The Geo-Matrix Silver cushion is Blake Medical's 2.75 inch (7.0 cm) three-layer all-gel wheelchair cushion. Westin Healthcare fits it in Brampton and across the Greater Toronto Area after a seating check on the chair. Ontario lists the Silver seating line as SESG00010.

This is the all-gel Silver with no foam core. It is not the two-layer Bronze, and it is not the foam-and-gel Hybrid or Platinum.

Who this cushion is for

The Geo-Matrix Silver cushion is a gel wheelchair cushion Blake Medical indicates for people at high risk of skin breakdown or with existing wounds, limited mobility, and limited postural control. Blake also points the Silver at power or tilt chairs and at long-term care, because the gel layers can be machine washed or disinfected. The Silver is rated 200 lb (91 kg).

Fit and size

A wheelchair cushion should match the wheelchair seat, not a clothing size. Measure the seat width and seat depth on the chair. Blake's All-Gel manual says the cushion width should match the seat, may sit up to 1 inch (2.5 cm) wider against the arm supports, and the depth may run about 1 inch past the seat. The Blake logo faces the front left.

Use Choose Width and Choose Depth for the seat size. Blake's standard Silver sizes run 16 by 16 through 22 by 20 inches (41 by 41 through 56 by 51 cm). The product code is GS then width and depth, for example GS1818. Custom dimensions are available from Blake.

All-gel build and care

The Geo-Matrix Silver is a three-layer gel wheelchair cushion. There is no foam core. Blake says the gel is a dry-polymer solid with no deflation and no leak path, and that it does not need daily calibration. Blake indicates the Silver for help with stage 1-4 pressure injuries and for vibration dampening.

Each cushion ships with a soft-touch outer incontinence-proof cover and an inner wipeable moisture-proof cover. Both covers machine wash to 60 C. Do not wring them. Lay them flat to dry. Do not use bleach. Unbonded gel sheets can go in a front-load washer, one sheet, liquid detergent, no agitator. Air-dry the gel out of direct sun. We show you the layer order when we set it up.

The Geo-Matrix Bronze Gel Cushion is the two-layer all-gel sibling at 2 inches, for people Blake describes as able to reposition, when comfort and vibration matter more than skin protection. The Geo-Matrix Hybrid Cushion adds a foam core at 3.5 inches and 275 lb. The Geo-Matrix Platinum Cushion keeps foam and a Blue gel base at 3.75 inches.

Air, foam, and gel are different jobs. A seating therapist should pick the medium. We will not choose it from a web form.

Funding help for a wheelchair cushion or back support in Ontario

This cushion or back support is an ADP positioning device category item. Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) can fund 75% of the cost of positioning devices such as cushions and back supports when they are prescribed through an assessment by an ADP-registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist with an eligible mobility device, and some income-support programs cover the full cost.
