One thing to know before anything else: this code, 50960-604, is the build that ships without a cover. Span America makes the same overlay in a covered version, and this is not it. If you need a cover, read the section below before you order.

This is a bed overlay, not the wheelchair cushion

Span America sells two different products with PRT in the name, and they are easy to confuse:

• PRT Matt, this product. A 34 in by 72 in foam overlay that goes on a bed. Span America files it under preventative overlays in the surfaces part of its catalogue.
• Geo-Matt PRT, a 3 in wheelchair seat cushion with an anti-slip top and a non-skid bottom, in sizes like 16 x 16 in and 18 x 16 in. Span America files it under seating.

If you are buying for a wheelchair, you want the cushion page. If you are buying for a bed, you are in the right place.

What cross-cut foam does

The foam is sliced across in head, torso and foot zones. Cutting the slab turns one continuous surface into a field of segments that can compress independently, so the overlay follows the shape of the body rather than pressing back as a single plane. Zoning it into three areas lets the overlay behave differently under the torso, which carries most of the load, and under the heels, which concentrate pressure into a small area.

The foam is a distinctive lavender colour, which in a facility with several overlay types in circulation is a genuinely useful thing: staff can tell at a glance which surface is on which bed.

Who the PRT Matt is for

Span America positions it for pressure injury prevention in low to moderate risk patients. That is the honest ceiling:

• Low to moderate risk, skin intact. This is the product's band, and an overlay is the least disruptive way to add protection to a bed that already has a mattress on it.
• Moderate to high risk. Step up to the Geo-Matt Overlay, which Span America positions for that band.
• An established pressure injury under treatment. That is a job for a replacement therapeutic mattress, not an overlay. Call us with the skin assessment and we will work through it with you.

About the cover

Code 50960-604 is supplied without the Soft Skin sleeve. That is a deliberate build, usually chosen where a facility already stocks its own covers or launders its own linens over the overlay.

Span America also lists 50960-600, the same overlay supplied with a fitted Soft Skin sleeve. Soft Skin is Span America's overlay cover: it protects the foam, is vapour permeable but resistant to liquids, and does not interfere with support surface function. If that is the version you want, ask us and we will confirm with Savaria whether it can go on your quote.

Do not put an uncovered foam overlay into service where fluids are likely without a plan for what goes over it. Foam that takes fluid cannot be cleaned out.
