The JAY J3 back is Sunrise Medical's configurable wheelchair back support for Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. The live Canada card rates 12 to 20 inch widths at 300 lbs (136 kg) and 22 to 26 inch widths at 500 lbs (227 kg). Contour, height, and hardware are built to the seating assessment. This is a quote-only custom back, not a cart item that ships tomorrow.

Sunrise writes the J3 as a line of width, height, and contour-depth shells that fit the back to the client. A seating therapist and an ADP authorizer choose the shell with Westin before anything is ordered.

Who this back is for

The JAY J3 back fits a person whose therapist wants a solid contoured shell, not a strap-on foam pad. Stay here when posterior, lateral, or deep pelvic support has to be specified, not guessed. A seating therapist should confirm J3 versus the JAY GO Back or the JAY Encompass Back before you order.

Contour, height, and hardware

Sunrise prints five contour codes on the current J3 card. Posterior (PA) is 2.2 inches of lateral thoracic support. Posterior Lateral (PL) is 3 inches. Posterior Deep (PD), Posterior Deep Lateral (PDL), and Posterior Deep Contour (PDC) are 6 inches, with PDC aimed at the pelvis rather than the thorax. The popular 6 inch PD shell is offered in heights from 8 to 24 inches and widths from 12 to 20 inches, with curved 7 inch built-in laterals.

Height bands on the spec table are Lower Thoracic at 6.5, 8, and 9.5 inches; Mid Thoracic at 12, 13.5, and 15 inches; Upper Thoracic at 16.5, 18, and 19.5 inches; and Shoulder at 21, 22.5, and 24 inches. Hardware choices on the card are RH, SH, TH, and 4-Point, with 20 degrees of angle, +2 inches of width, and cane diameters from 3/4 inch to 1 1/8 inch. The foam insert is 1 1/2 inches. The outer cover is spacer fabric with a Lycra stretch layer. A headrest mount is available. Spine Align inserts, extra laterals, chest straps, and Whitmyer head supports are ordered with the back, not guessed on this page.

J3 Plus stays on this same Sunrise card as a Mid Thoracic option for a bariatric client, with a pivoting lower vanity shell, widths up to 26 inches, and the same 500 lb ceiling. How a J3 is ordered

A seating therapist measures torso height, trunk width, and the support the person needs. Westin maps that to a contour code, a height band, a width, and hardware that matches the chair canes. There is no drop-down that can do that work. If leftover ERP rows for one Upper Thoracic or one J3 Plus size still sit in our system, they are not this family page. New orders go through this assessment.

Which JAY wheelchair back fits

The JAY J3 back is the full contour family. Stay here when the therapist wants PA, PL, PD, PDL, or PDC and a named height band. The JAY GO Back is the strap-on foam step for milder needs. The JAY Zip Back is the kids shell, 8 to 14 inches wide. The JAY Encompass Back is the three-piece swing-away lateral back, rated at 250 lbs (113 kg). Pair a J3 with a current JAY cushion such as the JAY Ion Cushion or the JAY LitePro Cushion when the assessment calls for both.

Funding help for a wheelchair cushion or back support in Ontario

This cushion or back support is an ADP positioning device category item. Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) can fund 75% of the cost of positioning devices such as cushions and back supports when they are prescribed through an assessment by an ADP-registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist with an eligible mobility device, and some income-support programs cover the full cost. Not every product qualifies, so talk to us before you buy. March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs can also help. Westin's own team delivers this wheelchair back support across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area once the shell is built. We bring it in, check the hardware against the chair canes, and show you the cover before we leave.
