Description
The Handicare Hammock Sling is Savaria Patient Care's standard hammock-style seated transfer sling. It wraps the sacral area, upper thighs, back, and head when a person needs more postural support than a Universal sling. Every article on this card has built-in head support and colour-coded loop straps. Westin Healthcare quotes it and fits it in Brampton and across the Greater Toronto Area on Handicare loop carry bars.
This is the basic Hammock family (8D and 5371 codes). It is not the Deluxe Hammock hybrid, which uses 8H codes and mixes a Universal application with hammock legs. If the person needs a general seated sling with less wrap, start with the Handicare Universal Sling.
Who this sling is for
Savaria lists the Hammock for people with poor body tone who need each thigh held independently in a neutral position, to help minimize internal and external hip rotation. It also names strong support for amputee transfers after a clinician's risk assessment. It is for bed, chair, and commode transfers in a seated, reclined, or supine position, in a home or a care room.
- Higher-support seated transfers when a Universal sling is not enough
- Small commode opening for toileting with the sling on
- Floor pickup and boosting in bed, with the built-in head support
- Loop carry bars on Handicare ceiling lifts and the Carina 350
What you get
The sling is a hammock cut with divided legs, a small commode opening, multi-loop shoulder and leg straps, and caregiver handles on each side. You can apply it from a chair or from the bed. Leg straps can run divided or crossed. Short loops at the shoulders and long loops at the legs sit the person more upright. Use the same colour loop on both sides.
Four fabrics ship on this card:
- PolySlip: knitted polyester with an anti-microbial coating and low-friction nylon on the outer legs
- Mesh/Poly: polyester mesh with a smooth polyester layer and non-absorbent inner-leg padding, for showering or a pool with the sling on
- Spacer: multi-directional stretch that wicks moisture. Handicare says only spacer fabric should stay under the person
- Quilted: mesh body with quilted mesh legs, to reduce bunching under the thighs
Handicare Hammock Sling specifications
These figures are from the current Hammock size charts. The specification tab holds the stored values. PolySlip and Mesh/Poly are 450 lb in XXS and XS, 625 lb in Small, Medium, and Large, and 1000 lb in XL. Spacer is 625 lb in every size. Quilted is 600 lb in every size. The finished system is limited by the lowest rating among the lift, the carry bar, and the sling.
Head support is built in on every 8D and 5371 article listed here. Attachment is loop only. It does not use a clip bar or a Human Care E-clip / mushroom bar.

Care and laundering
Put the sling in a laundry bag before it goes in the washer. Handicare prints a maximum of 80 C (176 F). The family is polyester and nylon. Life expectancy is up to 4 years depending on use, care, and laundering. Inspect loops, seams, and fabric before every use and after every wash. Discard the sling if you find a tear or a serious defect.
Only the Spacer fabric is for leave-in-place use. Other fabrics raise the risk of skin breakdown if they stay under the person.
Delivery in Brampton and the GTA
Westin's own team can deliver this sling across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area, on its own or with a Handicare lift setup. We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a sling first. For a scheduled drop-off or a fitting, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works.
This is a small carton. The Canada-wide free ground-shipping offer on smaller goods can apply when it ships without a lift. If it travels with a patient lift, the lift is oversized and White-Glove Delivery is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.
Which lifts this sling fits
The Hammock Sling is a loop sling. Handicare says its loop-style slings fit the complete range of Handicare carry bars, on Handicare lift systems, including a mobile floor lift when the carry bar sits above the person. It does not use a clip bar or a Human Care E-clip.
On our floor that is a Handicare loop carry bar on the Handicare C450, the Handicare C625, the Handicare A450, or the two-point SlingBar on the Handicare Carina 350. Match the sling's own safe working load to the motor. Shop related styles in full-body slings, universal slings, and divided-leg slings.
If the person needs a lighter general seated sling, stay with the Universal Sling. Sit-to-stand thorax slings belong on a sit-to-stand lift, not on this hammock.
Service and warranty
When something on the sling needs work, you call the shop that sold it, not a US parts desk. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department.
Handicare manufacturer warranty
Handicare warrants slings against defects in material or workmanship for 1 year from the date of installation or 18 months from the date of manufacture, whichever is shorter. We handle the claim with you.
Frequently asked questions
What model is this?
It is the Handicare Hammock Sling, now listed by Savaria Patient Care. PolySlip codes start 8D1, Mesh/Poly start 8D2, Spacer start 8D4, and Quilted codes start 5371. It is the standard hammock, not the Deluxe Hammock 8H family.
Is this a loop sling or an E-clip sling?
Loop. Colour-coded loops on a Handicare or Savaria carry bar. It does not use clips or Human Care mushroom E-clips.
What is the safe working load?
PolySlip and Mesh/Poly: 450 lb in XXS and XS, 625 lb in Small, Medium, and Large, and 1000 lb in XL. Spacer: 625 lb in every size. Quilted: 600 lb in every size. The finished system is limited by the lowest rating among the lift, the bar, and the sling.
Which size should I order?
Use the charts above as a starting point, then confirm with a clinician or our staff before first use. We will match the selector to one manufacturer article.
Does it fit a C450, A450, or Carina 350?
Yes. Those Handicare motors use loop carry-bar hooks. It also fits the C625. It does not fit a Human Care E-clip bar or a sit-to-stand thorax bar.
How is this different from the Universal Sling?
The Universal is the general seated loop sling. The Hammock is the higher-support wrap for the sacral area, thighs, back, and head when body tone is poor or an amputee transfer needs a more independent thigh hold. Start with the Universal when that wrap is enough.
How is this different from the Deluxe Hammock?
The Deluxe Hammock is a hybrid with 8H codes. It applies more like a Universal and uses hammock legs. This card is the standard Hammock with built-in head support (8D and 5371). Ask us if you already have an 8H2430 on file and we will keep you on that family.
Does every size include head support?
Yes. Every article listed here has taped, built-in head support. Floor pickup and boosting in bed are listed as uses that need that support.
Can the sling stay under the person?
Only the Spacer fabric is for leave-in-place use. Handicare says other fabrics raise the risk of skin breakdown if they stay under the person. A clinician should document that choice.
Does it work for an amputee transfer?
Savaria names strong support for amputee transfers on this cut. A trained professional still completes a risk assessment before first use.
How do I wash it?
Use a laundry bag and stay at or under 80 C (176 F). Follow the label on the article you receive. Inspect loops and seams after every wash.
Does funding cover a sling in Ontario?
Slings follow the funding path of the lift they are used with. Call (905) 451-7743 and we will check the Handicare lift and the sling together.
