Description
The JAY Basic cushion is Sunrise Medical's 2 inch (5 cm) mildly contoured foam wheelchair cushion for a person at very low risk of skin breakdown who needs mild stability in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. The current Basic card rates it at 330 lbs (150 kg) and 1.7 lbs (0.77 kg) on a 16 by 16 inch size, with widths from 14 to 24 inches (36 to 61 cm) and depths from 16 to 20 inches (41 to 51 cm).
This is the first rung on the JAY foam ladder. It is built for sling upholstery. The beveled bottom is there so the seat does not hammock. It is not a fluid cushion and it is not a high-risk skin-protection cushion.
Who this cushion is for
The JAY Basic cushion fits a person who sits for shorter stretches, can shift their own weight, and needs a level foam surface more than a deep well. Sunrise writes it for very low skin-breakdown risk and mild stability. A seating therapist should confirm that this is enough if skin or posture is already a concern.
- 2 inch (5 cm) mildly contoured foam
- Beveled bottom for sling seats
- 330 lb (150 kg) rating on the current card
Foam, cover, and sling-seat fit
The JAY Basic cushion is a soft foam base with a mild contour and a moisture-resistant cover. The no-slip bottom is meant to stay put during a transfer. The beveled underside is how Sunrise keeps a sling seat closer to level so the pelvis does not sink in the middle.
It is a foam wheelchair cushion, not a JAY Flow fluid pad and not an air insert. If you need a pressure relief cushion with fluid, look at the JAY Union Cushion or the JAY J2 Standard Cushion.
JAY Basic Cushion specifications
These figures are from Sunrise Medical's current Basic card. The specification tab holds the stored values.
Height 2 inches (5 cm). Width 14 to 24 inches (36 to 61 cm). Depth 16 to 20 inches (41 to 51 cm). Product weight 1.7 lbs (0.77 kg) at 16 by 16 inches. User weight capacity 330 lbs (150 kg). Base: soft, mildly contoured foam with a beveled bottom. Outer cover: moisture-resistant with a no-slip bottom.
Warranty in the JAY foam owner's manual is 12 months on the Basic cushion for the original purchaser. The removable cover is outside that term.
Width and depth
Use Choose Width for 14 to 24 inches and Choose Depth for the depth that matches the wheelchair seat. Sunrise prints depths of 16 to 20 inches on the Basic card. A seating therapist measures hip width in sitting, not the chair's advertised seat width alone.
Which JAY wheelchair cushion fits
The JAY Basic cushion is the low, mildly contoured foam start. Stay here if very low skin risk and a sling seat are the brief. The JAY Soft Combi P Cushion adds moderate contour and a coated foam base. The JAY GO Cushion is dual-layer foam with a Dartex cover. The JAY Ion Cushion is the foam skin-protection and positioning step. The JAY Fusion with Cryo Technology Cushion is the current fluid and cooling step.
Funding help for a wheelchair cushion or back support in Ontario
This cushion or back support is an ADP positioning device category item. Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) can fund 75% of the cost of positioning devices such as cushions and back supports when they are prescribed through an assessment by an ADP-registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist with an eligible mobility device, and some income-support programs cover the full cost. Not every product qualifies, so talk to us before you buy. March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs can also help. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through.

Service and warranty
When something on the cushion needs work, you call the shop that set it up, not a US parts desk. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department. Our technicians come to the home or workplace.
Sunrise Medical JAY warranty
The JAY foam owner's manual prints 12 months on the Basic cushion for the original purchaser, not including the removable cover, punctures, tears, or burns. Sunrise notes that Canadian terms can follow provincial funding rules. We handle the warranty claim with you. Ask us if an extended warranty is offered for your order.
Frequently asked questions
What Size Wheelchair Cushion Do I Need?
The JAY Basic cushion is ordered by seat width and depth. Sunrise prints 14 to 24 inch widths and 16 to 20 inch depths. A seating therapist measures hip width in sitting and matches the wheelchair seat. Use Choose Width and Choose Depth for those inches.
How Do I Choose Between Gel, Foam, And Air Cushions?
The JAY Basic cushion is foam only. JAY Flow fluid (often searched as gel) sits in Union, Fusion, and J2. Fusion can also take an air insert. Pick Basic for mild foam comfort. Pick a fluid JAY if a therapist wants immersion under the seat bones.
Does ADP Cover Wheelchair Cushions?
Ontario's Assistive Devices Program can help with a wheelchair cushion or back support after an ADP-registered therapist assessment with an eligible mobility device. Eligibility depends on the person. Call (905) 451-7743 or use the funding page before you buy.
Is The JAY Basic Cushion For A Sling Seat?
The JAY Basic cushion is written for wheelchairs with sling upholstery. The beveled bottom is how Sunrise reduces hammocking so the sitting surface stays closer to level.
What Is The Weight Limit For The JAY Basic Cushion?
The JAY Basic cushion is rated at 330 lbs (150 kg) on Sunrise's current Basic card. If you need a higher rating, ask us about a wide JAY or another family.
How Do I Clean The JAY Basic Cushion?
The JAY Basic cushion has a removable moisture-resistant cover. Sunrise's care line is machine wash in warm water and drip dry or tumble dry on low. Do not soak the foam.
How Long Is The JAY Basic Warranty?
The JAY Basic cushion carries 12 months from purchase in the foam owner's manual, for the original purchaser. The cover sits outside that term.
Can I See A JAY Cushion In Brampton?
Westin Healthcare can show a JAY cushion in the Brampton and Toronto stores and deliver across the GTA. Call (905) 451-7743 to check what is on the floor.
