The lower of the two ratings is the one that counts. If the care plan wants foam at bariatric widths instead of a pump, start with the SPAN Geo-Mattress Atlas. If it wants alternating pressure without the microclimate coverlet, start with the SPAN PressureGuard Bariatric APM. See all hospital beds if you are still choosing a platform.

The 8310 needs a working grounded wall outlet. Span rates it at 120 V AC, 60 Hz, 1.0 A maximum, and less than 15 watts. Hang it on the footboard with the hanger, or set it on a stable surface a caregiver can reach. Plug the supplied cord straight into the wall. Span says not to use an extension cord or a multiple-outlet strip unless the facility engineering department has approved a heavy-duty or hospital-grade strip. Route the cord and the air lines at the foot of the bed, clear of moving parts and walkways. Switch the unit on at the side rocker, then choose Alternate or Float. Allow about 20 minutes of fill before the person lies down. On a power cut, leave the unit and the air lines connected so the mattress can hold its air.

Related Span surfaces we already stock include PressureGuard Custom Care Convertible LAL, non-powered Custom Care, and Span-Care Convertible. Ask us to quote the named model if the therapist wrote one of those instead of Easy Air XL. See all medical mattresses if you are still choosing the surface.

Service and warranty

When something on the mattress or the control unit needs work, you call the shop that delivered it, not a US parts desk. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department. Our technicians come to the home or workplace.

Span America manufacturer warranty

Span lists 3 years on the mattress, 2 years on the cover and coverlet, and 2 years on the control unit, not prorated, for the original purchaser. We handle the claim with you.

Frequently asked questions

How is the Easy Air XL different from Easy Air LR?

This page is the Easy Air XL only. It is a 42, 48, or 53 inch bariatric surface rated 350 to 1000 lb, with microclimate management, Alternate, and Float. Easy Air LR is the standard-width Easy Air that adds lateral rotation. If the therapist named rotation, we quote the LR listing.

How is this different from the PressureGuard Bariatric APM?

Both are Span bariatric air mattresses. The Bariatric APM is alternating pressure on a 42, 48, or 54 inch deck, rated 120 to 750 lb, with the 7510 pump. Easy Air XL adds the Air Diffusion Matrix coverlet for heat and moisture, uses the 8310, and is rated 350 to 1000 lb on 42, 48, or 53 inch decks. If the care plan did not ask for microclimate management, start with the Bariatric APM.

How is this different from the Geo-Mattress Atlas?

Atlas is foam. The surface stays still. There is no pump. The Easy Air XL is a powered air-and-foam mattress with microclimate airflow. If the care plan asked for a still foam bariatric mattress, see the SPAN Geo-Mattress Atlas.

What is the weight rating?

Span lists 350 to 1000 lb on every Easy Air XL size. Span does not write this surface for anyone under 350 lb. We still check the bed's safe working load. A 1000 lb mattress on a 600 lb or 750 lb frame is limited by the lower of the two ratings.

What size do I need?

Match the mattress to the sleep deck. 42-inch deck, L8042XL-29, L8442XL-29, or 62507. 48-inch deck, L8048XL-29 or L8448XL-29. 53-inch deck, L8053XL-29 or L8453XL-29. Length is 80, 84, or 86 inches. There is no 35-inch, 36-inch, or 54-inch size on this page. Measure the deck before we quote.

Which beds does the Easy Air XL fit?

Span states it is intended for a standard hospital bed frame. We commonly set a 42-inch size on a 42-inch ReadyWide or Encore deck, or on the Drive 15300LW. A 48-inch size needs the Drive 15302LW. A 53-inch size needs a 53-inch deck, not a 54-inch Drive. Confirm the open deck width before we cut the order.

What power does the 8310 need?

Span rates the 8310 at 120 V AC, 60 Hz, 1.0 A maximum, and less than 15 watts. Plug the supplied cord into a grounded wall outlet. Do not use an extension cord or a power bar unless the facility has approved a hospital-grade strip. Hang the unit on the footboard and keep the cord and air lines clear of moving bed parts.

What happens if the power goes out?

Leave the 8310 connected to the mattress and leave the air lines on. Span writes that the cylinders equalize and hold inflation for days or weeks as a non-powered air flotation mattress. When power returns, the unit comes back in Float at comfort level 2. Do not unplug the unit during the outage if you want it to hold air.

How do I clean the cover?

Span says to wipe the coverlet and the inner cover with neutral soap and lukewarm water, rinse, and let them dry 20 to 30 minutes. The coverlet can also be unzipped and machine-washed, then air-dried. Use a hospital-grade phenolic or quaternary disinfectant if you need to disinfect. Unplug the 8310 before you wipe it. Do not puncture the mattress.

What is the warranty on the PressureGuard Easy Air XL?

Span lists 3 years on the mattress, 2 years on the cover and coverlet, and 2 years on the control unit, not prorated, for the original purchaser. Westin Healthcare processes the warranty work on our service and repairs page.

Can funding help pay for this mattress in Ontario?

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program does not cover mattresses. March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada, and community programs may still help, depending on the person. Call (905) 451-7743 and we will point you to the right route before anyone starts paperwork.

Who should not use this mattress?

Span does not write the Easy Air XL for anyone with an unstable spinal cord, or for anyone under 350 lb. Ask the therapist before we quote if either of those apply. People under 350 lb belong on a standard Easy Air or Easy Air LR, not this XL.
