Description

The Span America Geo-Mattress UltraMax is Span America's ultra-high-performance non-powered foam hospital mattress. Span America is a Savaria company. Westin Healthcare quotes it, delivers it, and sets it on the bed for hospitals, long-term care homes, and families in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area whose therapist has asked for this surface.

This is a reactive foam mattress, not an air mattress and not a pump system. Span builds the seat section from UHP 500 foam so the surface keeps supporting the person when the head of the bed is raised again and again. A 36 inch UltraMax is rated at 500 lb. A 39 or 42 inch UltraMax is rated at 600 lb. Every dimensioned size is 6 inches tall. The default on this page is 80 x 36 x 6 inches (UMX8036-29).

Who this mattress is for

This mattress is for a person who needs a high-spec foam surface on a hospital or long-term care bed, and whose care plan names Geo-Mattress UltraMax or an ultra-high-performance non-powered foam mattress. Span writes it for moderate to high risk of skin breakdown, decreased mobility, and people who still reposition often, by themselves or with a caregiver. Span also writes it for prevention of Stage 1-4 pressure injuries, and for early intervention when there are several Stage 1-2 injuries or a single Stage 3 injury that can be positioned off the wound in at least two postures.

The 36 inch sizes sit on a standard 36 x 80 hospital deck such as the Drive Delta 1000. The 36, 39, and 42 inch sizes match the sleep widths on the Span America Encore. A 42 inch UltraMax is the size for a 42 inch deck such as the Drive 15300LW. Recessed deck frames use UMX85V-29.

This page is the bed-sized UltraMax. UltraMax for Stretchers is a separate surface, cut for stretcher frames, with its own codes and a different weight rating. If the care plan named Geo-Mattress 350, Plus, Pro, Max, HC, or Atlas, ask us to quote that Geo-Mattress tier. If the therapist named a PressureGuard air or convertible surface, we already sell PressureGuard Custom Care Convertible LAL, non-powered Custom Care, and Span-Care Convertible: ask us to quote the named model. For a simpler foam step, see the Gravity 9. For a non-powered air-and-foam surface that can take a pump later, see the Drive Balanced Aire NP.

  • Acute care, long-term care, or a private home when the therapist named Geo-Mattress UltraMax
  • A 36, 39, or 42 inch hospital deck that needs a 6 inch foam surface
  • A recessed deck frame that needs UMX85V-29

Construction and how it works

The seat section is UHP 500, a foam Span makes only for UltraMax. Repeated head-of-bed elevation puts the highest load on that zone. Span gives UHP 500 a 55 percent higher support factor than the foams it compares it with, so the seat is built to resist bottoming out and to recover after each raise.

The top is a Geo-Matt segmented layer with more than 800 individually articulating cells and Ring-of-Air channels. That geometry is there to cut shear, spread load, and let heat and moisture move out of the contact area. Under that top, 3-Dimensional Zoning sets different support in the head, torso, and heel so the person immerses where Span calibrated the core.

The heel end combines segmented breathable viscoelastic foam with Span's Gentle Heel Slope, which moves load toward the lower legs. The cover is LifeSpan bi-directional stretch fabric with Shear Transfer Zone bands on the underside. Those silicone-coated bands are there to stop heels, sacrum, and scapula digging in, and to help the person glide back after the head of the bed comes up. The edge is a firm perimeter for sitting and for getting in and out. Two reinforced handles sit on one side. The bottom is a split non-skid panel so the mattress makes less noise when the bed gatches.

There is no pump in the carton and no hose to join. The surface works as soon as it is on the deck.

Span America Geo-Mattress UltraMax specifications

These figures are for the bed-sized Geo-Mattress UltraMax. They are not the stretcher UltraMax figures. The specification tab holds the stored values.

  • Weight capacity: 500 lb (227 kg) on 36 inch widths; 600 lb (272 kg) on 39 and 42 inch widths
  • Height: 6 inches on every dimensioned SKU
  • Mattress weight: 24 lb (10.9 kg)
  • Construction: UHP 500 seat, 3-Dimensional Zoning core, Geo-Matt top with more than 800 cells
  • Cover: LifeSpan bi-directional stretch, fluid-resistant, anti-microbial, tear-resistant
  • Materials: 100 percent latex-free and PBDE-free
  • Flammability: NFPA 101, Cal. TB 117, ASTM E1590, and 16 CFR Parts 1632 and 1633
  • Warranty: 8 years on the mattress, 2 years on the cover

Wipe the cover with a damp cloth and a hospital-grade disinfectant. Let it air-dry for 20 to 30 minutes. Do not soak the mattress. Span does not recommend laundering the cover. The sewn-in handles are for moving the mattress, not for moving a person who is lying on it.

Mattress Size

Use Mattress Size to set the Span SKU. The default on this page is 80 x 36 x 6 in (UMX8036-29). The picker lists:

  • 75 x 36 x 6 in (UMX7536-29)
  • 80 x 36 x 6 in (UMX8036-29)
  • 84 x 36 x 6 in (UMX8436-29)
  • 80 x 39 x 6 in (UMX8039-29)
  • 80 x 42 x 6 in (UMX8042-29)
  • 84 x 39 x 6 in (UMX8439-29)
  • 84 x 42 x 6 in (UMX8442-29)
  • Recessed deck frames (UMX85V-29)

UMX85V-29 is the recessed deck build: V-shaped edges to sit in a recessed deck frame, a compressible section for more than one length and foot position, and an inner bolster that cradles the person back toward the centre of the bed. If the care team named a stretcher UltraMax rather than a bed UltraMax, ask us for that surface instead of picking a size here.

