JAY Ion Cushion

The JAY Ion cushion is Sunrise Medical's 4 inch (10 cm) multi-layer foam wheelchair cushion for skin protection and positioning in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. The current card rates 14 to 21 inch widths at 330 lbs (150 kg) and 22 to 24 inch widths at 500 lbs (227 kg). An 18 by 18 inch size weighs 3.5 lbs (1.6 kg).

This is the adult foam pressure-relief step on the JAY ladder. Foam firmness changes with width. It is not an air-cell cushion and it has no inflation valve.

The JAY Ion cushion fits a person whose therapist wants foam skin protection and positioning without a fluid pad. Sunrise writes it as a comfortable skin-protection and positioning wheelchair cushion. A seating therapist should confirm Ion versus Union or Fusion if sitting time is long or there is a history of skin breakdown.

Foam layers and dual cover

The JAY Ion cushion uses a dual-layer foam base. Sunrise sets foam firmness by cushion width so a wider cushion is not the same softness as a narrow one. A Visco memory-foam top layer is there to spread load. The inner cover is Dartex-coated Lycra with a water-resistant zipper and anti-wicking thread. The outer cover is a machine-washable four-way stretch with silver-impregnated fibre (Ionic+ on the US card, X-static on the CA card) and a 3DX spacer layer for airflow.

There is no air insert and no pump. If a therapist wants fluid under the pelvis, use the JAY Union Cushion or the JAY Fusion with Cryo.

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) can fund 75% of the cost of positioning devices such as cushions and back supports when they are prescribed through an assessment by an ADP-registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist with an eligible mobility device, and some income-support programs cover the full cost.
