Description

The Drive Sentra Extra Heavy Duty Wheelchair is Drive Medical's Sentra HD line, sold here as STD20DDA, STD22DDA, and STD24DDA. Westin Healthcare sells it and delivers it for homes in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. The default chair is STD20DDA-SF, the 20 inch seat with swing-away footrests.

Drive lists a 500 lb weight capacity on every width. Seat depth is 18 inches. Rear wheels are composite Mag-style so the person can self-propel. This is a folding manual wheelchair, not a transport chair.

Who this chair is for

This chair is for a person who needs a 20, 22, or 24 inch self-propel seat and a Drive 500 lb rating. Families usually call us when an 18 inch standard chair is too narrow, or when the person is above the rating on a lighter folding chair.

If the person needs 26 inches or a 700 lb rating, start with the Drive 26 inch Sentra EC. If a caregiver will push and the person does not need to self-propel, see the Drive 20 inch BTR20 or the Drive 22 inch BTR22.

  • Self-propel use on composite Mag-style rear wheels
  • A Drive 500 lb rating on a reinforced carbon-steel frame
  • 20, 22, or 24 inch seats with an 18 inch depth

Design and build

The frame is carbon steel with a silver vein finish. Drive reinforces the weight-bearing points with steel gussets, and it uses dual cross bars plus a reinforced side frame. Upholstery is heavy-gauge naugahyde with a carry pocket on the backrest.

Rear wheels are composite Mag-style. That is a self-propel layout, not the small rear wheels on a transport chair. Push-to-lock wheel locks hold the chair for sitting and standing. Arms are padded and detachable. Front rigging is swing-away footrests or elevating leg rests with tool-free length adjustment, set with the Drive SKU you pick.

The front fork and front frame have two positions. Drive lists seat-to-floor height as 19 to 21 inches. A lower hemi height uses Drive's optional caster STDS1074; ask us if that part should go on the chair. The frame folds. Drive lists 13 inches closed. Drive's owner manual says the chair is not a car seat.

Drive Sentra Extra Heavy Duty Wheelchair specifications

These figures are for the Extra HD line. The specification tab holds the stored values. Drive's current sheet lists a 500 lb capacity on every width, an 18 inch seat depth, an 18 inch back, a 42 inch length with riggings, a 37 inch height, and a 13 inch folded width.

Do not mix these numbers with the Sentra EC extra-wide chairs. Those are 26, 28, and 30 inch seats with a 20 inch depth and a 700 lb rating.

Per width, Drive lists:

  • 20 inch (STD20DDA): 29 inches open, 54 lb, 60 lb carton
  • 22 inch (STD22DDA): 31 inches open, 56 lb, 62 lb carton
  • 24 inch (STD24DDA): 32.5 inches open, 66.25 lb, 72 lb carton

Warranty for the original purchaser is Drive's Lifetime Limited term: defects in materials and workmanship for the life of that purchaser. It does not cover misuse, negligence, or normal wear, and it does not extend to rubber accessories, casters, and grips.

Width and front rigging

Use Choose Wheelchair Type to set seat width and front rigging. Drive's Extra HD SKUs are:

Choose Wheelchair Type

  • 20" wide with swing-away footrest (STD20DDA-SF)
  • 20" wide with elevating leg rest (STD20DDA-ELR)
  • 22" wide with swing-away footrest (STD22DDA-SF)
  • 22" wide with elevating leg rest (STD22DDA-ELR)
  • 24" wide with swing-away footrest (STD24DDA-SF)

The default chair is STD20DDA-SF. Desk-length padded arms come on every Extra HD SKU Drive lists today.

Funding help for a bariatric wheelchair in Ontario

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) can fund 75% of the cost of a manual wheelchair when the need is long-term and the chair is prescribed through an assessment by an ADP-registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist, and some income-support programs cover the full cost. Not every chair qualifies, so talk to us before you buy. March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs can also help. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through.

Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA

Westin's own team delivers this wheelchair across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. We bring it in, unfold it, set the footrests, and show you the wheel locks and the fold before we leave.

We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a chair first. For a scheduled delivery, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works. Same-day delivery is offered through our hospital bed rental service; purchased chairs are delivered on a scheduled date.

This chair folds. If it is going outside the GTA, ask us for a shipping quote. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery (bring-in, unwrap, test, take packaging away) is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.

Service and warranty

When something on the chair needs work, you call the shop that sold it, not a US parts desk. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department. Our technicians come to the home or workplace.

Drive manufacturer warranty

Drive's owner manual for the Sentra Extra Heavy Duty family prints a Lifetime Limited Warranty for the original purchaser: free of defects in materials and workmanship for the lifetime of that purchaser. The warranty does not cover misuse, negligence, or normal wear, and it does not extend to non-durable parts such as rubber accessories, casters, and grips. We handle the warranty claim with you. Ask us if an extended warranty is offered for your order.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between this wheelchair and a transport chair?

This Sentra Extra Heavy Duty has large Mag-style rear wheels so the person can push themselves. A transport chair has small rear wheels and is built for a caregiver to push. If you want a companion-push bariatric chair, look at the Drive BTR20 or BTR22.

Who pushes the Sentra Extra Heavy Duty?

The person in the chair can self-propel. A companion can also push from the rear handgrips. Wheel locks are push-to-lock. Drive's owner manual still asks for care on ramps and says the chair is not a car seat.

Will it fold into a car trunk?

Drive lists 13 inches closed and 42 inches long with the riggings. The frame folds. It is still a 54 to 66.25 lb steel chair, so plan for two people if the lift is awkward. It is not approved as a seat inside a moving vehicle.

How do I measure for a 20, 22, or 24 inch seat?

Measure the seated hip width and leave a little room on each side. Drive's Extra HD seats are 20, 22, or 24 inches wide and 18 inches deep. If 24 inches is still tight, the Sentra EC extra-wide line starts at 26 inches.

Will it fit through the doorway?

Measure the clear opening, not the door slab. Drive lists overall open width as 29 inches (20 inch seat), 31 inches (22 inch), and 32.5 inches (24 inch). If the opening is close to that number, see the chair in the store or ask us to measure with you.

What is the weight capacity?

Drive lists 500 lbs for every Extra HD width we sell: STD20DDA, STD22DDA, and STD24DDA. The 26, 28, and 30 inch Sentra EC chairs are a different line with a 700 lb rating.

Why Mag-style rear wheels instead of small transport wheels?

Mag-style rear wheels let the person self-propel. Small rear wheels belong on a transport chair that a caregiver pushes. Extra HD is the self-propel chair in this pair.

What is the warranty?

Drive's sheet and owner manual print a Lifetime Limited term for the original purchaser. Wear items such as casters and grips are outside that term. Westin Healthcare processes the claim.

Can funding help with this chair in Ontario?

Some Ontario routes can help with mobility equipment. Eligibility depends on the person's situation and assessment. Call (905) 451-7743 or use the funding page before you buy.

Can I rent a bariatric wheelchair before I buy?

Westin Healthcare rents some mobility equipment. Ask us whether a bariatric wheelchair can go out as a rental for your dates. Purchased chairs are delivered on a scheduled date.

Which front rigging should I pick?

Swing-away footrests (the -SF SKUs) swing out for a transfer. Elevating leg rests (the -ELR SKUs) raise the legs. Use Choose Wheelchair Type to set that with the seat width. Drive includes the chosen rigging on the Extra HD SKU.