Funding help for a therapeutic mattress in Ontario

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) does not cover hospital beds or mattresses, so plan around other routes. Funding that may help instead: March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through before you buy.

Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA

Westin's own team delivers and sets up this mattress across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. We bring it in, place it on the bed, and check the fit before we leave.

We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a mattress first. For a scheduled in-home setup, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works. Same-day delivery is offered through our hospital bed rental service; purchased mattresses are delivered and set up on a scheduled date.

Hospital mattresses are oversized. The Canada-wide free ground-shipping offer on smaller goods does not apply. If the mattress is going outside the GTA, ask us for a freight quote. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery (bring-in, unwrap, test, take packaging away) is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.

Which beds this mattress fits

Span lists the bed-sized UltraMax in 36, 39, and 42 inch widths and in 75, 80, and 84 inch lengths, all 6 inches tall. Span also lists UMX85V-29 for recessed deck frames. We match the Mattress Size to the sleep deck you already have, or to the bed we are quoting with it.

A 36 x 80 UltraMax (UMX8036-29) is the usual size for a standard 36 x 80 homecare deck such as the Drive Delta 1000. The Span America Encore sleep surface is 36, 39, or 42 inches wide and 76, 80, or 84 inches long, so we match UltraMax width to that deck and use 80 or 84 inch length when the Encore is on those lengths. A 42 inch UltraMax is the size for a 42 inch deck such as the Drive 15300LW. Recessed deck frames take UMX85V-29. We confirm the deck width and length before we write the quote.

Related surfaces we already sell: the Gravity 9 if a quieter multi-layer foam is enough, the Drive Balanced Aire NP if the care plan wants a non-powered air-and-foam surface, and the Span America PressureGuard Custom Care Convertible LAL, non-powered Custom Care, and Span-Care Convertible if the therapist named a PressureGuard. See all medical mattresses if you are still choosing a surface.

Service and warranty

When something on the mattress needs work, you call the shop that delivered it, not a US parts desk. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department. Our technicians come to the home or workplace.

Span America manufacturer warranty

Span America's published warranty for the original purchaser is 8 years on the mattress and 2 years on the cover. We handle the warranty claim with you. Ask us if an extended warranty is offered for your order.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Geo-Mattress UltraMax a foam mattress or an air mattress?

Foam. The core is zoned foam with a UHP 500 seat and a Geo-Matt segmented top. There is no air cylinder and no pump. That is why Span files it as a non-powered pressure-redistribution support surface.

How is UltraMax different from UltraMax for Stretchers?

This page is the bed-sized UltraMax, built for hospital and long-term care decks in 36, 39, and 42 inch widths. UltraMax for Stretchers is a separate surface, cut for stretcher frames, with stretcher attachment strips and its own codes and weight rating. If the stretcher team named that surface, ask us to quote it instead of picking a bed size here.

How is UltraMax different from the other Geo-Mattress models?

UltraMax is the Geo-Mattress with the UHP 500 seat, the 500 and 600 lb ratings, and the 8-year mattress warranty, written for acute-care duty. Geo-Mattress 350, Plus, Pro, Max, HC, and Atlas are other tiers in the same family, each with its own rating and job. If the care plan named one of those tiers, we quote that model.

What size UltraMax fits a standard hospital bed?

Most homecare hospital beds we sell have a 36 x 80 sleep deck. That is UMX8036-29, the default on this page. A 39 inch deck takes an 80 or 84 x 39. A 42 inch deck takes an 80 or 84 x 42. An extended 84 inch deck takes a matching 84 inch UltraMax. Recessed deck frames take UMX85V-29.

What is the weight rating?

Span lists 500 lb (227 kg) on the 36 inch sizes and 600 lb (272 kg) on the 39 and 42 inch sizes. If the combined load is near those figures, ask us about a wider UltraMax or a bariatric surface rather than stretching this one.

How do I clean the UltraMax cover?

Wipe it with a damp cloth and a hospital-grade disinfectant. Let it air-dry for 20 to 30 minutes. Do not soak the mattress. Span does not recommend putting the cover through a washing machine. Phenolic or quaternary hospital disinfectants are the cleaners Span names.

Does UltraMax make pump noise?

No. There is no motor and no pump. The only sounds are the bed frame and the cover when the deck gatches. The split non-skid bottom is there to keep that gatching noise down.

What is the warranty on the Geo-Mattress UltraMax?

Span lists 8 years on the mattress and 2 years on the cover for the original purchaser. Westin Healthcare processes the warranty work on our service and repairs page.

Can funding help pay for this mattress in Ontario?

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program does not cover hospital beds or mattresses. March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada, and community programs may still help. Call (905) 451-7743 and we will point you to the right route before anyone starts paperwork.

Can I rent a surface like this before I buy?

Westin Healthcare rents hospital beds with a therapeutic medical mattress included. A Geo-Mattress UltraMax is not automatically that included surface. Call (905) 451-7743 and we will tell you what we can put in the home this week.

What is included with the Geo-Mattress UltraMax?

You get the Span America Geo-Mattress UltraMax in the Mattress Size you pick, with the LifeSpan cover and the two side handles. A bed frame, rails, and a pump are not included. There is no pump to add. Westin Healthcare delivers and sets it on the bed across Brampton and the GTA.
