The Savaria Manual Birthing Sling is a Silvalea mesh emergency evacuation sling specifically designed for the birthing pool. Colour-coded grab handles and edging help a trained team identify and hold the sling. Soft mesh with large holes lets water drain as the person is moved. This is a manual handling aid. Correct manual handling practices must be followed. It is held at the grab handles by caregivers. It does not attach to a loop, clip, or E-clip carry bar.
Who this sling is for
This sling is for a maternity room that needs an emergency evacuation from a birthing pool to a bed at the pool edge. Silvalea designed it so the person stays supported, including the head, while water drains through the mesh. A competent person who is trained in the sling must assess the person before it is used.

What you get
You get one Manual Birthing Sling, article BIRTH1. The body is 100% polyester mesh with large holes for quick water drainage. Colour-coded grab handles sit four to a side, with colour-coded edging so the same colour is easy to match left and right. A lift is not part of this article. A slide sheet, noodle floats, and an inflatable neck ring are used in the factory application when the room plan calls for them. They are quoted separately.

Safe working load on the product specification sheet is 220 kg (485 lb). Fabric is 100% polyester mesh. The sling is 43 1/4 in (110 cm) wide and 68 in (173 cm) long. Wash at 85 C (185 F). Tumble dry on low heat, maximum 50 C. Follow the label on the sling you receive. Inspect handles, mesh, seams, and the label after every wash. Take the sling out of service if anything is worn, torn, or the label cannot be read.
Care and laundering
Close any hook-and-loop before the wash. Use a non-biological detergent. Wash at 85 C (185 F). Those temperatures are the maximum. Tumble dry low, maximum 50 C. Do not iron. Do not dry the sling on a heater or steam pipe. Store it dry and clean so it is ready for the next emergency drill or transfer.

Attachment and compatible lifts
The Savaria Manual Birthing Sling is a manual lifting device. Colour-coded grab handles are the attachment. Four handles sit on each side. Each caregiver holds two handles of the same colour and can wrap the loops around the hands for a secure grip. It does not use clip fasteners and it does not use Human Care E-clips. Silvalea states that this article is a manual handling aid and that a hoistable birthing sling is a separate version. BIRTH1 is the manual version on this page. It is not quoted as a loop, clip, or E-clip carry-bar sling for a Handicare or Savaria ceiling lift.
The factory application starts with the bed at an accessible edge of the pool, at the same level, and a slide sheet on the bed. EasySlide and WendyLett are the slide-sheet families we already carry. Ask us to add a sheet on the same quote. After the person is on the bed, a later seated lift uses a different sling, usually the Handicare Universal Sling. How many caregivers does it take?
A minimum of four trained caregivers. Each caregiver holds two handles of the same colour, one pair on each side of the sling.
How is it applied?
The factory sequence puts the bed at the pool edge at the same level, lays a slide sheet on the bed, and slips the sling under the person so the head stays supported. The team uses the buoyancy of the water, including three gentle bounces, then raises the person up and over onto the bed and uses the slide sheet to finish the position. Noodle floats and an inflatable neck ring are added only when the assessment calls for them.
Can it stay under the person after the transfer?
The factory sequence ends with the person on the bed, ready for treatment. This is not a leave-in-place in-situ sling. Take it off once the person is safe and the room plan allows it.
How do I wash it?
Close hook-and-loop, use a non-biological detergent, and wash at 85 C (185 F). Tumble dry low, maximum 50 C. Do not iron. Inspect handles, mesh, and the label after every wash.
Does it fit a ceiling lift?
BIRTH1 is a manual lifting device. It is not the hoistable birthing sling. For a later lift transfer, use a sling that matches the carry bar, such as the Handicare Universal Sling.
How is this different from the Universal sling?
This sling is for an emergency evacuation from a birthing pool, held by caregivers at the grab handles. The Universal is a seated loop sling for a Handicare or Savaria carry bar. Many rooms will quote both: BIRTH1 for the pool, Universal for later lifts.
Does funding cover a sling in Ontario?
Coverage depends on the care setting and the rest of the transfer plan. Call (905) 451-7743 and we will check what is available for the maternity unit and this sling together.
